A New Species of Sucking Louse (Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Polyplacidae) From the Gray Mouse Lemur, Microcebus murinus (Primates: Cheirogaleidae), in Madagascar.

Lemurpediculus madagascariensis sp. nov. (Phthiraptera: Anoplura: Polyplacidae) is described from the Gray Mouse lemur, Microcebus murinus (J. F. Miller) (Primates: Cheirogaleidae), from Ankarafantsika National Park, Madagascar. Lemurs were trapped using Sherman Live Traps and visually inspected for lice, which were preserved in 90% ethanol. Adults of both sexes and the third-instar nymph of the new species are illustrated and distinguished from the four previously known species of Lemurpediculus: L. verruculosus (Ward); L. petterorum Paulian; L. claytoni Durden, Blanco, and Seabolt; and L. ro

Development of the Jaws and Teeth in Mouse Lemurs.

Rodent models have provided a detailed body of knowledge on craniodental development. Yet, it is unknown how well altricial mammals such as mice parallel primate and specifically human craniodental development. To address this, here we document the ontogeny of jaw-related structures in a cross-sectional prenatal sample of mouse lemurs (Microcebus spp.). Mouse lemurs follow the same developmental sequence as humans and mice with respect to the earliest appearance of jaw structures. Meckel's cartilage forms before any membranous bone of the mandibular body; mandibular basal bone begins to ossify

The sensory thalamus and visual midbrain in mouse lemurs.

Mouse lemurs are the smallest of extant primates and are thought to resemble early primates in many ways. We provide histological descriptions of the major sensory nuclei of the dorsal thalamus and the superior colliculus (SC) of mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus). The dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus has the six layers typical of strepsirrhine primates, with matching pairs of magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers, one of each pair for each eye. Unlike most primates, magnocellular and parvocellular layers exhibit only small differences in cell size. All layers express vesicula

Host-related and environmental factors influence long-term ectoparasite infestation dynamics of mouse lemurs in northwestern Madagascar.

Parasite infestations depend on multiple host-related and environmental factors. In the case of ectoparasites, which are exposed to the environment beyond the host, an impact of climate, expressed by seasonal or yearly variations, can be expected. However, long-term dynamics of ectoparasite infestations are rarely studied in nonhuman primates. We investigated the yearly variations in ectoparasite infestations of two small primates, the gray (Microcebus murinus) and the golden-brown (Microcebus ravelobensis) mouse lemur. For a more comprehensive evaluation, we also analyzed the potential effect

Scleral and corneal xanthomatous inflammation in a gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus).

Bilateral multifocal corneal opacity was detected in a 4.5-year-old male captive gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) without other clinical ocular changes. Histopathological examination revealed a severe diffuse granulomatous scleritis and focal keratitis with intralesional cholesterol, consistent with xanthomatous inflammation. This is the first report of xanthomatous inflammation in a gray mouse lemur. This condition may be the result of systemic factors (lipid metabolism disorders) and/or local predisposing factors such as hemorrhage or inflammation. The pathogenesis in this case could no

Distribution of lithostathine in the mouse lemur brain with aging and Alzheimer's-like pathology.

We analyzed the cellular distribution of the pancreatic inflammatory protein lithostathine and its receptor EXTL3 in the brain of the lemurian primate Microcebus murinus which develops amyloid deposits along with aging. In adult animals (2-4.5 years old), lithostathine and EXTL3 immunoreactivities were largely distributed in the whole brain, and more intensively in almost all cortical layers and hippocampal formation. Lithostathine was observed in the perikarya and neurites of cortical neurons but also in glial cells in the border of the ventricle and the corpus callosum. In healthy aged anima

"I am going to groom you": Multiple forms of play fighting in gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus).

Play fighting is a commonly reported form of play that involves competitive interactions that generally do not escalate to serious fighting. Although in many species what are competed over are the body targets that are bitten or struck in serious fighting, for many others, the competition can be over other forms of contact, such as sex, social grooming, and predation. In primates, the most detailed studies have been of species such as Old World monkeys, that engage in play fighting that simulates serious fighting, but reports of a number of others, especially among nocturnal prosimians, have n

Senile plaques and neurofibrillary changes in the brain of an aged lemurian primate, Microcebus murinus.

In some aged Microcebus brains (8- to 11-year-old animals) dramatic atrophy is found, particularly of the cortex, the hippocampus, the basal ganglia, the brainstem and the cerebellum, associated with a conspicuous increase in the size of the cerebral ventricles. These morphological changes are accompanied by certain histological profiles indicative of pathology. In the cortex, these histological changes consist of 1) a large number of senile plaques composed of degenerated neurites sometimes surrounding an amyloid plaque, 2) amyloid deposits in the vascular walls and 3) dense bundles of argyro

Spontaneous listeriosis in grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus), but not in Goodman's mouse lemurs (Microcebus lehilahytsara) of the same colony.

Listeriosis is a zoonotic infection with the gram positive, facultative intracellular bacterium Listeria (L.) monocytogenes. Infections mainly occur in ruminants, but also in other species, including humans. Case fatality rate usually is high. The incidence of listeriosis in captive non-human primates is very low. We report the first spontaneous, fatal, and likely food-born outbreak of listeriosis in a population of captive grey mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus). Conspicuously, none of the closely related Goodman's mouse lemurs (Microcebus lehilahytsara) in the same facility were affected.

Regional, seasonal and interspecific variation in 15N and 13C in sympatric mouse lemurs.

Madagascar provides some of the rare examples where two or more primate species of the same genus and with seemingly identical niche requirements occur in sympatry. If congeneric primate species co-occur in other parts of the world, they differ in size in a way that is consistent with Hutchinson's rule for coexisting species, or they occupy different ecological niches. In some areas of Madagascar, mouse lemurs do not follow these "rules" and thus seem to violate one of the principles of community ecology. In order to understand the mechanisms that allow coexistence of sympatric congeneric spec

Membranous Support for Eyes of Strepsirrhine Primates and Fruit Bats.

Living primates have relatively large eyes and support orbital tissues with a postorbital bar (POB) and/or septum. Some mammals with large eyes lack a POB, and presumably rely on soft tissues. Here, we examined the orbits of four species of strepsirrhine primates (Galagidae, Cheirogaleidae) and three species of fruit bats (Pteropodidae). Microdissection and light microscopy were employed to identify support structures of the orbit. In bats and primates, there are two layers of fascial sheets that border the eye laterally. The outer membrane is the most superficial layer of deep fascia, and has

Age-related molecular and functional remodeling of the choroid plexus in the gray mouse lemur.

Aging is accompanied by complex alterations in brain structure and functions, with growing evidence implicating the choroid plexus (CP) as a key regulator of cognitive and motor function. Here, we investigated age-related changes in the CP of the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a non-human primate model that recapitulates human brain aging features. Lemurs of different ages underwent behavioral testing, followed by transcriptomic profiling and immunofluorescence analyses of lateral ventricle CP tissue. Behavioral assessments revealed age-related declines in motor coordination and explor

The gut microbiome of Madagascar's lemurs from forest fragments in the central highlands.

The gut microbiome is now understood to play essential roles in host nutrition and health and has become a dominant research focus in primatology. Over the past decade, research has clarified the evolutionary traits that govern gut microbiome structure across species and the ecological traits that further influence consortia within them. Nevertheless, we stand to gain resolution by sampling hosts in understudied habitats. We focus on the lemurs of Madagascar's central highlands. Madagascar's highlands have a deep history as heterogeneous grassland-forest mosaics, but due to significant anthrop

Filarial infections in lemurs: Evidence for a wide geographical distribution and low host specificity among lemur species.

The relevance of emerging infectious diseases continues to grow worldwide as human activities increasingly extend into formerly remote natural areas. This is particularly noticeable on the island of Madagascar. As closest relatives to humans on the island, lemurs are of particular relevance as a potential origin of zoonotic pathogen spillover. Knowledge of pathogens circulating in lemur populations is, however, very poor. Particularly little is known about lemur hemoparasites. To infer host range, ecological and geographic spread of the recently described hemoparasitic nematode Lemurfilaria le

Neuroanatomical and neurochemical atlas of the spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) spinal cord.

Acomys cahirinus is an increasingly utilized model in various biological disciplines, particularly for studying the regeneration and developmental plasticity of the central nervous system due to its remarkable ability for neural tissue repair and early neurodevelopmental milestones. Despite its growing prominence in neuroscience, the lack of comprehensive neuroanatomical data hinders precise experimental design, especially in injury and regeneration studies. To address this gap, we present a neuroanatomical and neurochemical atlas of the Acomys cahirinus spinal cord, integrating anatomical, cy

Host Associations of Ectoparasites of the Gray Mouse Lemur, Microcebus murinus, in Northwestern Madagascar.

Eight species of ectoparasites were collected during 225 gray mouse lemur, Microcebus murinus (J. F. Miller), captures, in Ankarafantsika National Park, Madagascar, in 2010-2011. The ixodid tick, Haemaphysalis lemuris Hoogstraal, was the most common ectoparasite and was mostly represented by nymphs. Other ectoparasites recorded include the polyplacid sucking louse, Lemurpediculus madagascariensis Durden, Kessler, Radespiel, Zimmermann, Hasiniaina, and Zohdy; the ixodid tick, Haemaphysalis simplex Neumann; an undescribed laelapid mite in the genus Aetholaelaps; another laelapid belonging to the

Teeth, sex, and testosterone: aging in the world's smallest primate.

Mouse lemurs (Microcebus spp.) are an exciting new primate model for understanding human aging and disease. In captivity, Microcebus murinus develops human-like ailments of old age after five years (e.g., neurodegeneration analogous to Alzheimer's disease) but can live beyond 12 years. It is believed that wild Microcebus follow a similar pattern of senescence observed in captive animals, but that predation limits their lifespan to four years, thus preventing observance of these diseases in the wild. Testing whether this assumption is true is informative about both Microcebus natural history an

Biological variation in a large sample of mouse lemurs from Amboasary, Madagascar: implications for interpreting variation in primate biology and paleobiology.

A thorough knowledge of biological variation in extant primates is imperative for interpreting variation, and for delineating species in primate biology and paleobiology. This is especially the case given the recent, rapid taxonomic expansion in many primate groups, notably among small-bodied nocturnal forms. Here we present data on dental, cranial, and pelage variation in a single-locality museum sample of mouse lemurs from Amboasary, Madagascar. To interpret these data, we include comparative information from other museum samples, and from a newly collected mouse lemur skeletal sample from t

Magnetic resonance microscopy of iron in the basal forebrain cholinergic structures of the aged mouse lemur.

Increased non-heme iron levels in the brain of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients are higher than the levels observed in age matched normal subjects. Iron level in structures that are highly relevant for AD, such as the basal forebrain, can be detected post mortem with histochemistry. Because of the small size of these structures, in vivo MR detection is very difficult at conventional field magnets (1.5 and 4 T). In this study, we observed iron deposits with histochemistry and MR microscopy at 11.7 T in the brain of the mouse lemur, a strepsirhine primate which is the only known animal model of
