Chelidonium majus--an integrative review: traditional knowledge versus modern findings.

Chelidonium majus L. (family Papaveraceae), or greater celandine, is an important plant in western phytotherapy and in traditional Chinese medicine. Crude extracts of C. majus as well as purified compounds derived from it exhibit a broad spectrum of biological activities (antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antitumoral, analgesic, hepatoprotective) that support some of the traditional uses of C. majus. However, herbal medicine also claims that this plant has several important properties which have not yet been scientifically studied: C. majus is supposed to have diuretic, antitussive and eye-rege

Effectiveness of Volatile Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (VNADESs) for the Green Extraction of Chelidonium majus Isoquinoline Alkaloids.

The Chelidonium majus plant is rich in biologically active isoquinoline alkaloids. These alkaline polar compounds are isolated from raw materials with the use of acidified water or methanol; next, after alkalisation of the extract, they are extracted using chloroform or dichloromethane. This procedure requires the use of toxic solvents. The present study assessed the possibility of using volatile natural deep eutectic solvents (VNADESs) for the efficient and environmentally friendly extraction of Chelidonium alkaloids. The roots and herb of the plant were subjected three times to extraction wi

Combining metabolomic analysis and microarray gene expression analysis in the characterization of the medicinal plant Chelidonium majus L.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Even though herbal medicines have played an important role in disease management and health for many centuries, their present frequent use is challenged by the necessity to determine their complex composition and their multitarget mode of action. In the present study, modern methods were investigated towards their potential in the characterization of herbal substances. As a model the herbal substance Chelidonii herba was used, for which several reports on liver toxicities exist. Extracts of Chelidonii herba with different solvents were characterized phytochemically an

Apoptogenic activity of two benzophenanthridine alkaloids from Chelidonium majus L. does not correlate with their DNA damaging effects.

Apoptogenic and DNA damaging effects of chelidonine (CHE) and sanguinarine (SAN), two structurally related benzophenanthridine alkaloids isolated from Chelidonium majus L. (Papaveraceae), were compared. Both alkaloids induced apoptosis in human acute T-lymphoblastic leukaemia MT-4 cells. Apoptosis induction by CHE and SAN in these cells was accompanied by caspase-9 and -3 activation and an increase in the pro-apoptotic Bax protein. An elevation in the percentage of MT-4 cells possessing caspase-3 in active form after their treatment with CHE or SAN was in parallel to a corresponding increase i
