Chikungunya fever.

Chikungunya virus is widespread throughout the tropics, where it causes recurrent outbreaks of chikungunya fever. In recent years, outbreaks have afflicted populations in East and Central Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. The virus is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Chikungunya fever is characterized by severe arthralgia and myalgia that can persist for years and have considerable detrimental effects on health, quality of life and economic productivity. The effects of climate change as well as increased globalization of commerce and travel have led to grow

Cutaneous manifestations of chikungunya fever.

Chikungunya fever, a re-emerging RNA viral infection produces different cutaneous manifestations in children compared to adults. 52 children with chikungunya fever, confirmed by positive IgM antibody test were seen during 2009-2010. Pigmentary lesions were common (27/52) followed by vesiculobullous lesions (16/52) and maculopapular lesions (14/52). Vesiculobullous lesions were most common in infants, although rarely reported in adults. Psoriasis was exacerbated in 4 children resulting in more severe forms. In 2 children, guttate psoriasis was observed for the first time.

Development of Vaccines for Chikungunya Fever.

Chikungunya fever, an acute and often chronic arthralgic disease caused by the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus (CHIKV), has reemerged since 2004 to cause millions of cases. Because CHIKV exhibits limited antigenic diversity and is not known to be capable of reinfection, a vaccine could serve to both prevent disease and diminish human amplification during epidemic circulation. Here, we review the many promising vaccine platforms and candidates developed for CHIKV since the 1970s, including several in late preclinical or clinical development. We discuss the advantages and limitations of each, a

Chikungunya Fever in Southern Thailand, 2018.

Infection by the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes acute febrile illness and debilitating arthralgia. Outbreaks are sometimes not recognized because of its clinical resemblance to the more common dengue fever ubiquitous in tropical countries. An upsurge of dengue-like illness was reported in Satun province located in southern Thailand during the rainy season in 2018. We investigated probable outbreak of CHIKV disease. We collected serum samples from 127 patients and tested for CHIKV infection based on nucleic acid and serological tests. CHIKV RNA amplified by real-time reverse-tr

Development and Application of Treatment for Chikungunya Fever.

The development and application of treatment for Chikungunya fever (CHIKF) remains complicated as there is no current standard treatment and many barriers to research exist. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes serious global health implications due to its socioeconomic impact and high morbidity rates. In research, treatment through natural and pharmaceutical techniques is being evaluated for their efficacy and effectiveness. Natural treatment options, such as homeopathy and physiotherapy, give patients a variety of options for how to best manage acute and chronic symptoms. Some of the most used p

The Range of Neurological Complications in Chikungunya Fever.

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya fever is a globally spreading mosquito-borne disease that shows an unexpected neurovirulence. Even though the neurological complications have been a major cause of intensive care unit admission and death, to date, there is no systematic analysis of their spectrum available. OBJECTIVE: To review evidence of neurological manifestations in Chikungunya fever and map their epidemiology, clinical spectrum, pathomechanisms, diagnostics, therapies and outcomes. METHODS: Case report and systematic review of the literature followed established guidelines. All cases found were a

[Paediatric features of Dengue and Chikungunya fevers].

Dengue (Df) and Chikungunya fever (Cf) arbovirosis are booming in the world, because of the plasticity of their pathogens, mutant RNA viruses making the acquisition of sustainable herd immunity and vaccination difficult in humans, and the plasticity of their vectors, the female mosquitoes of the genus Aedes (Stegomya), capable of adapting to different environments. This review summarizes the viral life cycle and epidemiology of these arboviruses, pathogenesis and pediatric aspects of their clinical forms and the basic principles of their treatment and prevention.

Mucocutaneous manifestations of chikungunya fever: an update.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by female Aedes mosquitoes that has been increasingly reported in many parts of the world across the geographical borders. In addition to fever and joint pain, mucocutaneous manifestations of chikungunya have been reported in 40-75% of infected patients. Dermatological manifestations of chikungunya are often under-recognized and misdiagnosed as clinicians are not sensitized or educated regarding these. The early-onset cutaneous manifestations of chikungunya fever, occurring within 1 month of the fever, include maculopapular rashes, vesiculobullous eru

Secondary lymphedema of limbs and chikungunya fever.

Certain systemic viral infections can be related to development of vascular complications, such as deep venous thrombosis and lymphedema of lower and upper limbs. These links have been well-established in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C, or influenza. Recently introduced into the American continent (2013), chikungunya virus is an arbovirus transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus and is the etiologic agent of chikungunya fever (CF), but its relationship to these vascular complications has not yet been consolidated. However, the CF outbreak that occurred during

Chikungunya fever: General and oral healthcare implications.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was first isolated in humans in 1952, following an epidemic in Tanzania. The origin of the name means "to bend forward or become contorted," in reference to the posture adopted by patients due to the joint pain that occurs during the infection. Epidemiology data suggest that by the end of 2015, about 1.6 million people had been infected with CHIKV. The acute period of the disease is characterized by high fever, myalgia, joint pain, and severe and disabling polyarthritis, sometimes accompanied by headache, backache, and maculopapular rash, predominantly on the thorax.

Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy Associated With Chikungunya Fever.

A 47-year-old man with recent travel to the Caribbean was admitted with acute febrileillness associated with arthralgia and skin rash followed by sudden onset of bilateral visual field defects. Funduscopy revealed subtle bilateral paracentral dark lesions nasal to the fovea best seen on near infrared imaging as hyporeflective, wedge-shaped, paracentral macular lesions. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) through the lesions revealed hyperreflective bands at the level of the outer plexiform layer and outer nuclear layer (ONL), with concomitant attenuation of the underlying ext

Chikungunya fever presenting with acute optic neuropathy.

Chikungunya fever is a vector borne virus that typically causes a self-limiting systemic illness with fever, skin rash and joint aches 2 weeks after infection. We present the case of a 69-year-old woman presenting with an acute unilateral optic neuropathy as a delayed complication of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection contracted during a recent trip to the West Indies. She presented to our ophthalmology department with acute painless visual field loss in the right eye and a recent flu-like illness. She was found to have a right relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) with unilateral optic d

Fever, marked tachycardia and vesiculobullous rash in an infant with Chikungunya fever.

We describe a 3-month-old male infant who presented with acute onset fever, irritability and marked tachycardia. ECG was suggestive of atrial tachycardia. He developed erythematous blanchable skin rash on day 2 of illness, which progressed to vesiculobullous lesions over a few days' time. The child was managed with intravenous adenosine, carefully monitored fluid boluses, oxygen supplementation and close monitoring. Tachycardia improved within 24 hours. Blood for Chikungunya PCR was positive. The child was discharged after 5 days of hospitalisation with bullous lesions evolving into hyperpigme
