The handicapped child and child abuse.

For a group of children with handicaps, growth and development are also affected by abuse or neglect. Our understanding of the problems of the abused, handicapped child emerges from experience with 37 children with cerebral palsy who have been maltreated, coupled with a review of the literature in related areas. We identify the following four problems as crucial to the study of abuse and neglect to the child with handicaps: (1) abuse that causes handicaps, (2) abuse that occurs to the handicapped child, (3) compromises in care that can occur when the handicapped child becomes involved with the

Child Sexual Abuse Allegations in Child Custody, Child Visitation, and Child Protection Proceedings: A Scoping Review.

Allegations of child sexual abuse (CSA) in family law cases, such as child custody, child visitation, and child protection proceedings, present complex and sensitive challenges for legal and psychological decision-making. This scoping review synthesizes key findings from 47 empirical studies examining the prevalence, substantiation, and legal consequences of CSA allegations as well as typical case characteristics in this context. The empirical literature falls into three main clusters: Canadian studies using large national datasets from the late 1990s and 2000s; Australian court-based studies

Understanding Child-to-Child Harm: A National Analysis of Child Protection Responses.

Children may experience harm in diverse family contexts, including circumstances in which other young household members engage in harmful behaviors toward them. Despite child-initiated harm being prevalent and causing significant developmental impacts, these cases present unique challenges for recognition in current legal frameworks designed for adult perpetrators. This study examined patterns in substantiated reports involving children who harmed other children (CHOC) using National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System administrative data from 2018 to 2019. We documented state statutory and po

Child homicide--the extreme of child abuse.

OBJECTIVE: To review cases of fatal child abuse, looking for any characteristic features of these cases. DESIGN AND SETTING: A case review of all childhood deaths at The Children's Hospital, Camperdown, between January 1976 and December 1990. A child-to-child programme in rural Jamaica.

A child-to-child programme was carried out in six rural schools in Jamaica. School children in grades 4 and 5 were taught concepts of nutrition, environmental and personal hygiene, and child development. The children were encouraged to take messages home to their parents and improve the care of their younger siblings. Four hundred and twenty-three children and 90 mothers and guardians from four of the project schools were evaluated and compared with 199 children and 47 parents from two control schools. The project children showed higher scores on a test of knowledge in the topics at the end of

Child abuse: a study of the child's perspective.

This study ascertained the child's response to various types of abuse and neglect. With interviews and questionnaires for the staff of a child psychiatric unit, the mothers and the children involved, we assessed the severity, frequency and duration of physical abuse, verbal abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect or sexual abuse of children. The physically abused children accepted blame for mild but not severe mistreatment. Verbally and sexually abused children did not believe it was their fault if the mistreatment was moderately extensive but did if it was mild or severe. The relationship

Child Neglect and the Broader Context of Child Victimization.

Using a pooled data set of two waves of the National Surveys of Children's Exposure to Violence, this study investigates links between indicators of socioeconomic resources and lifetime exposure to two different forms of child neglect (physical and supervisory), examines how neglect is associated with the risk of other types of victimization, and estimates the impact of neglect on trauma symptoms. Findings suggest that physical neglect is directly linked to economic stressors, while low parental education is consequential for both physical and supervisory neglect. Both types of neglect also we

Mother-child disagreement in reports of child anxiety: effects of child age and maternal anxiety.

The present study examined effects of maternal anxiety, child age, and their interaction on mother-child anxiety reporting disagreement while taking into account the direction of each informant's report relative to the other. Participants were 41 dyads of mothers and clinically anxious children aged 7-13. A hierarchical regression revealed a significant interaction between maternal anxiety and child age (β = .30, p < .05). A graph of this interaction indicated that when maternal anxiety is high and the child is older, maternal report of anxiety is relatively higher, and when maternal anxiety i

Maternal depression, child frontal asymmetry, and child affective behavior as factors in child behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Despite findings that parent depression increases children's risk for internalizing and externalizing problems, little is known about other factors that combine with parent depression to contribute to behavior problems. METHODS: As part of a longitudinal, interdisciplinary study on childhood-onset depression (COD), we examined the association of mother history of COD, child frontal electroencephalogram asymmetry, and affective behavior with children's concurrent behavior problems. RESULTS: Children in the COD group had higher anxious/depressed and aggressive problems than did chi

Wheezing child.

This case discussion is part of the Integrating Basic Science into Clinical Teaching Initiative. It is intended to examine wheezing as a symptom and to describe the underlying physiology that explains the physical findings and blood gas features in an attempt to localize the site of obstruction. The information contained in this case is a compilation and derived from 2 similar patients. This case discussion describes a 13-month-old girl who presents with wheezing and respiratory distress. A close examination of her physical findings and blood gas analysis indicate that she is experiencing over

Child maltreatment.

Child maltreatment exemplifies a toxic relational environment that poses significant risks for maladaptation across biological and psychological domains of development. Research on child maltreatment can inform developmental theory, but more importantly, it can enhance the quality of clinical, legal, and policy-making decisions for maltreated children. This chapter addresses definitional, epidemiological, and etiological aspects of child maltreatment. A developmental psychopathology perspective is directed toward the discussion of the psychological and neurobiological sequelae of child maltrea

[Child abuse].

Child abuse occurs frequently and necessitates a multidisciplinary approach--medical, surgical, psychopathological, social and legal, as much for its prevention as for its diagnosis and treatment. It comprises all forms of psychological and physical violence as well as neglect, which lead to an impact on the general state of the child, gravely harming its physical and psychological development. The diagnosis of child abuse is difficult to make, as there exist no pathognomic criteria of maltreatment, and denial is usual in the perpetrators when they are identified.
