This paper is a critical reflection on the rescue and reintegration regime associated with the child trafficking intervention in Ghana. The paper acknowledges efforts by anti-trafficking NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) to address conditions of poverty, child/youth economic exploitation, and human rights abuses. However, it also observes that these interventions have had very little impact for some of the beneficiaries. Drawing on ethnographic research with young adults considered as trafficked victims by a child rights NGO in Ghana, the paper demonstrates how reintegrated young adults ar

In this systematic narrative review, we synthesised the small existing body of research on children who are gifted and dyslexic (G-D) in order to investigate the claim that G-D students have a unique profile, characterised by well-masked word-level reading and spelling difficulties. Our focus was on both the cognitive and academic profiles of this subgroup of twice-exceptional (2e) children and the assessment protocols used to identify them. Findings suggest that despite having processing deficits associated with dyslexia, G-D students' gifted strengths, especially those relating to oral langu

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationships among parental involvement, teacher-student relationships, child/adolescent social support, self-regulated learning, and behavioural outcomes (strengths and difficulties) among Malaysian gifted students. Specifically, the study investigated whether teacher-student relationships mediate the relationship between parental involvement and student outcomes and whether child/adolescent social support moderates the relationship between parental involvement and self-regulated learning and behavioural outcomes. METHODOLOGY: A total of 308 gifted students

The current paper aimed to estimate the network structure of general psychopathology (internalizing and externalizing symptoms/disorders) among 239 gifted children in Jordan. This cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling method was conducted between September 2023 and October 2024 among gifted children aged 7-12. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to assess six symptom clusters: conduct problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional defiant problems as externalizing symptoms, and affective problems, anxiety issues, and somatic complaints as i

Recognizing the intellectually gifted child allows one to anticipate the onset of behavioral disorders and to respond to them so as to improve quality of life for these children and their family. Certain signs can draw attention to this phenomenon. The decisive criterion has always been IQ. The notion of intelligence should be broadened and researchers have adventured beyond the purely intellectual competencies, which value most prominently the educational sphere. In addition, the modeling of high potential is currently renewing the approach to this question. This article takes this complexity

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing debate of how giftedness affects social-emotional adjustment. Self-esteem may be an indicator of social-emotional adjustment but insufficient in its explanatory capacity, especially high self-esteem which tends to produce opposite responses in regards to adjustment. A distinction between defensive and genuine high self-esteem could account for these results. In order to understand how self-esteem operates on social-emotional adjustment, it should be associated with other measurements relating to self-concern. In the Rorschach comprehensive system (CS), egocentri

How does unconditional income for families in poverty affect parental investments for their young children? Mothers in four US metropolitan areas were randomized to receive a monthly unconditional cash transfer of either $333 per month (high) or $20 per month (low) for the first several years after childbirth. During the first 3 years, high-cash gift households spent more money on child-specific goods and more time on child-specific early learning activities than the low-cash gift group. Few changes were evident in other core household expenditures. Compared with low-cash gift families, high-c

BACKGROUND: In recent years, particular interest has been directed toward the topic of intellectual giftedness. An IQ above 130, typically assessed with standardized cognitive scales, is a widely recognized criterion for giftedness. Gifted children often face emotional and socio-relational difficulties, particularly anxiety, due to perfectionism and high-performance pressures. Co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder complicate their adaptation in various life contexts. This is the case of twice

Poverty interferes with parents' breastfeeding, child-care, and employment options and ability to meet their parenting goals. This study-the first randomized controlled trial of early childhood poverty reduction in the United States-investigates how increased economic resources affect 1,000 low-income US mothers' breastfeeding, child-care, and employment practices and the ability to meet their intentions for these practices in the first year of their infant's life. The likelihood and length of breastfeeding, use of nonparental child care, and maternal employment did not statistically differ am

IMPORTANCE: Mothers and children in low-income households are more likely to experience worse mental and physical health than those from higher-income households.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of 4 years of monthly unconditional cash transfers on the mental health of mothers with low-income and the physical health of mothers and children.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a parallel-group, randomized clinical trial conducted from May 2018 to July 2023. Mother-infant dyads were recruited (May 2018-June 2019) from postpartum wards in 12 hospitals in 4 cities: Omaha, Nebraska; Mi

BACKGROUND: Policy debates over anti-poverty programs are often marked by pernicious stereotypes suggesting that direct cash transfers to people residing in poverty encourage health-risking behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and other substance use. Causal evidence on this issue is limited in the U.S. Given the prominent role of child allowances and other forms of cash assistance in the 2021 American Rescue Plan and proposed Build Back Better legislation, evidence on the extent to which a monthly unconditional cash gift changes substance use patterns among low-income mothers with infants war

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) experience more difficulties with oral motor skills, including chewing, drinking, and swallowing. The present study attempts to measure the preliminary effectiveness of Global Intensive Feeding Therapy (GIFT) in DS. GIFT is a new rehabilitation program addressing the specific difficulties and needs of each child, focusing on sensory and motor oral abilities. It follows an intensive schedule comprising 15 sessions over 5 consecutive days, with 3 sessions per day. The principles of GIFT are applied with specific objectives for DS.
METHODS: GIFT was p

Here we present epigenetic findings from a randomized controlled trial studying the impact of unconditional cash gifts of US$333 per month (children n = 313; mothers n = 329) or US$20 per month (children n = 423; mothers n = 448) to US mothers with low income during their child's first four years of life. Salivary DunedinPACE-pace of aging, a DNA-methylation predictor of healthy lifespan, and Epigenetic-g, a DNA-methylation biomarker of cognition, were preregistered as secondary outcomes (clinical trial identifier NCT03593356 ). As hypothesized, high-cash compared with low-cash gifts caused a

INTRODUCTION: Studies of the psychology of gifted children frequently refer to their relatively immature affective development in terms of their intellectual capacities and the relational difficulties they experience with regard to their peers, teachers, close acquaintances and sometimes their parents. From a psychopathological viewpoint, various types of problem have been observed such as depressive symptoms, motor instability coupled with hyperactivity, attentional deficits, impulsivity and a fall in self-esteem.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we wished to verify the links between self-esteem an

Early childhood poverty is associated with neurodevelopmental differences, but causal evidence linking income to brain development is sparse. In the present study, we examine whether four years of monthly unconditional cash transfers to mothers experiencing low income cause differences in their preschoolers' brain activity. Shortly after giving birth, mothers were randomized to receive $333/month or $20/month for the first several years of their child's life as a part of the Baby's First Years study. Here we report on the impact of these cash gifts on resting brain electric activity recorded a

Gifted students often encounter challenges in receiving the education that they need. To enhance adequate educational interventions for gifted students, it is important to explicitly consider the involvement of and interactions between key actors, such as parents, teachers, and policy makers. This systematic review study sought to explore the involvement of these key actors in educational interventions for gifted students, and to illuminate the current understanding of the mechanisms and conditions underlying the involvement and interactions. Results showed that studies investigating teachers,

As part of a larger study, eleven subjects--male, Caucasian, native-born, early 70s, lawyers, life-long (since 1922) participants in the Terman Study of the Gifted--were interviewed. From the edited tapes, seven qualified raters evaluated Various measures of life success and completed a 100-item Q-sort for all subjects. In general, the very highest successes were related to contentment, self-confidence, openness and spontaneity, a wide range of cultural interests, and relative freedom from pervasive feelings of hostility, irritability and dissatisfaction. The general results are corroborated b

Twice-exceptionality is characterized as the presence of high performance concomitantly with deficiencies or incompatible conditions. An example is when giftedness manifest associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. This study is a clinical case report referring to the evaluative and interventional process of a 9- year-old child with the paradoxical combination of giftedness associated with dyslexia. It aims to compare the performance in phonological processing, reading and writing before and after phonological remediation. In the first assessment, the child demonstrated alphabetic level in

This study examined the coping strategies of 40 mothers of children with special needs within Israeli Bedouin society, focusing on the prediction between mothers' narcissistic characteristics and their religious coping. The findings revealed two distinct maternal perspectives on a child's disability: (1) a pessimistic perspective (perceiving the disability as divine punishment), and (2) an optimistic perspective (perceiving the disability as divine gift/opportunity). The pessimistic reactions to the child's diagnosis included shock, fear and sorrow, while the optimistic view included feelings
