The diagnostic criteria for autism have been refined and made more objective since Kanner first described the syndrome, so there is now reasonable consistency in how this diagnosis is applied. However, many children do not meet these criteria, yet show some of the features of autism. Where language development is impaired, such children tend to be classed as cases of developmental dysphasia (or specific language impairment) whereas those who learn to talk at the normal age may be diagnosed as having Asperger's syndrome. It is argued that rather than thinking in terms of rigid diagnostic catego

We report in this paper pervasive developmental disorders. They represent a rather numerous group of severe psychic diseases of early childhood, of unknown etiology. All psychic functions are disturbed: thinking, emotions and mental functioning. Different classifications of these disorders include various terms for similar clinical conditions. So, there is a dilemma whether it is a case of special nosologic entities or different clinical conditions of the same disorder. Infantile autism, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome and atypical psychosis are described. Although prognosis is commonly unfav

The authors compared children with Asperger syndrome (AS) with high-functioning autistic children and psychiatric outpatient controls on measures of early history and outcome. In terms of their early history, the autistic probands showed more social impairment, a higher frequency of echolalia and pronoun reversal, and a more restricted range of activities than the AS group. Cluster analysis suggested refinements to the diagnostic criteria, which resulted in larger differences between the groups on these early history measures. In terms of their outcome, the autistic probands spent more time in

OBJECTIVE: Pervasive developmental disorders, exemplified by autism, constitute clinical entities which require the attention of child neurologists.
DEVELOPMENT: The increasing frequency with which these disorders are diagnosed supports the need to review and bring up to date the available data, so as to achieve good practice.
CONCLUSIONS: There are many studies and initiatives to orient the child neurologist as to the steps to be taken regarding aspects such as early identification, association with known syndromes, genetic counselling and medical advice in general, neuroimaging techniques,

Pervasive developmental disorders are severe disorders of development with no consistent neurobiologic etiology and most often an idiopathic etiology. We report a 12-year-old male who met criteria for a pervasive developmental disorder (Asperger's syndrome) and a chronic tic disorder. The child also has an X-linked cognitive impairment (MRX23). The presence of tic symptomatology, pervasive developmental disorder, and fragile X syndrome has previously been reported. Since no singular etiology for Asperger's syndrome has been found, the possibility of other cases of Asperger's syndrome occurring

Marcus is a handsome, sweet, 7½-year-old boy with a significant history of delayed development, specifically in speech and language skills, as well as difficulties with social interactions that have led other specialists to be concerned about a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder. He has been seen in our primary care practice since birth. He was born full-term after vaginal delivery weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. There were no pregnancy or delivery complications noted. Genetic testing revealed normal chromosomes, fragile X, and microarray testing. Marcus was a picky eater and good sleeper an

Pervasive developmental disorders (PDD-ICD10), covering roughly the same entity as the autism spectrum disorders (ASD DSM-IVTR and DSM-V) include a heterogeneous clinical reality. PDD develop in childhood and are characterized by alterations in socialization, communication and behavior disorders with stereotypies and repetitive movements. Autism is included in PDD and has led to many debates in France and to the publication of recommendations and government plans, in recent years. We propose in this article to review the current knowledge of this topic.

Autism is one of the five disorders that falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by "severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development." ASD is characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills, social interaction and restricted, repetitive stereotyped patterns of behavior. The five disorders under PDD are autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's disorder and PDD-not otherwise specified. ASD can often be re

After participating in this educational activity, the physician should be better able to1. Prescribe the appropriate psychotropic medication to treat symptoms of ASD.2. Identify the side effects of the psychotropic medications used to treat ASD.Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by core deficits in social communication and language, and restrictive and repetitive behaviors that cause significant functional impairment and distress for affected individuals and their caregivers. The increasing prevalence of ASD, most recently estimated as 1 in 88 children, presents an ever-increas

People appropriately adjust the distance between themselves and others during social interaction, and they may feel discomfort and move away when another person intrudes on their personal space. In the present study, we investigated personal space in children with persistent difficulties in the domain of social behavior, such as children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and in children with typical development (TD). The stop-distance paradigm was used to derive estimates of interpersonal distance, before and after a brief interaction with an unfamiliar adult confederate. The results showe

Problems in the diagnosis of autism and other pervasive developmental disorders are reviewed. Modification and application of recent developments in neuroimaging, molecular genetics and population studies are presented. A prioritized list of needed investigations is discussed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although there is no known efficacious pharmacotherapy for core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), psychotropic medications are commonly prescribed for behavioral/emotional symptoms associated with ASD. We reviewed current evidence-based pharmacotherapy options and updates from recent noteworthy studies.
RECENT FINDINGS: Atypical antipsychotics, particularly risperidone and aripiprazole, are effective in reducing irritability, stereotypy and hyperactivity. Metabolic adverse events, including weight gain and dyslipidemia, are common. Methylphenidate is effective in

The theory of mind (ToM) is a new concept which could be defined as the ability to make inferences on the intentions of others. This capacity has been used to explain childhood autism symptoms and recently an attempt has been made to refer it to schizophrenia. The authors aim to review the theory of mind concept, the different questions that could appear in neurocognitive sciences and the utilities that this hypothetical model has been given in the clinical practice. The authors also consider the contributions and restrictions that its use has in the field of pervasive developmental disorders

Abnormalities in melatonin physiology may be involved or closely linked to the pathophysiology and behavioral expression of autistic disorder, given its role in neurodevelopment and reports of sleep-wake rhythm disturbances, decreased nocturnal melatonin production, and beneficial therapeutic effects of melatonin in individuals with autism. In addition, melatonin, as a pineal gland hormone produced from serotonin, is of special interest in autistic disorder given reported alterations in central and peripheral serotonin neurobiology. More specifically, the role of melatonin in the ontogenetic e

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impaired social interactions, language deficits, as well as restrictive or repetitive behaviors. ASD is clinically heterogeneous with a complex etiopathogenesis which may be conceptualized as a dynamic interplay between heterogeneous environmental cues and predisposing genetic factors involving complex epigenetic mechanisms. Inherited and de novo copy number variants provide novel information regarding genes contributing to ASD. Epigenetic marks are stable, yet potentially reversible, chromatin modifications that

This article discusses the integration of various aspects of the child's development, particularly the development of language and communication and the way in which these developments interact to enable the child to construct a coherent sense of self. Multiplex developmental disorder is presented as an example of a disorder that affects several of these crucial strands of development. Recent research and controversies regarding the diagnostic descriptions of multiplex and other pervasive developmental disorders are presented. This discussion is used to illustrate the ways in which such disord
