Language comprehension in ape and child.

Previous investigations of the linguistic capacities of apes have focused on the ape's ability to produce words, and there has been little concern for comprehension. By contrast, it is increasingly recognized that comprehension precedes production in the language development of normal human children, and it may indeed guide production. It has been demonstrated that some species can process speech sounds categorically in a manner similar to that observed in humans. Consequently, it should be possible for such species to comprehend language if they have the cognitive capacity to understand word-

Evaluation of the child with delayed speech or language.

Because of the relative frequency of speech/language delay, all infants and preschool children should undergo routine language screening as part of health care maintenance. Diagnostic evaluation of the child with speech or language delay should answer the following questions: What is the child's descriptive diagnosis (eg, hearing impaired, mentally retarded, DLD, etc.)? What is the child's etiologic diagnosis (eg, congenital viral infection, single gene disorder, birth asphyxia, etc.)? What is the appropriate intervention strategy (amplification, orally based speech therapy, total communicatio

Preterm children's early language development: Language-specific and domain-general child-related precursors.

In the dynamic and complex process of language development, some populations, like preterm-born children, are at risk of developing language delays. This review addresses possible language-specific (i.e., prosody, word recognition, gesture) and domain-general (i.e., motor, visual perception and attention, joint attention, EFs) child-related precursors to language development of preterm children in the first three years of life. We examine how each factor can contribute to the development of language in this population. We end our review by providing suggestions for future theoretical framework

The psychometric status of child language assessment tools in South Africa's official languages.

Despite advancements in recognising the importance of early child language development and linguistic diversity in South Africa, culturally and linguistically appropriate assessment tools remain unevenly distributed across the official languages, posing considerable challenges for researchers and speech-language therapists. This study critically reviews the psychometric status of child language assessment tools in South Africa's official languages. The current state of tool development is analysed, evaluating language assessment tools available for clinical and research purposes in each langua

IsiZulu-speaking caregivers' perceptions of child language stimulation.

BACKGROUND: South African children from low-income households are at higher risk of cognitive-linguistic difficulties because of multiple risk factors. Early language stimulation minimises the effects of risk factors and prepares children for literacy and learning. Understanding caregivers' perceptions of language stimulation is important because perceptions shape practices, which determine child language outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the existing perceptions of language stimulation among 15 isiZulu-speaking caregivers from KwaDabeka township. METHOD: A qualitative, descriptive r

Family Media Exposure and Caregiver-Reported Child Language Profiles.

PURPOSE: This study described media exposure patterns of adults and children aged 0-5 years and examined associations among quantity, types, and context of media exposure and caregiver descriptions of child language. METHOD: Participants were 170 caregivers, primarily mothers with graduate degrees and high socioeconomic status, representing 244 children. Caregivers completed a 30-item survey addressing household characteristics, adult and child media exposure, media content and context, and children's language. RESULTS: Media exposure increased with age, from 0.33 hr/day for the youngest chi

Child Developmental Delays and Disorders: Speech and Language Delay.

Between 5% and 12% of children ages 2 to 5 years are diagnosed with a speech or language delay. Fifty percent of these children experience delays that persist into adolescence, and face educational and occupational challenges later in life. The causes of speech and language delay vary. Some children are born with physical or physiologic conditions that impede speech and language development, whereas others have cognitive or developmental conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder. Risk factors include male sex, prematurity, low birth weight, late birth order, larger family size, and maternal

The singing/acting child: a speech-language pathologist's perspective.

Performance-oriented children who encounter voice problems benefit from a team approach to intervention. Developmental and psychosocial issues in addition to the acquisition of information and vocal skills must be addressed. This article presents information from a speech-language pathologist's perspective and includes some examples of clinical approaches and strategies. The importance of building motivation to change vocal habits and the need for the child to develop insight and self-evaluation strategies is emphasized.

Language disorder in a child with early left thalamic lesion.

In this paper we present the case of a child with early left thalamic vascular damage who subsequently developed a language disorder. At 3 years and 8 months, her language was poor and unintelligible and showed phonetic, phonological and morpho-syntactic disorders. She did not exhibit any signs of mental retardation. After specific speech therapy, she improved in all linguistic skills. Given the lack of reports on thalamic lesions in children, this paper describes the effect of a thalamic injury in the earliest phases of language acquisition in a child who showed consistent phonological disord

[Short term memory and severe language disorders in the child].

Memory, and particularly short-term memory or "working memory" (Baddeley), is involved in language acquisition in children. We have studied short-term memory, with verbal-and non verbal tests, of 8 children suffering from developmental dysphasia compared with other ones, matched in terms of age and performance I.Q. (W.I.S.C.-R.). The digit span did not significantly differ in the two groups, while the visuo-spatial span was lower in the dysphasic group. The memorization of a list of monosyllabic words by dysphasic children was poor in the absence of visual presentation and improved by it. Diff

The value of speech-language assessment in the diagnosis of child abuse.

Language deficits and developmental delays may be helpful clues in the diagnosis of child abuse and neglect. Speech-language assessment of 27 children burned through abuse or neglect identified 22 (81%) with language delays. Other significant trends included a decreased attention span, inappropriate affect, irritability, and withdrawn behavior. We recommend speech-language assessment for all burned children suspected to be victims of abuse or neglect as part of the abuse team investigation and to identify children who may benefit from intervention.

"Language construction in an autistic child: thoughts regarding language acquisition and language therapy": translation, update, and commentary on a 1977 case report.

A 1977 Swiss case study is presented in English translation: a mute child with infantile autism is taught to speak starting at the relatively late age of 6. The author, who is the primary therapist and the child's father, details the conditioning procedure, discusses theoretical considerations in speech acquisition, and outlines the limits of the training. The author and translator update the child's status and add commentary.

Language competence in forensic interviews for suspected child sexual abuse.

Forensic interviews with children for suspected child sexual abuse require meeting children "where they are" in terms of their developmental level, readiness to disclose, culture, and language. The field lacks research indicating how to accommodate children's diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This article focuses on language competence, defined here as the ability of an organization and its personnel (in this case, Child Advocacy Centers and forensic interviewers) to communicate effectively with clients regardless of their preferred language(s). In this qualitative study, 39 U.S. ch

Language development of a multiply handicapped child after cochlear implantation.

The presence of additional handicaps in hearing-impaired children makes the prediction of language ability after cochlear implantation unreliable. Only limited follow-up data on developmental improvement after implantation among multiply handicapped children is available. The present study reports the course of development (audiological and linguistic) after cochlear implantation in one subject with moderate mental retardation. Preoperatively, his language development showed 34 months delay when compared to chronological age. The difference had shortened to 23 months by 2 years post-surgery. T

Relations Between Teacher Talk Characteristics and Child Language in Spoken-Language Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Classrooms.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine relations between teachers' conversational techniques and language gains made by their deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Specifically, we considered teachers' reformulations of child utterances, language elicitations, explicit vocabulary and syntax instruction, and wait time. METHOD: This was an observational, longitudinal study that examined the characteristics of teacher talk in 25 kindergarten through second-grade classrooms of 68 deaf and hard-of-hearing children who used spoken English. Standardized assessments provided measures of child voc
