Centipede envenomation (Chilopoda): Case report.

Centipedes are venomous arthropods that have an elongated body, divided into many segments, presenting a pair of legs in each segment, adapted pairs of paws that simulate fangs and inject venom causing intense pain, with local erythema and edema, and rarely, blisters and skin necrosis. We present the case of a young woman pricked on her upper lip with intense swelling and local pain and discuss the real danger of envenomation and the therapeutic measures that should be taken.

Morphology and diversity of the forcipules in Strigamia centipedes (Chilopoda, Geophilomorpha).

The morphology of the venomous limbs (forcipules) of 13 species of Strigamia and of six other geophilomorphs was studied with light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and, for a subsample, with confocal laser scanning microscopy. In all Strigamia species a well-distinct denticle is present invariantly on the inner side of the terminal article (tarsungulum), in sub-basal position, just proximal to a faint transverse sulcus and a cuticular introflexion that corresponds to the insertion point of a tendon. Strigamia species differ mainly in size and shape of the denticle and thickness of th

On the venom system of centipedes (Chilopoda), a neglected group of venomous animals.

Centipedes are among the oldest extant terrestrial arthropods and are an ecologically important group of soil and leaf litter predators. Despite their abundance and frequent, often painful, encounters with humans, little is known about the venom and venom apparatus of centipedes, although it is apparent that these are both quite different from other venomous lineages. The venom gland can be regarded as an invaginated cuticle and epidermis, consisting of numerous epithelial secretory units each with its own unique valve-like excretory system. The venom contains several different enzymes, but is

Ultrastructural investigation of the vesicular glands in Scutigera coleoptrata (Chilopoda, Notostigmophora).

In the notostigmophoran centipedes, two pairs of vesicular glands have evolved. These paired glands are situated in the first and second trunk segment and open via cuticular ducts in the upper part of the particular pleura. The vesicular glands of Scutigera coleoptrata were investigated using light and, for the first time, electron microscopical methods. The glands consist of wide sac-like cavities that often appear vesicular. The epithelia of both glands are identically structured and consist of numerous glandular units. Each of these units consists of four different cells: a single secretory

[Peculiarities of the locomotion of the Chilopoda Scolopendra cingulata upon changes in speed].

The spatial and temporal parameters of movements of scolopendra legs after instantaneous changes in speed from V1 to V2 double dagger V2 were investigated. It was shown that: (1) the synergy of the walking mode "footprint into footprint" is kept as the locomotion speed changes; (2) the continuity of metachronal waves is not disturbed as V changes; 3) the set of all scolopendra legs within some time after the change in V is subdivided into two groups: (a) a group of fore legs that create a "new" trackway of steps with pace l2 and (b) a group of hind legs that continue following the previous tra

[Biology and pathology of Scolopendra cingulata Latreille, 1829 (Chilopoda: Scolopendridae) stings].

Several species of scolopenders (Chilopoda: Scolopendridae), with their bites, are often cause of a local burning pain, redness, edema and sometimes leading to an erysipelas-like state. The present note deals with the main morphological characteristics useful for identificating of Scolopendra cingulata, the most common Italian species of Scolopendridae. Moreover, biology, ecology and medical aspects of the bite are discussed and two human cases due to S. cingulata bite occurred in Latium region (Italy) are described.

The peristomatic structures of Lithobiomorpha (Myriapoda, Chilopoda): comparative morphology and phylogenetic significance.

A comparative survey of the epipharynx and hypopharynx of lithobiomorph centipedes by light and scanning electron microscopy examines 18 species that sample the major groups of both families, the Lithobiidae and Henicopidae. Cladistic analysis of 11 characters of the peristomatic structures together with 29 additional morphological characters serves as a basis for interpreting the evolution of the lithobiomorph peristomatic structures. Scutigeromorpha is used for outgroup comparison in the framework of a homology scheme for the basic components of the epi- and hypopharynx. Compared to other ch

Clawing through evolution: toxin diversification and convergence in the ancient lineage Chilopoda (centipedes).

Despite the staggering diversity of venomous animals, there seems to be remarkable convergence in regard to the types of proteins used as toxin scaffolds. However, our understanding of this fascinating area of evolution has been hampered by the narrow taxonomical range studied, with entire groups of venomous animals remaining almost completely unstudied. One such group is centipedes, class Chilopoda, which emerged about 440 Ma and may represent the oldest terrestrial venomous lineage next to scorpions. Here, we provide the first comprehensive insight into the chilopod "venome" and its evolutio

Phylogeny of scolopendromorph centipedes (Chilopoda): morphological analysis featuring characters from the peristomatic area.

Alternative schemes for the higher-level systematics of the centipede order Scolopendromorpha have been established from characters of trunk segmentation, including the segmental position of spiracles, and the presence or absence of eyes. A comparative survey of the preoral chamber by light and scanning electron microscopy contributes 16 new characters of the epipharynx and hypopharynx, sampled from 26 species that represent 20 genera. These new data together with 49 additional morphological characters permit cladistic analysis of the major scolopendromorph groups. The shortest cladograms reso

Tropical dermatology: Venomous arthropods and human skin: Part II. Diplopoda, Chilopoda, and Arachnida.

Members of arthropod classes Chilopoda (centipedes), Diplopoda (millipedes), and Arachnida (spiders and scorpions) cause tissue injury via bites, stings, and/or a release of toxins. A few members of the Acari subclass of Arachnida (mites and ticks) can transmit a variety of infectious diseases, but this review will cover the noninfectious manifestations of these vectors. Dermatologists should be familiar with the injuries caused by these arthropods in order to initiate proper treatment and recommend effective preventative measures.

Epidemiological aspects of centipede (Scolopendromorphae: Chilopoda) bites registered in greater S. Paulo, SP, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of basic knowledge on venomous arthropods and the benignity of the clinical manifestations contribute to the centipede bite victims' not being taken to a treatment reference center, leading to underestimation of the number of cases and minimizing the possibility of a broader epidemiological view. An inventory of the centipede bite occurrences in Greater S. Paulo, Brazil, and the therapeutic methods employed, by the main Brazilian medical center for the notification of poisoning by venomous animals, is presented. METHOD: All patient cards of the period 1980-1989 have bee

Tentorial mobility in centipedes (Chilopoda) revisited: 3D reconstruction of the mandibulo-tentorial musculature of Geophilomorpha.

Mandibular mechanisms in Geophilomorpha are revised based on three-dimensional reconstructions of the mandibulo-tentorial complex and its muscular equipment in Dicellophiluscarniolensis (Placodesmata) and Hydroschendylasubmarina (Adesmata). Tentorial structure compares closely in the two species and homologies can be proposed for the 14/17 muscles that attach to the tentorium. Both species retain homologues of muscles that in other Pleurostigmophora are traditionally thought to cause swinging movements of the tentorium that complement the mobility of the mandibles. Although the original set of

The peristomatic structures as a source of systematic characters in the genus Lithobius Leach, 1814 (Myriapoda, Chilopoda).

Morphological characters have been widely used in centipede systematics. Here, we aim to obtain morphological information from the preoral chamber and peristomatic structures of lithobiomorph centipedes, with taxonomic sampling focused on the species-rich genus Lithobius Leach, 1814. Towards this goal, we (i) examined the epipharynx and hypopharynx of 32 species belonging to four subgenera of the genus Lithobius, viz. Lithobius Leach, 1814, Monotarsobius Verhoeff, 1905, Sigibius Chamberlin, 1913 and Ezembius Chamberlin, 1919 using light and scanning electron microscopy, (ii) searched for phylo

Craterostigmus tasmanianus Pocock, 1902, is a chilopod distinguished, among other features, by a unique structure known as the anal capsule. Morphological questions regarding the anal capsule pertain to the homology of its functional components when compared to other chilopods, as well as the morpho-functional mechanisms involved in its opening and closing. Additionally, there has been ongoing debate about the precise location of the anus on the anal capsule. Some studies have suggested that the anus is located at the posterior end of the capsule, while others have proposed a position in the m

Ultrastructural investigation of a salivary gland in a centipede: structure and origin of the maxilla I-gland of Scutigera coleoptrata (Chilopoda, Notostigmophora).

The maxilla I-gland of Scutigera coleoptrata was investigated using light and electron microscopy methods. This is the first ultrastructural investigation of a salivary gland in Chilopoda. The paired gland opens via the hypopharynx into the foregut and extends up to the third trunk segment. The gland is of irregular shape and consists of numerous acini consisting of several gland units. The secretion is released into an arborescent duct system. Each acinus consists of multiple of glandular units. The units are composed of three cell types: secretory cells, a single intermediary cell, and canal

A new genus of scutigerid centipede from southern South America with the description of two new species and an updated molecular phylogeny of the myriapod order Scutigeromorpha (Myriapoda: Chilopoda).

Scutigeromorph centipedes are conspicuous, yet often ignored myriapods for which little work has been conducted in southern South America. After examining recent and museum collections from Chile and Argentina, two new species of generic uncertainty were identified. A new genus of scutigerid centipede, Edgethreua , is therefore described with two new species, E. chilensis from Central Chile (type species of the genus) and E. goloboffi from Argentinian Patagonia. The new genus is characterised by the presence of scattered setiform bristles with short paired spines and the absence of simple spin

The tracheal system of scutigeromorph centipedes and the evolution of respiratory systems of myriapods.

The tracheal system of scutigeromorph centipedes (Chilopoda) is special, as it consists of dorsally arranged unpaired spiracles. In this study, we investigate the tracheal systems of five different scutigeromorph species. They are strikingly similar to each other but depict unique characters compared to the tracheal systems of pleurostigmophoran centipedes, which has engendered an ongoing debate over a single versus independent origin of tracheal systems in Chilopoda. Up to now, only the respiratory system of Scutigera coleoptrata was investigated intensively using LM-, TEM-, and SEM-technique

Extending Without Extensors: Morphofunctional Insights and Qualitative Experiments on Myriapod Legs.

Until recently, the absence of intrinsic extensor muscles in the distal leg joints of Myriapoda-a condition previously recognized in spiders-was known but scattered across various publications, lacking a consolidated overview. This has led to various hypotheses regarding the mechanisms underlying the extension of these so-called hinge joints. Hemolymph pressure has been proposed as a possible explanation, along with the pressing of the leg tip against the ground and the elasticity of the joints. The aim of this study is to investigate the morpho-functional background responsible for the extens
