[The morphology of the cardia and the pylorus in the Chiroptera].

Organ complexes of bats (Nyctalis noctula), consisting of oesophagus, stomach and initial part of the small intestine have been subjected to histological and morphometrical investigation. As demonstrates the histological investigation of the preparations, the denticulate line of the mucous membrane of the oesophageal-gastric passage is displaced towards the stomach. In the cardia a well manifested internal sphincter has been revealed. In the place, where the stomach passes into the small intestine, on a small area of the submucosal tela of the intestine, there is an accumulation of secretory p

Correlations between major brain regions in Chiroptera.

Unlike small homogeneous nuclei, progression indices of large heterogeneous brain regions show no negative correlations and give no evidence of compensatory effects, presumably because the evolutionary progressions and regressions of multiple neighboring functions mask each other. The diencephalon and various parts of the telencephalon show large positive correlations, apparently reflecting the general increase in size of the brain, relatively to body weight, from presumably primitive to advanced forms. The neocortex is strongly correlated with the striatum, a putative precursor, and with the

Reproduction of Phylloderma stenops in captivity (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae).

A reproductive colony of Phylloderma stenops was established in captivity. The bats were maintained in 1/2" wired screen cages sized 90 × 60 × 80 cm in a room with cycles of 13 hours of light and 11 hours of dark and with temperature and humidity ranging from 27 to 31 °C and 75 to 90% respectively. Bats were fed with a semi-liquid diet composed of chopped fruits, raw eggs, bovine meat, dog food, honey, dehydrated shrimp, salt and a vitamin and mineral complex offered daily. In the first two years of confinement the diet was complemented with laboratory-raised cockroaches, mealworms, young mice

Unique Turbinal Morphology in Horseshoe Bats (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae).

The mammalian nasal fossa contains a set of delicate and often structurally complex bones called turbinals. Turbinals and associated mucosae function in regulating respiratory heat and water loss, increasing surface area for olfactory tissue, and directing airflow within the nasal fossa. We used high-resolution micro-CT scanning to investigate a unique maxilloturbinal morphology in 37 species from the bat family Rhinolophidae, which we compared with those of families Hipposideridae, Megadermatidae, and Pteropodidae. Rhinolophids exhibit numerous structural modifications along the nasopharyngea

Leptospira in Brazilian Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera): A Systematic Review.

Bats are a megadiverse clade with plural ecological functions, including their role as bacterial, viral and eukaryotic zoonotic pathogen reservoirs. This includes Leptospira, a bacterial genus that causes severe aetiologies in humans and animals. However, knowledge on the Bat-Leptopsira relationships and diversity lacks systematization, and its coverage is uncertain. This study reviewed the publications related to Leptospira infection in bats in the Brazilian territory. Eight studies published between 1976 and 2024 were recovered, conducted in 5 of the 27 federative units of the country. The s

Maxilloturbinal Aids in Nasophonation in Horseshoe Bats (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae).

Horseshoe bats (Family Rhinolophidae) show an impressive array of morphological traits associated with use of high duty cycle echolocation calls that they emit via their nostrils (nasophonation). Delicate maxilloturbinal bones inside the nasal fossa of horseshoe bats have a unique elongated strand-like shape unknown in other mammals. Maxilloturbinal strands also vary considerably in length and cross-sectional shape. In other mammals, maxilloturbinals help direct respired air and prevent respiratory heat and water loss. We investigated whether strand-shaped maxilloturbinals in horseshoe bats pe

[Chiroptera and zoonosis: an emerging problem on all five continents].

Zoonosis is the cause of the vast majority of emerging diseases. Bats that occupy the second place in the mammal class play an important role. Whether they belong to the microchiroptera suborder or to the megachiroptera suborder, bats on all five continents have been implicated in transmission of numerous pathogens including not only viruses such as Lyssavirus (e.g. rabies), Hepanivirus (e.g. Hendra and Nipah virus) and recently coronavirus (e.g. SARS-like coronavirus and Ebola virus) but also fungus such as histoplasmosis. By modifying environmental conditions and encroaching on their biotope

Repetitive DNAs and Karyotype Evolution in Phyllostomid Bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae).

Bats are great models for studying repetitive DNAs due to their compact genomes and extensive chromosomal rearrangements. Here, we investigated the repetitive DNA content of two phyllostomid bat species, Artibeus lituratus (2nn = 30♀/31♂) and Carollia perspicillata (2n = 20♀/21♂), both harboring a multiple XY1Y2 sex chromosome system. Satellite DNA (satDNA) libraries were isolated and characterized, revealing four and ten satDNA families in A. lituratus and C. perspicillata, respectively. These sequences, along with selected microsatellites, were in situ mapped onto chromosomes in both species

Phylogeny of Molossidae Gervais (Mammalia: Chiroptera) inferred by morphological data.

Molossidae is a large (roughly 100 species) pantropically distributed clade of swift aerially insectivorous bats for which the phylogeny remains relatively unknown and little studied compared with other speciose groups of bats. We investigated phylogenetic relationships among 62 species, representing all extant molossid genera and most of the subgenera, using 102 morphological characters from the skull, dentition, postcrania, external morphology, tongue, and penis, based on direct observation and literature reports. Both parsimony and Bayesian analyses were used in phylogenetic reconstruction.

Ectoparasitic assemblages on mormoopid bats (Chiroptera: Mormoopidae) from Puerto Rico.

We performed the first quantitative survey of ectoparasitic assemblages on three species of mormoopid bats living on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico: Mormoops blainvillii Leach (n=40), Pteronotus quadridens Gundlach (n=40), and Pteronotus parnellii Gray (n=9). We examined bats for parasites primarily on 8-10 May and 24-27 July 2002 at Culebrones Cave, near Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Only 50% of M. blainvillii were infested with at least one parasite, compared with 85-100% for Pteronotus; infested individuals of both species of Pteronotus also harbored a greater number of parasites than did M. b

Novel viral encephalitides associated with bats (Chiroptera)--host management strategies.

Several novel viruses recently described in bats of the genus Pteropus (sub-order Megachiroptera) in Australia and southeast Asia cause encephalitic disease in animals and humans. These viruses include Hendra virus and Nipah virus (genus Henipavirus, family Paramyxoviridae) and Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV; genus Lyssavirus, family Rhabdoviridae). Broadly, strategies for disease prevention and control in the spillover host are directed at minimising direct or indirect contact with the natural host, improving farm-gate and on-farm biosecurity, and better disease recognition and diagnosis. Screening of yeasts in the oral microbiota of bats (Chiroptera) in Piauí, Brazil.

Bats in Brazil play a crucial ecological role; additionally, these mammals are known hosts of potential zoonotic pathogens and pathogenic fungi. The increase in their interactions with humans and other animals, caused by anthropogenic pressure, can lead to the dispersal of pathogens. Despite this, the fungal microbiome of these animals in Brazil has been little investigated. This project aims to analyze the fungal microbiota of bats and identify potentially pathogenic yeasts in populations of the Cerrado and Caatinga. The study included 47 bats captured in Piauí, Brazil. Samples were collected

Molecular Survey of Protist Enteroparasites in Bats (Order Chiroptera) from Portugal.

PURPOSE: Bats constitute 20% of all mammal species, playing a vital role in ecosystem health as pollinators, seed dispersers, and regulators of insect populations. However, these animals can also be reservoirs for infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria, and enteroparasites such as Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Balantioides coli, raising questions about their role in the epidemiology of these agents. Our study analyses bat faecal samples from Portugal with the aim of assessing the prevalence, distribution and diversity of enteroparasitic protozoa. METHODS: We conducted

The mitochondrial genome of Murina huttoni rubella (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from China.

Murina huttoni rubella is a common Murina species in China, with a medium forearm length and reddish brown hairs. In this study, based on a male M. h. rubella individual from Jiangxi, China, its complete mitochondrial genome was sequenced and analyzed. The genome is 16,707 bp in length, including 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes and a control region. The composition and arrangement of genes are similar to other bats. Phylogenetic trees that covered all released complete mitochondrial genome of bats were constructed using Bayesian Inference and maximum likelihood methods.

Histomorphology of the glans penis in Vespertilionidae and Phyllostomidae species (Chiroptera, Mammalia).

The penises of bats are taxonomically distinctive in size and shape. In addition, they are variable in microscopic anatomy, indicating that histomorphological studies of copulatory organs of bats may help understanding their successful reproductive strategies. We studied adult males of 13 species of vespertilionid and phyllostomid bats. Both families exhibited the basic structure of the vascular penis of mammals: the hydrostatic elements of the corpora cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum surrounding the urethra, as well as accessory cavernous tissue. Variation in the position and amount of the

Morphological specialization to nectarivory in Phyllostomus discolor (Wagner, 1843) (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae).

Dedicated nectarivory is a derived feeding habit that requires specialized cranial and soft-tissue morphologies to extract nectar from flowers. Nectarivory has evolved many times in terrestrial vertebrates, and in four bat families (Pteropodidae, Phyllostomidae, Vespertilionidae, and Mystacinidae). Within phyllostomids, specializations to nectarivory have been well documented in two subfamilies, Glossophaginae and Lonchophyllinae. However, nectarivory has also evolved independently in the genus Phyllostomus (subfamily Phyllostominae). Since Phyllostomus species have an omnivorous diet with a h

Lunar phobia in the greater fishing bat Noctilio leporinus (Chiroptera: Noctilionidae).

The nightly activity patterns of Noctilio leporinus, a piscivorous neotropical bat, were documented by visual observation over one lunar cycle at a large dock in Golfito, Costa Rica. The activity patterns were compared to the intensity of the moonlight, and a strong correlation between darkness and activity was observed (n = 776, r2 = 0.96). This correlation has been observed in many species of mammals and may indicate adaptation by potential prey species to avoid predation by visually oriented nighttime predators and/or an adaptation by predators to maximize hunting success.

First Record of Fossil Remains of Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus, Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) in the Urals.

The paper reports a find of a left lower molar (m1) of a pipistrelle bat (Pipistrellus sp.) from Holocene deposits of the Ust-Log-5 rock shelter, which is on the right bank of the Irgina River at the boundary between Perm Krai and Sverdlovsk Oblast. Radiocarbon dating assigns the deposits containing the pipistrelle tooth to the Middle-to-Late Holocene transition. The find of Pipistrellus sp. is of considerable interest for understanding the past distribution history of bats of the genus in the Urals.
