Peritoneal application of chitosan and UV-cross-linkable chitosan.

The suitability of chitosan and UV-cross-linkable chitosan for intraperitoneal use, for example as a barrier device for preventing peritoneal adhesions or for drug delivery, was examined. In vitro experiments using two major cell types present in the peritoneal cavity (mesothelial cells and peritoneal macrophages) revealed neither attractive interactions between cross-linked chitosan gels and the cells nor a proliferative effect. However, the same UV-cross-linked chitosan applied in the peritoneal cavity of rabbits caused a granulomatous reaction with adhesion formation within two weeks in all

Effect of molecular weight of chitosan on quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of quercetin is limited by its instability, low solubility and poor oral bioavailability. Encapsulation of quercetin using a nanoparticle delivery system is an effective way to overcome these drawbacks. RESULTS: The effect of the molecular weight (Mw) of chitosan (CS) (100, 200, 500 and 1000 kDa) on quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (QCNPs) was investigated. The structure, stability, release properties and antioxidant activities of the nanoparticles (QCNP-10, QCNP-20, QCNP-50 and QCNP-100) were assessed. Particle size of QCNPs decreased and polydispersity

Injectable thermosensitive hydrogel based on chitosan and quaternized chitosan and the biomedical properties.

A novel injectable thermosensitive hydrogel (CS-HTCC/alpha beta-GP) was successfully designed and prepared using chitosan (CS), quaternized chitosan (HTCC) and alpha,beta-glycerophosphate (alpha,beta-GP) without any additional chemical stimulus. The gelation point of CS-HTCC/alpha beta-GP can be set at a temperature close to normal body temperature or other temperature above 25 degrees C. The transition process can be controlled by adjusting the weight ratio of CS to HTCC, or different final concentration of alpha,beta-GP. The optimum formulation is (CS + HTCC) (2% w/v), CS/HTCC (5/1 w/w) and

Osteoregeneration of Critical-Size Defects Using Hydroxyapatite-Chitosan and Silver-Chitosan Nanocomposites.

Bone is a natural nanocomposite composed of proteins and minerals that can regenerate itself. However, there are conditions in which this process is impaired, such as extensive bone defects and infections of the bone or surrounding tissue. This study evaluates the osteoregenerative capacity of bone grafting materials in animals with induced bone defects. Colloidal chitosan dispersion nanocomposites, nanohydroxyapatite−chitosan (NHAP-Q) and nanosilver−chitosan (AgNP-Q), were synthesized and characterized. Non-critical-size defects in Wistar rats were used to evaluate the material’s biocompatibi

Effect of Chitosan Degradation Products, Glucosamine and Chitosan Oligosaccharide, on Osteoclastic Differentiation.

Chitosan, a natural cationic polysaccharide derived from crustaceans and shellfish shells, is known for its advantageous biological properties, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity. Chitosan and its composite materials are studied for their potential for bone tissue repair. However, the effects of chitosan degradation products, glucosamine (GlcN) and chitosan oligosaccharide (COS), on osteoclasts remain unclear. If these chitosan degradation products promote osteoclastic differentiation, careful consideration is required for the use of chitosan and related m

Hg(II) removal from water by chitosan and chitosan derivatives: a review.

Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic heavy metals commonly found in the global environment. Its toxicity is related to the capacity of its compounds to bioconcentrate in organisms and to biomagnify through food chain. A wide range of adsorbents has been used for removing Hg(II) from contaminated water. Chitosan is obtained by alkaline deacetylation of chitin. The adsorption capacity of chitosan depends on the origin of the polysaccharide, and on the experimental conditions in the preparation, that determine the degree of deacetylation. A great number of chitosan derivatives have been obtained

Chitosan as an adjuvant for poliovaccine.

The use of inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine is very important for eradicating poliomyelitis. However, this vaccine is not available readily in underdeveloped countries due to the high cost. Adjuvants can improve the immunogenicity of a vaccine and reduce the antigen dose required for vaccination, thus lowering the cost of the vaccine. Chitosan glutamate solution and a chitosan sulfate micro/nanoparticle suspension were tested as adjuvants for Imovax-inactivated poliovaccine and for inactivated monovalent poliovirus type 1, 2, and 3 vaccines obtained by inactivation of the attenuated Sabin pol

Chitosan for mucosal vaccination.

The striking advantage of mucosal vaccination is the production of local antibodies at the sites where pathogens enter the body. Because vaccines alone are not sufficiently taken up after mucosal administration, they need to be co-administered with penetration enhancers, adjuvants or encapsulated in particles. Chitosan easily forms microparticles and nanoparticles which encapsulate large amounts of antigens such as ovalbumin, diphtheria toxoid or tetanus toxoid. It has been shown that ovalbumin loaded chitosan microparticles are taken up by the Peyer's patches of the gut associated lymphoid ti
