PET microplastics: interactions with soil and chives.

This study investigates the impact of microplastics (PET) on soil properties and the development of chives under controlled laboratory conditions. Microplastics were added to the soil at concentrations below 0.05% w/w to examine their effects on soil chemistry, including pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and essential nutrients. The chives plants were measured (length), including both the aerial parts and the root system. The root region of the plants was examined with the aid of a binocular microscope. The results show that microplastics influenced some soil characteristics, such as a reduc

Renoprotective effect of Chinese chive polysaccharides in adenine-induced chronic renal failure.

In this work, we investigated the effect of Chinese chive polysaccharides (CCP) on renal function in mice with adenine-induced chronic renal failure (CRF). Results exhibited that adenine treatment caused serious renal pathological damages and elevation of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen of mice. However, these changes could be significantly reversed by the administration of CCP in a dose-dependent manner. When CCP dosage reached 200mg/kg/day, the area of renal pathological damage was decreased by 59.2%, and the levels of serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen were decreased by 23.9%

Stomata variation in the process of polyploidization in Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum).

BACKGROUND: Stomatal variation, including guard cell (GC) density, size and chloroplast number, is often used to differentiate polyploids from diploids. However, few works have focused on stomatal variation with respect to polyploidization, especially for consecutively different ploidy levels within a plant species. For example, Allium tuberosum, which is mainly a tetraploid (2n = 4x = 32), is also found at other ploidy levels which have not been widely studied yet. RESULTS: We recently found cultivars with different ploidy levels, including those that are diploid (2n = 2x = 16), triploid (2n

Transcriptomic Analysis of Fermented Chinese Chive Selectively Attenuating Deoxynivalenol-Induced Ovarian Toxicity in Mice.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a common mycotoxin linked to ovarian oxidative stress, toxicity, and reduced reproductive performance. Fermented Chinese chive is known for its antioxidant properties and potential reproductive benefits, but their individual and combined effects on ovarian function remain unclear in post-pubertal mice. In this study, a 21-day oral gavage model in female Kunming mice was used to evaluate the effects of DON (2 mg/kg/day), fermented Chinese chive extract (LEEK; 0.2 mL/day), and their combined exposure (LKDON) on ovarian physiology, oocyte quality, and ovarian transcriptomi

Hepatoprotective Activity of Yellow Chinese Chive against Acetaminophen-Induced Acute Liver Injury via Nrf2 Signaling Pathway.

Glutathione, the most abundant intracellular antioxidant, protects cells against reactive oxygen species induced oxidative stress and regulates intracellular redox status. We previously demonstrated that yellow Chinese chive (ki-nira) increased the intracellular glutathione levels. Acetaminophen (APAP) is a commonly used analgesic. However, an overdose of APAP causes severe hepatotoxicity via depletion of the hepatic glutathione. In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effects of yellow Chinese chive extract (YCE) against APAP-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. YCE (25 or 100 mg/kg) w

Comprehensive analysis of the effects of storage temperature and period on physicochemical, microbial, and volatile profiles of chives (Allium tuberosum).

This study aimed to characterize the physicochemical, microbial, and volatile profiles of chives during storage. Chives were cut and stored at temperatures of 1 °C, 4 °C, and 20 °C. Samples stored at 20 °C showed a rapid increase in weight loss, microbial growth, and antioxidant capacity, accompanied by a decrease in chlorophyll content and textural properties, indicating accelerated deterioration of chives. Low storage temperatures maintained the initial quality attributes up to day 12 at 1 °C and day 9 at 4 °C. Among volatile organic compounds, sulfur-containing compounds were identified as

Varied chromosome distribution behaviours during meiosis in triploid Chinese chives contribute to the formation of viable pollen.

Triploids play an important role in the polyploidization process and are considered a bridge between diploids and polyploids. To inform plant polyploidization research and polyploid breeding, it is important to explore chromosome behaviour during triploid pollen development, pollen fertility problems in triploids and the potential value of utilizing triploids. In this study, acetocarmine, carbol fuchsin and fluorescence staining methods were used to observe microsporogenesis and microspore development in fertile triploid Chinese chives. The results revealed that some of the pollen mother cells

Tracing Antibiotic Resistance Genes along the Irrigation Water Chain to Chive: Does Tap or Surface Water Make a Difference?

Irrigation water is well known as potential source of pathogens in fresh produce. However, its role in transferring antibiotic resistance determinants is less well investigated. Therefore, we analyzed the contribution of surface and tap water to the resistome of overhead-irrigated chive plants. Field-grown chive was irrigated with either surface water (R-system) or tap water (D-system), from planting to harvest. Water along the two irrigation chains as well as the respective plants were repeatedly sampled and screened for 264 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs

Macropinocytosis and Fast Endophilin-Mediated Endocytosis Mediate Absorption of Garlic Chive-Derived Vesicle-like Nanoparticles in Human Intestinal Epithelial Cells.

Dietary extracellular vesicles (EVs) or vesicle-like nanoparticles (VLNs) have been shown to exert beneficial functions in a wide range of diseases such as cancer, colitis, and metabolic diseases. They have also been used as natural carriers for medications. Despite the promising translational potential of dietary EVs or VLNs, the molecular mechanisms of their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the absorption mechanisms of garlic chive-derived VLNs (GC-VLNs) using C57BL/6J mice and a human intestinal epithelial cell line, Caco-2 cel

Unveiling responses and mechanisms of spice crop chive exposure to three typical pesticides using metabolomics combined with transcriptomics, physiology and biochemistry.

Pesticides are frequently used to control target pests in the production of spice crops such as chives (Allium ascalonicum). However, little information is available on the responses and underlying mechanisms of pesticide exposure in this crop. Our findings revealed that the uptake, transportation, and subcellular distribution of three typical pesticides-the fungicide pyraclostrobin (PAL), insecticide acetamiprid (ATP), and herbicide pendimethalin (PND) in chives, as well as their physiological, biochemical, metabolic, and transcriptomic responses-were dependent on pesticide properties, especi

Physiological and growth responses of Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) to elevated CO2 concentrations and infestation by fungus gnat (Bradysia impatiens).

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) levels can alter plant physiology by reducing stomatal density, weakening transpiration, enhancing photosynthesis, accelerating growth, increasing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and lowering nitrogen content. This study investigated the combined effects of eCO2 stress and Bradysia impatiens infestation on Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum) under controlled CO2 growth chamber conditions. A factorial experimental design was implemented, incorporating two CO2 concentration levels and three fungus gnat infestation intensities. The results revealed significant increases in leaf wid

Di-n-butyl phthalate degrading endophytic bacterium Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. strain JR20 isolated from garlic chive and its colonization in a leafy vegetable.

Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) is one of the primary PAEs (phthalate acid esters) pollutants. DBP can be absorbed by plants and threaten human health via the food chain. Some DBP-degrading bacteria have been successfully isolated from the environment (water, soil, etc.). However, only a few DBP-degrading plant endophytes have been isolated. In this study, an endophytic bacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. strain JR20, which was found capable of degrading DBP, was isolated from garlic chive. We found that strain JR20 metabolized 89.74% of DBP at a 5 mg/L concentration within 4 d in liquid m

Spray-Induced Gene Silencing (SIGS) of Dual-Target Genes (AaGH10 and AaSOD) Enhances Control of Alternaria alternata White Leaf Spot in Chinese Chive.

Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum) suffers severe yield and quality losses from white leaf spot disease caused by Alternaria alternata. Spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) presents a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical fungicides. To maximize the biocontrol efficacy of this approach, we designed dsRNAs targeting two candidate virulence-associated genes of Alternaria alternata: AaGH10, encoding a cell wall-degrading enzyme critical for host penetration, and AaSOD, an antioxidant enzyme crucial for reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. We comprehensively evaluated the antifungal ef

Development of Simultaneous Determination Method of Pesticide High Toxic Metabolite 3,4-Dichloroaniline and 3,5 Dichloroaniline in Chives Using HPLC-MS/MS.

3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) and 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA) are, respectively, the primary metabolites deriving from the breakdown of phenylurea herbicides and dicarboximide fungicides in both soils and plants, whose residues in vegetable products have a heightened concern considering their higher health risks to humans and greater toxicity than the parent compounds in the environment. In this study, a sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 3,4-DCA and 3,5-DCA residues in chive produc
