Clinical microbiology and infection : the official publication of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases2009eng
Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection is ubiquitous. It accounts for 10% of community-acquired pneumonias and 5% of cases of pharyngitis, bronchitis and sinusitis in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. It is also involved in exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and asthma. Moreover, C. pneumoniae has been reported as a possible cause of atherosclerosis and central nervous system disorders. The current reference standard for serological diagnosis of acute infection is microimmunofluorescence testing, although molecular detection techniques may well become reference diagnostic tests in

High affinity to the epithelial lining of the airways makes Chlamydophila pneumoniae a common etiological agent of respiratory tract infections (RTI). It causes among others: pharyngitis, tracheitis, sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis and bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. It is estimated that Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection is responsible for about 20% of lower respiratory tract infections. Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis and course of bronchial asthma. The recent results indicate that Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection may be a factor responsi

Chlamydophila pneumoniae was taxonomically separated from strain TWAR - an abbreviation of the strain isolated from humans TW-183 (material from the eye of a child in Taiwan in 1965) and AR-39 (material from a student's throat swab with acute changes within airways in Seattle in 1983). The basis of separation of the C. pneumoniae species was the unique structure of the elementary bodies. Infection caused by C. pneumoniae is often asymptomatic (60-80% of all infections). Symptomatic infections of the upper respiratory tract relate to pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis and the lower respiratory

We present the case history of a 48-year-old male patient with Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) pneumoniae who developed a nodular vasculitis. He developed a cutaneous vasculitis with the onset of respiratory symptoms. The diagnosis of Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection was based on serology. Since this infection is very common in our population, although often asymptomatic, it should be systematically considered as a causative agent of nodular vasculitis.

Chlamydophila pneumoniae, an aetiological agent of respiratory infection, is also thought to play an immuno-pathogenetic role in atherosclerosis by contributing to inflammation and plaque instability. Phospholipase D (PLD) is an enzyme involved in lipid metabolism and may have a direct or indirect impact on virulence and the inflammatory response. Some aspects of the developmental cycle of C. pneumoniae suggest a direct implication of its PLD (CpPLD) in the pathogenesis, specifically by affecting the regulation of lipid metabolism and lipid exchange between C. pneumoniae and host cells. Chlamydophila pneumoniae is a highly prevalent intracellular human pathogen with a unique biphasic life cycle. It is a common cause of upper respiratory infection and pneumonia, and is currently being studied as a potential risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The outer membrane surface antigens of C. pneumoniae are highly complex: some, such as the major outer membrane protein, are specific, but poorly immunodominant, whereas others have stronger immunogenicity, but are cross-reactive among Chlamydia species. Therefore, new, highly immunodominant, species

Bronchiolitis is an acute lower respiratory tract infection in early childhood caused mainly by different viruses. Etiology of bronchiolitis have been studied in different environments and populations. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), human Bocavirus (hBoV), human Rhinoviruses (hRV) have consistently been shown to predominate. Few studies however have attempted to determine whether other pathogens, particularly Mycoplasma Pneumoniae (MP) and Chlamydophila pneumoniae (CP), are associated with bronchiolitis in children under 2 years of age. The aim of this study w

We assessed the presence and characteristics of the intracellular pathogen Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) pneumoniae in brain-tissue samples from 25 patients with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 27 non-AD control individuals. 20/27 AD patients, but only 3/27 controls, were PCR-positive in multiple assays targetting the Cpn1046 and Cpn0695 genes. Culture of the organism from brain-tissue homogenate from one AD patient, and assessment of various chlamydial transcripts in RNA preparations from several patients, demonstrated that the organisms were viable and metabolically active in those sampl

OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence of chlamydial species including recently described chlamydial agents as well as the human pathogen Chlamydophila pneumoniae in feline conjunctivitis.
ANIMAL STUDIED: Twenty five cats without and 49 cats with conjunctivitis were tested for chlamydia using a Chlamydiaceae real time (RT) PCR (targeting the 23S rRNA gene sequence), a Chlamydiales PCR (targeting the 16S rRNA gene sequence), and cell culture. The PCR products of all positive samples were sequenced and subsequently analyzed using a basic local alignment search tool search.
RESULTS: Chlamydiaceae

Asthma exacerbation is associated with respiratory infections, including those by viruses and atypical bacteria. We herein report a case of severe acute asthma in an adult caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) infection. A 39-year-old woman without a history of asthma reported to the emergency department with progressive worsening of cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing with low oxygen saturation. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed patchy ground-glass opacity and bronchial wall thickening. She was treated with systemic corticosteroids, inhaled short-acting β2 agonists, a

An 18-year-old man was referred to the Internal Medicine ward because of a 2-week history of intermittent high fever, weight loss and cough. Clinical examination revealed hepato-splenomegaly and multiple lymph nodes swelling while laboratory tests showed elevated C-reactive protein, gamma glutamyl transferase and lactate dehydrogenase. All serologic testes for auto-immune antibodies, viruses and bacteria were negative except for Chlamydophila pneumoniae. An 18-FDG PET computed tomography scanner showed hypermetabolism in the liver, spleen and lymph nodes. We therefore conducted a liver biopsy

We report a case of Chlamydophila (C.) pneumoniae infection presenting with fever and rapid intrahepatic cholestasis. A 63-year-old man had a week-long history of intermittent high fever and rapidly progressive jaundice with atypical erythema. The results of liver function tests were recorded. The results of all serological tests were negative; the IgM, IgG, and IgA titers for C. pneumoniae had increased, which indicates a C. pneumoniae infection. The patient's fever and liver dysfunction improved upon administration of minocycline. Light microscopic findings showed the presence of enlarged li

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) has multiple causes and is associated with illness that requires admission to the hospital and mortality. The causes of atypical CAP include Legionella species, Chlamydophila, and Mycoplasma. Atypical CAP remains a diagnostic challenge and, therefore, likely is undertreated. This article reviews the advancements in the evaluation and treatment of patients and discusses current conflicts and controversies of atypical CAP.

The international journal of tuberculosis and lung disease : the official journal of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease2007eng
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by atypical pathogens in Thai children is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila pneumoniae infections in paediatric patients (aged 2-15 years) with CAP in three academic hospitals using standardised laboratory techniques. The characteristics of atypical pneumonia were also compared with other causes of CAP.
METHODS: Diagnosis of current infection was based on a four-fold or more rise in antibody serum samples or persistently high antibody titres together with the presenc

Chlamydophila pneumoniae is an intracellular pathogen responsible for a number of different acute and chronic infections. The recent deepening of knowledge on the biology and the use of increasingly more sensitive and specific molecular techniques has allowed demonstration of C. pneumoniae in a large number of persons suffering from different diseases including cardiovascular (atherosclerosis and stroke) and central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Despite this, many important issues remain unanswered with regard to the role that C. pneumoniae may play in initiating atheroma or in the progressi

We tested 731 sera from apparently healthy light horses against Chlamydophila pneumoniae, by a microimmuno-fluorescence (MIF) test. To verify cross-reactions with other species of chlamvdiae, all sera with an antibody titre > or = 32 to C. pneumoniae were tested against both C. psittaci and C. abortus. Antibodies to C. pneumoniae were detected in 194 out of 731 (26.5%) samples tested, with antibody titres ranging from 32 to 1024. No antibody titre > or = 32 was detected in sera to C. abortus. Only few sera with a high antibody titre to C. pneumoniae reacted weakly with C. psittaci at the dilut

Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) pneumoniae infection is increasingly reported worldwide nowadays. We studied twelve Thai adults presenting with the clinical symptoms and signs of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) due to C. pneumoniae (TWAR) at Pramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Their mean age was 38 (range 21-73) years. Six patients lived in Bangkok. Seven patients had comorbid diseases (four cases with allergic asthma, one each with diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary artery disease). C. pneumoniae pneumonia presented as subacute pneumonia in 6 patients

In the central area of Argentina, the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of Chlamydophila pneumoniae infections in reptiles are still unknown. A nested polymerase chain reaction of the rpoB gene was used to detect C. pneumoniae in cloacal swab samples from 19 reptiles at a recreational area. Eleven (57.89%) reptiles were positive; the sequencing and phylogenetic analysis confirmed the presence of this bacterium. Neither C. pneumoniae DNA in the caregivers pharynges nor IgM antibodies anti-C. pneumoniae in their serum samples were detected; however, caregivers presented very high tit
