While SbCl3 is typically inert toward oxidation by ortho-quinones, we use o-chloranil to show that the outcome of such reactions may be altered by the presence of a donor such as triphenylphosphine oxide, which readily traps the SbCl3(catCl) synthon (catCl = tetrachlorocatecholate) in the form of the corresponding adduct Ph3PO→SbCl3(catCl). The same reaction in the presence of a chloride salt affords the corresponding antimonate anion [Cl4Sb(catCl)]-. A rapid and sensitive spectrophotometrc method has been developed for the microdetermination of some phenothiazine derivatives as the pure substances and in different dosage forms. A novel method for the zirconoarylation of alkynes was developed. TCQ-promoted reductive elimination of arylzirconate [LiCp2ZrAr(RC≡CR)], which was prepared by the reaction of zirconocene-alkyne complexes with aryllithium compounds, afforded trisubstituted alkenylzirconocenes. This reaction can afford multi-substituted olefins with high stereoselectivity.

The impact of subtle modification of the environment on magnetic properties, by exchanging only solvent molecules, was investigated using a novel series of cobalt(II) compounds as a case study. Given potential ramifications in catalysis, exploring redox cycling at heavy main group centers is attracting renewed interest. In this context, this study explores how chalcogen bonding interactions can influence the oxidative addition of o-chloranil to the Te-(II) center of diaryltellurides. o-Chloranil has been shown to form 1:1 molecular complexes with pyridine and 2-, 3- and 4-picolines in CCl4 medium. Isosbestic points have been found but charge-transfer bands could not be detected. Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a widely used pesticide. However, whether PCP and its metabolite chloranil have endocrine-disrupting effects by inhibiting placental 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (3β-HSD1) remains unclear. Electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex formation between o-chloranil and a series of anilines has been studied in CCl4 medium. In all the cases, EDA complexes are formed instantaneously on mixing the donor and acceptor solutions.
