In Europe, cases of deliberate pesticide poisoning are rare and account for only a small percentage (around 4 %) of total suicides. This ratio differs greatly from that in developing countries. Agricultural populations and rural residents are more vulnerable. Symptoms vary depending on the type of pesticides and the route of administration, ranging from mild irritation to serious and potentially fatal neurological consequences. This article discusses the case of a 60-year-old man who administered Cycocel®, a growth regulator used in agriculture, intramuscularly. This poisoning induces a cholin

Active compounds used in agriculture are mainly in the form of acids. This applies primarily to substances that are inducers of systemic acquired resistance, which is one of the most promising methods of supporting plants in the fight against pathogens. The physicochemical properties and biological activity of such substances can be improved by derivatizing them to salt forms. We used the concept of ionic liquids to obtain novel compounds in the form of chlormequat ionic liquids. In this study we present synthesis and characterization of a series of novel ionic liquids composed of the chlormeq

Ferroptosis hallmarked by lipid peroxidation and iron homeostasis imbalance is involved in the occurrence and development of various diseases. The plant growth regulator chlormequat chloride (CCC) can contribute to the causality and exacerbation of reproductive disorders. However, the mechanism by which CCC may cause Leydig cell attenuation remains poorly understood. In this study, TM3 Leydig cells were used to investigate the inhibitory effect of CCC on cell growth and its possible mechanism. The results showed that CCC caused apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis and necroinflammation in TM3 ce

Chlormequat is a quaternary ammonium salt used as a plant growth-regulating agent. It is structurally similar to choline, acting at muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Herein, we present the case of suicidal poisoning with an unknown dose of chlormequat by a 45-year-old woman. Initially, carbofuran was suspected of ingestion. Following ingestion, circulatory arrest occurred. After hospital admission, gastric lavage was performed, and activated charcoal was administered. Initial toxicological analysis identified mild alcohol intoxication, while high-resolution mass spectrometry later discovered

Chlormequat chloride (CCC), a widely used plant growth regulator, is a choline analogue that has been shown to have endocrine-disrupting effects. Previous studies have shown that maternal exposure to CCC could induce hyperlipidemia and growth disruption in rat offspring. This study aims to further investigate the effects of peripubertal exposure to CCC on pubertal development and lipid homeostasis, as well as the underlying mechanisms. In vivo, male weanling rats were exposed to CCC (0, 20, 75 and 200 mg/kg bw/day) from post-natal day 21-60 via daily oral gavage. The results in rats showed tha

Chlormequat chloride can increase agricultural production by making the stem of the crops shorter and stronger, so it has become one of the most popular growth regulators in the world and humans are widely exposed to it. However, besides its regulatory effects on the growth of the plants, our previous studies have demonstrated that chlormequat chloride can also affect maternal and embryonic homeostasis in the rats. To better understand the regulatory effect of chlormequat during pregnancy, in this study, pregnant rats were orally exposed to chlormequat chloride at 0, 0.05, 0.5 and 5 mg/kg.bw f

A novel cucumber pulp certified reference material (CRM) was prepared for the analysis of plant growth regulator residues, specifically chlormequat chloride (CCC) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The matrix CRM candidates were prepared by cucumber pulping, spiking, homogenizing and subpackaging. A reference method of liquid chromatography tandem isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) was established for simultaneous measurement of mass fractions of CCC and 2,4-D in cucumber pulp. Interlaboratory value assignment of CCC and 2,4-D in the cucumber pulp CRM was performed using

Background: Chlormequat (chlorocholine) is one of the most widely used plant growth regulators. It enhances the strength of cereal crops such as wheat and barley. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved the use of chlormequat; however, in recent times, there has been growing concern about its health impacts, including endocrine and reproductive toxicity. Recent studies have highlighted the growing presence of chlormequat in food and biological samples, raising questions about long-term human exposure. Aim: This article highlights the critical need to review the safety issues associat

Chlormequat chloride (CCC), as a widely used plant growth regulator, can cause impaired sperm quality and decreased testosterone synthesis in pubertal rats, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the toxicokinetics and tissue distribution of CCC, as well as the possible mechanism of CCC-induced impairment in sperm quality. The concentration of CCC reached its peak 1 h after a single dose (200 mg/kg·bw) administration in mice plasma, and a bimodal phenomenon appeared in the testes, liver, and epididymis. In vivo, 200 mg/kg CCC caused testicular

In this study, a modified Quick Polar Pesticides (QuPPe) method, optimized by a central composite design, was developed to determine quaternary ammonium pesticides (QUATs) residues in barley and wheat by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) using a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) column. Considering the high polarity of these compounds, special conditions of sample preparation and analysis are required. Different mobile phases, extraction procedure and clean-up were evaluated. ¹H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy has been used to profile urinary metabolites in male Fischer F344 rats in order to assess the metabolic changes induced by oral exposure to two benzimidazole fungicides (carbendazim and thiabendazole) and two bipyridyllium herbicides (chlormequat and mepiquat). Exposure levels were selected to be lower than those expected to cause overt signs of toxicity. We then compared the sensitivity of the metabolomics approach to more traditional methods of toxicity assessment such as the measurement of growth and organ weights. Separate, acute exposure experime

BACKGROUND: Pesticides have often been linked to honey bee colony losses, which occur mainly over winter. In this study, we investigated residues in nine colonies at a model agricultural research site during the period before wintering. Moreover, we applied the acaricide tau-fluvalinate to the colonies via a strip formulation. The pesticide content was determined by UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS in bees from brood comb initially collected in mid-September immediately prior to the start of tau-fluvalinate treatment and 30 later at the time of tau-fluvalinate strip removal.
RESULTS: In addition to commonly a

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a highly valued medicinal and culinary crop. However, conventional propagation using rhizomes is limited. This study aimed to optimize immersion conditions for the large-scale micropropagation of Z. officinale utilizing a twin-bottle temporary immersion system (TIS), and to evaluate its efficiency in comparison to other culture systems across various concentrations of chlormequat chloride (CCC). The immersion conditions significantly affected shoot multiplication and overall growth parameters. The optimal protocol identified was 6 times/day for 5 min, whi

Several highly hydrophilic pesticides and metabolites are either permanently cationic or become cationic at low pH value. This makes them particularly suited for the analysis by ion chromatography (IC), especially since the suppressor technique enables a safe and reliable connection of IC with tandem mass spectrometry (IC-MS/MS). Here, we present a multi-method for the determination of 16 cationic pesticides using the 'quick polar pesticides' (QuPPe) extraction procedure and IC-MS/MS. The method covers permanently cationic compounds like chlormequat, mepiquat, diquat, and paraquat, as well as

Chlorocholine chloride (CCC) is a plant growth regulator used worldwide that is detectable in cereals, fruits and animal products. The health effects of CCC exposure have raised public concern. Our previous research showed that CCC exposure decreased testosterone synthesis in pubertal rats. However, little is known about whether and how pubertal CCC exposure impacts spermatogenesis. In this study, we used BALB/c mice and spermatogonia-derived GC-1 cells to examine CCC-induced spermatogenic dysfunction. In vivo, pubertal CCC exposure led to decreased testicular weight, decreased testicular germ

We investigated the effects of chlorocholine chloride (CCC), a plant growth regulator, and cyclophosphamide (CP), a known immunosuppressant, on the ability of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to resist challenge with a sublethal dose of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus ( VEEV ). The toxicants were continuously delivered in low doses in the feed; CP at 20 mg/kg body wt/day and CCC at 1, 10, 20 or 40 mg/kg body wt/day. Mice were inoculated with 3 X 10(4) plaque forming units (pfu) of VEEV after eating experimental feed for 23 days. Mice were bled daily for 7 days and at selected intervals

In humans, the ATP-binding cassette efflux transporter ABCG2 contributes to the fetoprotective barrier function of the placenta, potentially limiting the toxicity of transporter substrates to the fetus. During testing of chemicals including pesticides, developmental toxicity studies are performed in rabbit. Despite its toxicological relevance, ABCG2-mediated transport of pesticides in rabbit placenta has not been yet elucidated. We therefore generated polarized MDCK II cells expressing the ABCG2 transporter from rabbit placenta (rbABCG2) and evaluated interaction of the efflux transporter with

Chlorocholine chloride (CCC), a widely-used plant growth regulator, impairs testosterone biosynthesis, but the mechanism remains elusive. The Ethane dimethane sulfonate (EDS)-induced rat Leydig cell regeneration model was adopted to investigate the effect of CCC on Leydig cell development and testosterone levels. Rats received 75, 137.5, or 200 mg/kg bw CCC from post EDS d7 to d28 or d56. At d28, CCC exposure inhibited stem/progenitor Leydig cell differentiation. At d56, CCC exposure affected the maturation status of adult Leydig cells, reduced expression of StAR, HSD3B1, and serum and testicu
