While most productivity on the surface of the Earth today is fueled by oxygenic photosynthesis, for much of Earth history it is thought that anoxygenic photosynthesis-using compounds like ferrous iron or sulfide as electron donors-drove most global carbon fixation. Anoxygenic photosynthesis is still performed by diverse bacteria in niche environments today. Of these, the Chlorobi (formerly green sulfur bacteria) are often interpreted as being particularly ancient and are frequently proposed to have fueled the biosphere during late Archean and early Paleoproterozoic time before the rise of oxyg

To evaluate the effect of pyrolyzed crushed oyster shells (PCOS) on the remediation of sediments and microbial diversity, a field study was conducted in Buksin Bay, Tongyeong City, Republic of Korea. It was observed that after treatment with PCOS, the concentration of H2S in the sediment of the control site was 287 mg/L. Furthermore, it decreased up to 0 mg/L and remained so until the end of the field study, that is for a period of six months. Moreover, the concentrations of NO2-N + NO3-N, NH4-N, and PO4-P decreased sharply, and the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) increased after PCOS trea

Biogas desulfurization based on anoxygenic photosynthetic processes represents an alternative to physicochemical technologies, decreasing the risk of O2 and N2 contamination. This work aimed at assessing the potential of Allochromatium vinosum and Chlorobium limicola for biogas desulfurization under different light intensities (10 and 25 klx) and H2S concentrations (1 %, 1.5 % and 2 %) in batch photobioreactors. In addition, the influence of rising biogas flow rates (2.9, 5.8 and 11.5 L d-1 in stage I, II and III, respectively) on the desulfurization performance in a 2.3 L photobioreactor util

BACKGROUND: Lagoons are common along coastlines worldwide and are important for biogeochemical element cycling, coastal biodiversity, coastal erosion protection and blue carbon sequestration. These ecosystems are frequently disturbed by weather, tides, and human activities. Here, we investigated a shallow lagoon in New England. The brackish ecosystem releases hydrogen sulfide particularly upon physical disturbance, causing blooms of anoxygenic sulfur-oxidizing phototrophs. To study the habitat, microbial community structure, assembly and function we carried out in situ experiments investigatin

There are two main types of bacterial photosynthesis: oxygenic (cyanobacteria) and anoxygenic (sulfur and non-sulfur phototrophs). Molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis in the phototrophic microorganisms can differ and depend on their location and pigments in the cells. This paper describes bacteria capable of molecular oxidizing hydrogen sulfide, specifically the families Chromatiaceae and Chlorobiaceae, also known as purple and green sulfur bacteria in the process of anoxygenic photosynthesis. Further, it analyzes certain important physiological processes, especially those which are charact

The ability to generate polyphosphate (polyP) granules is important for survival for bacteria during resistance to diverse environmental stresses, however the genesis of polyP granules is poorly understood. Chlorobaculum tepidum (Cba tepidum) is a thermophilic green sulfur anoxygenic phototrophic bacterium which uses reduced sulfur compounds as electron donors. The presence of electron rich granules inside the Cba tepidum was reported, but no further information was provided. In this work we used cell thin sections at three different time points of cultivation to observe the biogenesis of the

Outer membrane-derived vesicles (OMVs) have been studied in different phyla of gram-negative bacteria, most extensively in the Pseudomonadota, where they have been shown to participate in diverse biological and environmental processes. To date, the production of OMVs has not been reported in the Chlorobiaceae within the phylum Chlorobiota. Chlorobaculum tepidum is the model organism for the Chlorobiaceae that synthesizes and consumes insoluble extracellular sulfur (S(0)) globules by an unknown mechanism. Here, we report evidence implicating outer membrane vesicles in biogenic S(0) globule synt

Aromatic carotenoid-derived hydrocarbon biomarkers are ubiquitous in ancient sediments and oils and are typically attributed to anoxygenic phototrophic green sulfur bacteria (GSB) and purple sulfur bacteria (PSB). These biomarkers serve as proxies for the environmental growth requirements of PSB and GSB, namely euxinic waters extending into the photic zone. Until now, prevailing models for environments supporting anoxygenic phototrophs include microbial mats, restricted basins and fjords with deep chemoclines, and meromictic lakes with shallow chemoclines. However, carotenoids have been report

A heterotrophic sulfur autotrophic integrated fluidized bed reactor was established for simultaneous and efficient removal of ClO4- and NO3- from water. The optimum operating conditions forecasted through the response surface method (RSM) were the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 0.50 h, the influent acetate (CH3COO-) concentration of 55 mg/L and the reflux ratio of 14, contributing to ClO4- and NO3- removal of 98.99% and 99.96%, respectively, without secondary pollution caused by residual carbon (NPOC <3.89 mg/L). Meanwhile, the effluent pH fluctuated in a range of 6.70-8.02 and sulfur-conta

Anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria are widely distributed in marine sediments and shallow waters of the coastal zone, where they often form intensely colored mass developments. The phototrophic bacteria have adapted to the whole spectrum of salt concentrations, from freshwater to saturated brines, and it is apparent that individual species have adapted well to particular habitats and mineral salts compositions, both qualitatively and quantitatively. This adaptation is reflected not only in the demand for defined ranges of salt concentrations, but also in the phylogenetic relationships of these b

Mangrove ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance with leaf litter serving as an important substrate for diverse microbial communities. This study investigates the microbial communities inhabiting leaf litter from four different mangrove species: Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia caseolaris, and Avicennia marina collected from Kebun Raya Mangrove, Surabaya, Indonesia. Using metagenomic sequencing, we revealed that Proteobacteria were predominant, followed by Chlorobi and Actinobacteria in the samples. Interestingly, we detected notable populations of

Chlorosomes in green photosynthetic bacteria are the largest and most efficient light-harvesting antenna systems of all phototrophs. The core part of chlorosomes consists of bacteriochlorophyll c, d, or e molecules. In their biosynthetic pathway, a BciC enzyme catalyzes the removal of the C132-methoxycarbonyl group of chlorophyllide a. In this study, the in vitro enzymatic reactions of chlorophyllide a analogues, C132-methylene- and ethylene-inserted zinc complexes, were examined using a BciC protein from Chlorobaculum tepidum. As the products, their hydrolyzed free carboxylic acids were obser

Modulation of the chlorophyll singlet state by protein environment is a key aspect of photosynthesis and light-harvesting in biological systems. This modulation affects excited-state dynamics, energy transfer efficiency, and photochemical reactivity. The PscB subunit of the reaction center (RC) of green sulfur bacterium Cba. tepidum contains an iron-sulfur cluster domain that is involved in light-driven electron transfer and a domain of intrinsically disordered region. The latter seemingly coil around one of the two trimeric FMO in the FMO-RC, acting as a molecular clamp. In this work, spectro

The thermophilic filamentous phototroph Chloroflexus aggregans was able to form a bacterial mat-like dense cell aggregate rapidly. The aggregate formation, which was observed in growing cells in a liquid medium in a bottle, occurred every time within 20-30 min after the cells were dispersed by shaking. The aggregation depended on the energy supplied by photosynthesis or respiration. Cells aggregated most rapidly under temperature and pH conditions that support maximum growth. The aggregation was also accelerated by the addition of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine that inhibits cyclic 3',5'-AMP phos

Salt metathesis of 1-methyl-2,4,6-triphenylphosphacyclohexadienyl lithium and chlorobis(pentafluorophenyl)borane affords a 1-phospha-7-bora-norbornadiene derivative 2. The C≡N triple bonds of nitriles insert into the P-B bond of 2 with concomitant C-B bond cleavage, whereas the C≡C bonds of phenylacetylenes react with 2 to form λ4 -phosphabarrelenes. Even though 2 must formally be regarded as a classical Lewis adduct, the C≡N and C≡C activation processes observed (and the mild conditions under which they occur) are reminiscent of the reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs. Indeed, NMR and comput

Meromictic lakes are stratified lakes that typically stimulate phototrophic anoxic microbial metabolism, including the transformation of sulphur. Less studied are the transformations of mercury in these environments, and the microorganisms, which mediate these reactions. In order to further an understanding of redox species, mercury and microbial populations in meromictic lakes, we examined the geochemistry and microbiology of Glacier Lake in Jamesville, NY. We found an anoxic transition at a depth of 6 m, followed by active nitrate and sulphate utilization. A chlorophyll a maximum was located

Soil antibiotic resistome and the nitrogen cycle are affected by florfenicol addition to manured soils but their interactions have not been fully described. In the present study, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and nitrogen cycle genes possessed by soil bacteria were characterized using real-time fluorescence quantification PCR (qPCR) and metagenomic sequencing in a short-term (30 d) soil model experiment. Florfenicol significantly changed in the abundance of genes conferring resistance to aminoglycosides, β-lactams, tetracyclines and macrolides. And the abundance of Sphingomonadaceae, the

Coral reefs are ecologically significant habitats. Coral-algal symbiosis confers ecological success on coral reefs and coral-microbial symbiosis is also vital to coral reefs. However, current understanding of coral-microbial symbiosis on a genomic scale is largely unknown. Here we report a potential microbial symbiont in corals revealed by metagenomics-based genomic study. Microbial cells in coral were enriched for metagenomic analysis and a high-quality draft genome of "Candidatus Prosthecochloris korallensis" was recovered by metagenome assembly and genome binning. Phylogenetic analysis show

Quantitative information on the ecophysiology of individual microorganisms is generally limited because it is difficult to assign specific metabolic activities to identified single cells. Here, we develop and apply a method, Halogen In Situ Hybridization-Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (HISH-SIMS), and show that it allows simultaneous phylogenetic identification and quantitation of metabolic activities of single microbial cells in the environment. Using HISH-SIMS, individual cells of the anaerobic, phototropic bacteria Chromatium okenii, Lamprocystis purpurea, and Chlorobium clathratiforme inh
