Synovial chondromatosis is a rare pathology that involves most frequently the weight-bearing joints. It is due to the development of cartilaginous bodies from the synovial membrane that could migrate threw the joint. Primary and secondary forms exist. Clinical examination will be marked by swellings and loss of mobility. Cross-sectional imaging has the preference. The treatment of choice is the removal of cartilaginous loose bodies with or without a synovectomy.

We reviewed 53 cases of synovial chondromatosis and compared their clinical, radiological and pathological features. A radiological diagnosis is possible with increasing frequency as the disease progresses; in the early phase arthrography is helpful. Radiologically the disease may be classified as either extra-articular, or intra-articular; the intra-articular variety may be localised or generalised. Recurrence after operation was seen in 11.5% and was much the same after either synovectomy or simple removal of loose bodies. A protocol for treatment is proposed.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign condition of unknown etiology in which the synovium undergoes metaplasia leading to cartilaginous nodules that ultimately break free, mineralize, and even ossify. The most commonly involved joint is the knee. Patients may be asymptomatic or may present with pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. Plain radiographs can be diagnostic and mineralized nodules are pathognomonic. Recommended treatment involves arthroscopic or open removal of loose bodies with or without a synovectomy to prevent further articular and periarticular destruction and to reli

A 34-year-old male patient presented severe pain in his left knee in association with functional incapacitation, with no apparent triggering factor. He sought medical attention in December 2006, at which time he was prescribed NSAIDs. After a year, he reported increased swelling and pain at the site. He was referred to a knee specialist with a suspected meniscal injury. Upon examination, severe swelling of the joint, with movement limitation, severe pain and negative joint aspiration, was found. Since the simple radiographic results were normal, an MRI of the knee was requested. The MRI reveal

Primary articular synovial chondromatosis is a benign, self-limiting neoplastic process in which hyaline cartilage nodules form in the synovial tissue. The disease most frequently affects the knee in men, followed by the elbow. The basic feature of this disease is a metaplastic maturation of the mesenchymal cells in the synovial membrane of a joint into cartilage. These cells mature into chondroblasts and form small nodules of cartilage in the synovial membrane. These nodules subsequently enlarge and detach to lie within the joint space. They become free within the joint as multiple small cart

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare monarticular condition in which cartilaginous masses are formed by metaplasia of the synovial membrane. These masses may calcify and ossify. The disease most commonly affects the knee, and the symptoms include pain, swelling, locking and palpable loose bodies. Although the clinical features are usually non-specific, the roentgenograms often provide important diagnostic information. Synovial chondromatosis is rarely a difficult diagnostic problem, but should not be confused with other disorders that give rise to loose bodies, such as degenerative joint disease

Two patients were evaluated for a complaint of long-standing hip pain. No etiology of their progressively disabling symptoms was found by routine diagnostic studies. Hip arthrography and arthrotomography in each case, however, demonstrated multiple intraarticular filling defects consistent with nonradiopaque loose bodies. These were subsequently confirmed at arthrotomy. Synovial chondromatosis is a rare disease in which intrasynovial cartilage metaplasia results in multiple intracapsular loose bodies. Its presence in plain radiographs is uncommon, but has been previously documented. This can a

A case of chondrosarcoma of the knee with clinical and histopathological features of malignant chondromatosis in a 40-year-old white man is reported. Malignant transformation of true chondromatosis is uncommon and has important implication of diagnosis and surgical treatment.

A 20-year-old, right hand-dominant man reported to physical therapy with a history of deep anterior left shoulder pain. Radiographs, which were obtained after physical therapy was initiated, and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging showed the presence of numerous radio-opaque loose bodies that followed bone signal characteristics dispersed throughout the glenohumeral joint, leading to a diagnosis of synovial chondromatosis. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2016;46(9):809. doi:10.2519/jospt.2016.0414.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare disorder presenting a typical radiological appearance. We reviewed three patients with this disease in the ankle. Two of these patients were reexamined after 7 and 27 years, respectively. Although both had several calcified juxta-articular bodies in the ankle none of them had any clinical symptoms. This indicates that surgical intervention should be performed only if mechanical signs and symptoms are present.

Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare, mostly benign proliferation of the synovium of the joint, tendon or bursa which results in the formation of loose bodies. It can appear in one of 33 described localisations, but it is most common in the knee. In our study we gathered a group of 7 patients (6 male and 1 female) with SC of the elbow, which underwent arthroscopic surgery of the elbow, performing both removal of the loose bodies and complete synovectomy. Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) was used to evaluate and compare the patients' condition before the operation and at the final follow-u

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign condition occurring due to metaplasia of synovium. A 65-year-old woman presented with pain in her right hip for 6 years. On examination, a swelling was palpable at the base of scarpa's triangle and her right hip movements were restricted. Imaging modalities showed ossified nodules in the antero-inferior aspect of the hip joint, joint effusion and arthritic changes. We diagnosed the patient to have synovial chondromatosis with secondary arthritis of the hip joint. We performed a total hip arthroplasty with simultaneous synovectomy and extraction of the

Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare benign cartilaginous neoplasm in which recurrent fibronectin 1 (FN1) and activin receptor 2A (ACVR2A) gene rearrangements have been recently reported. Triggered by a case of malignant transformation in SC (synovial chondrosarcoma) showing a novel KMT2A-BCOR gene fusion by targeted RNA sequencing, we sought to evaluate the molecular abnormalities in a cohort of 27 SC cases using a combined methodology of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and/or targeted RNA sequencing. Results showed that FN1 and /or ACVR2A gene rearrangements were noted in 18 case

BACKGROUND: Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a benign condition where the synovial lining of joints, bursae, or tendon sheaths undergoes metaplasia and ultimately forms cartilaginous loose bodies. Synovial chondromatosis of the foot and ankle is exceedingly rare, and outcomes following surgical excision are largely unknown.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective review of our institution's surgical database from 1970 to 2006 revealed 8 patients with SC of the foot and/or ankle confirmed by pathology.
RESULTS: Eight patients (4 female and 4 male) presented

Synovial Chondromatosis (SC) is a disease whose etiology is unknown, can be defined as a benign synovial process characterized by the formation of metaplastic cartilaginous nodes inside connective tissue of articular surfaces, is considered an active metaplastic phenomenon better than a neoplastic process; it presents a greater preference to affect women who constitute almost 70% of reported cases, the age range is wide and oscillates between 18-75 years (average 44.6 years). Between the main clinical findings are: pain, crackle, volume augmentation and a limited buccal opening. SC is an unusu
