Clear cell chondrosarcoma of the larynx.

Chondrosarcomas represent a group of malignant tumours composed of cells producing cartilage, and clear cell chondrosarcomas (CCC) represent a variant of these. A rare case of a laryngeal CCC is presented. The patient was a 70-year-old man who presented with a 6-week history of throat pain, worsening dysphonia and a lump in the neck. Examination revealed a level 3 neck mass and positron emission tomography imaging revealed a metabolically active right laryngeal mass. Biopsies revealed a cartilaginous neoplasm. The patient underwent total laryngectomy, and the pathology confirmed CCC of the lar

Nasal clear cell chondrosarcoma in a dog.

An intranasal tumour was diagnosed in a 5-year-old male neutered crossbreed dog following a 6-8 week history of intermittent epistaxis and nasal discharge. Computed tomography identified a mass in the right nasal cavity. Histologically, the mass was composed of sheets and indistinct clusters of predominantly clear or vacuolated round to polygonal cells; periodic acid-Schiff staining revealed glycogen granules within some tumour cells. Immunohistochemical labelling revealed that the tumour cells were immunopositive for vimentin and S100 and negative for pancytokeratin, Melan-A and PNL2, support

Clear cell chondrosarcoma in Von Hippel-Lindau disease.

A diagnosis of clear cell chondrosarcoma of the ulna was made in a patient with Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL). After surgery, genetic analysis of the tumor tissue showed loss of heterozygosity at the VHL gene locus. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed loss of expression of the VHL protein in the tumor cells. In addition, abundant Cyclin D1 expression in the tumor was observed. Chondrosarcoma has been described before in a VHL patient and VHL protein expression has been correlated to tumor grade in a series of sporadic chondrosarcomas. In this report, we show that clear cell chondrosarcoma

Clear cell chondrosarcoma in association with niemann-pick disease.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this case report is to bring to light this unusual combination of two rare diseases, namely Neimann-Pick disease Type B and clear cell chondrosarcoma occurring in the same patient. This has not previously been reported in the world literature. SUBJECT: Niemann-Pick disease (NPD) is a rare autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism. Type B NPD is even rarer. It is a lysosomal storage disorder affecting children and adolescents often causing death in early childhood, although in milder form patients may survive up to adulthood, like our patient. Clear cell chondrosar

Clear cell chondrosarcoma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst changes.

Clear cell chondrosarcoma is a rare cartilaginous tumour of low-grade malignancy. Although it has a characteristic histological appearance, its radiological features and clinical presentation often mimic a benign lesion. Herein, we describe the case of a patient with a clear cell chondrosarcoma of the right proximal femur that had an atypical appearance of chronic avascular necrosis on initial plain radiographs, which made preoperative diagnosis a challenge. In addition, the tumour also had extensive areas of aneurysmal bone cyst-like changes, which is not only a rare histologic phenomenon in

Clear cell chondrosarcoma of the proximal femur with intrapelvic extension.

Clear cell chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor that can be easily confused with benign tumors. The aim of this report is to present a case that is rare, initially diagnosed as aneurysmal bone cyst and then chondroblastoma, and has an interesting extension pattern. A 41-year-old male patient was treated for an apparently benign cystic lesion of the right proximal femur by intralesional excision and bone grafting. The pathological diagnosis was aneurysmal bone cyst. Two years later, the patient presented with a pathological fracture at the same site and a total hip arthroplasty was performed. The pat

Clear cell chondrosarcomas arising from rare sites.

Three cases are reported of clear cell chondrosarcoma arising from unusual sites: talus, rib and vertebra. Radiographically, two tumors showed osteolytic features and the vertebral tumor showed osteoplastic change. Histologically, all tumors consisted of clear cells that had a centrally placed nucleus surrounded by clear cytoplasm, osteoclast-like giant cells, areas of conventional chondrosarcoma, and various amounts of reactive bone. The tumor in the talus was initially diagnosed as benign chondroblastoma, but it recurred. The rib tumor showed marked cystic formation stimulating aneurysmal bo

Clear cell chondrosarcoma calcaneum - a case report and review of literature.

Chondrosarcoma is the second most common primary bone malignancy accounting for 20-25% of all bone sarcomas. However chondrosarcoma of the foot is rare with just a handful of cases being described. Among the subtypes clear cell variant is the rarest and has never been documented in the foot. We present a rare case of clear cell chondrosarcoma of the calcaneum with multiple metastases that was treated at our institute. The patient was a 62-year old male who presented to us with pain and mass in the left hindfoot with difficulty in walking for 2 years and a discharging ulcer over the lateral asp

[Clear cell chondrosarcoma of the larynx. A rare tumor in an uncommon location].

Clear cell chondrosarcoma is a rare bone tumor of low malignancy. It constitutes only 2% of all chondrosarcomas and shows a particular predilection for the epiphyses of long bones. So far, there have only been three cases of clear cell chondrosarcoma of the larynx published in the literature. We report the case of a 46 year old man who suffered from slowly worsening dyspnoea. Diagnostic evaluation revealed a directly subglottic stenosis of the larynx, narrowing the lumen to 1/3. When we tried to resect the stenosis via splitting the ring cartilage from outside, tumorous infiltration of the who

Clear Cell Chondrosarcoma With Chondroblastoma-Like Features: A Case for Team Diagnosis.

Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCCS) is a rare variant of conventional chondrosarcoma with low-grade malignant features that may be confused radiographically and histologically with chondroblastoma. We report a case of a 50-year-old female who presented with 6 months of left hip pain. Initial radiographs demonstrated an osteolytic lesion with adjacent area of sclerosis in the proximal left femur. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a marrow-infiltrative lesion with periosteal reaction and thickened enhancing periosteum. Biopsy of the sclerotic area demonstrated chondroblastoma-like findings, w

Chondroblastoma and clear cell chondrosarcoma: radiological and MRI characteristics with histopathological correlation.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the radiological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of chondroblastoma and clear cell chondrosarcoma with histopathological correlation. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Twelve patients with histologically proven chondroblastoma and of another four patients with clear cell chondrosarcoma were investigated by radiographs and MRI (T1-, T2-weighted sequences, intravenous gadolinium application). Additionally, the clinical and radiologic data of seven cases of clear cell chondrosarcoma without available MRI were considered. The localization, calcification of tu

Clear cell variant of chondrosarcoma of calcaneum: A case report with review of the literature.

Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCC) is an uncommon variant constituting less than 2% of all chondrosarcomas. CCC arises most commonly in the proximal end of the femur, followed by the humerus, and other small bones. CCC involving the tarsal bone is very rare, and to the best of our knowledge, only one case has been described involving the calcaneum in the English literature to date. In this article, we discuss a case of CCC involving the right calcaneum with complete clinico-immuno-histomorphological features, which is successfully managed by below-knee amputation. We also reviewed the reported ca

Clear cell chondrosarcoma arising from the sternum: a rare tumor in an uncommon location.

A 52-year-old woman presented with bulging of the anterior chest wall. The computed tomographic scan revealed an expansive localized mass based on the sternal manubrium. The patient was successfully treated with en bloc radical resection and reconstruction with clear resection margin. Histopathologic examination of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of clear cell chondrosarcoma. After the surgery, the patient has been free of disease for 43 months after surgery without other treatment. Our search and review of the literature did not reveal any published cases of clear cell chondrosa

What Factors Are Associated with Treatment Outcomes of Japanese Patients with Clear Cell Chondrosarcoma?

BACKGROUND: Clear cell chondrosarcoma is an extremely rare chondrosarcoma subtype; thus, its treatment outcomes and associated factors have not been widely studied. Knowing more about it is potentially important because clear cell chondrosarcomas are often misdiagnosed as other benign lesions and subsequently treated and followed inappropriately. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What are the patient- and tumor-related characteristics of clear cell chondrosarcoma? (2) What proportion of patients with clear cell chondrosarcoma initially had a misdiagnosis or a misleading initial biopsy result? (3) What

Clear cell chondrosarcoma: radiographic, computed tomographic, and magnetic resonance findings in 34 patients with pathologic correlation.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the radiographic features of clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCCS), including the computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) findings, and to correlate them with the histopathologic findings. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: A retrospective review was carried out of 72 patients with histopathologically confirmed CCCS. Imaging studies were available for 34 patients: conventional radiographs (n=28), CT scans (n=14), and MR images (n=15). Radiographic studies were reviewed by three radiologists who rendered a consensus opinion; the studies were correlated with the histopathologi

Clear Cell Chondrosarcoma With Somatic VHL Inactivation: A Case Report With Integrated Genomic and Transcriptomic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCC) is a rare, low-grade malignant bone tumor and a specific subtype of chondrosarcoma. In contrast to conventional central chondrosarcoma, which often exhibits recurrent IDH1/2 mutations, CCC is IDH-wildtype, and its genomic profile remains uncharacterized. Sporadic cases have been described in association with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, but somatic VHL alterations have not been demonstrated in this tumor. METHODS: A 35-year-old man presented with local recurrence of a distal femoral tumor 5 years after curettage and allograft reconstruction for

S-100 protein immunostaining in the differential diagnosis of chondroblastoma.

In an effort to investigate the utility of immunostaining for S-100 protein in the differential diagnosis of chondroblastoma, the expression of S-100 protein in nine chondroblastomas was compared with that in six giant cell tumors, six aneurysmal bone cysts, four giant cell reparative granulomas, six cases of fibrous dysplasia, two cases of osteitis fibrosa cystica, two nonossifying fibromas, and one clear cell chondrosarcoma. Five enchondromas, three typical chondrosarcomas, and one mesenchymal chondrosarcoma were also included as control tumors. The proliferating stromal cells in seven of th

Functional optimisation in chondrosarcoma of the subglottis: a novel surgical approach.

Chondrosarcoma of the larynx is rare accounting for approximately 1% of laryngeal cancers; clear cell subtype is a rare variant. Given the low risk of occult nodal disease, they present a unique opportunity to maximise tissue preservation in order to optimise both recovery and long-term functional outcomes. We present a case of laryngeal clear cell chondrosarcoma causing critical airway obstruction. An emergency tracheostomy was performed and mapping biopsies were taken. The tumour originated from the cricoid and extended into both arytenoid superstructures precluding cricotracheal resection.

Bone tumors of the coracoid process of the scapula.

Bone tumors of the coracoid process of the scapula are rare, and diagnosis and treatment often are delayed. The records of 18 patients with bone tumors of the coracoid process were reviewed. Histologic types included eight cases of ordinary chondrosarcoma, three cases of dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma, two cases of osteoid osteoma, and one case each of osteosarcoma, plasmacytoma, lymphoma, giant cell tumor, and aneurysmal bone cyst. All 18 patients had shoulder pain, and eight of them had been treated with steroid injections for nonneoplastic conditions. Radiologically, chondrosarcoma did not

Clear cell tumors of bone.

Except for clear cell carcinomas that metastasize to bone, with renal cell carcinoma being the principal representative of that group, clear cell osseous neoplasms are rare. The only distinct nosologic entity in this category that is primary in the bone is the clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCCS). This lesion, which is most often seen in the proximal femur or humerus, affects males more often than females and has a peak incidence during the third and fourth decades of life. Radiologic images of CCCS show a well-circumscribed, often calcified lytic lesion that may expand the bone, but only uncommon
