Acute mercury exposure affects the redox status system, fatty acid profile and the ovarian morphology of the solitary ascidian Ciona intestinalis (Chordata, Tunicata).

Mercury is one of the most harmful pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. The present study assessed the effects of gradual concentrations of mercury (1, 10, 50, and 100 μg L-1) on the antioxidant status and fatty acid profiles in the viscera of the solitary ascidian Ciona intestinalis (Linnaeus, 1767). Additionally, histological analyses were conducted on the ovary to evaluate morphological changes induced by mercury exposure. The results revealed an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PCO), glutathione (GSH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels. Additionally, metallothionei

The evolutionary origin and mechanism of chordate tail regeneration. An ancient tale?

Chordate tail regeneration represents the remarkable ability of some chordates to partially or completely regenerate a significant portion of their primary body axis. In this review we will discuss the chordate regenerative ability, what is known about the cellular sources which contribute to the regenerating tail, how various structures such as the spinal cord and vertebral column are re-established, and how scaling of the regenerating tail is regulated. Finally, we propose that tail regeneration is evolutionarily conserved and is fundamentally different from tail development however the orig

Convergence in dental histology between the late Triassic semionotiform Sargodon tomicus (Neopterygii) and a late cretaceous (Turonian) pycnodontid (Neopterygii: Pycnodontiformes) species.

Microstructural scanning electron microscope investigation was performed on sectioned and surface-etched isolated, prehensile teeth of the Late Triassic semionotiform species Sargodon tomicus and Pycnodontidae incertae sedis from the Late Cretaceous. The teeth of both taxa display a system of vascular canals penetrating the dentine and the overlying hypermineralized acrodin cap; small tubules are radiating at an angle to the long axis of the canals, interpreted as residual spaces left by odontoblast cell processes. This is the first detailed account of vascular acrodin encountered in a pycnodo

A new generic name, Semigothograptus, for Gothograptus? meganassa Rickards & Palmer, 2002, from the Silurian post-lundgreni Biozone recovery phase, and comparative morphology of retiolitids from the lowermost upper Homerian (upper Wenlock).

Gothograptus? meganassa Rickards & Palmer, 2002 is assigned to a new genus Semigothograptus. New, well preserved material from the dubius/nassa Biozone (upper Homerian, Silurian) of the Bartoszyce IG-1 drill core Poland is described. This provides a new phylogenetic perspective on the evolution of post-lundgreni Event retiolitines. Semigothograptus meganassa is considered to be a descendant of Gothograptus nassa, although one of the most significant differences between these forms is the position of the nema, and narrow finite tubarium ending in an appendix in G. nassa. S. meganassa possesses

At the crossroads of steroid hormone biosynthesis: the role, substrate specificity and evolutionary development of CYP17.

Cytochrome P450s play critical roles in the metabolism of various bioactive compounds. One of the crucial functions of cytochrome P450s in Chordata is in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones. Steroid 17alpha-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase (CYP17) is localized in endoplasmic reticulum membranes of steroidogenic cells. CYP17 catalyzes the 17alpha-hydroxylation reaction of delta4-C₂₁ steroids (progesterone derivatives) and delta5-C₂₁ steroids (pregnenolone derivatives) as well as the 17,20-lyase reaction producing C₁₉-steroids, a key branch point in steroid hormone biosynthesis. Depending on CYP17 activ

Evolutionary traces of miniaturization in a giant-Comparative anatomy of brain and brain nerves in Bathochordaeus stygius (Tunicata, Appendicularia).

Appendicularia comprises 70 marine, invertebrate, chordate species. Appendicularians play important ecological and evolutionary roles, yet their morphological disparity remains understudied. Most appendicularians are small, develop rapidly, and with a stereotyped cell lineage, leading to the hypothesis that Appendicularia derived progenetically from an ascidian-like ancestor. Here, we describe the detailed anatomy of the central nervous system of Bathochordaeus stygius, a giant appendicularian from the mesopelagic. We show that the brain consists of a forebrain with on average smaller and more

The Fish Pathogen "Candidatus Clavichlamydia salmonicola"-A Missing Link in the Evolution of Chlamydial Pathogens of Humans.

Chlamydiae like Chlamydia trachomatis and Chlamydia psittaci are well-known human and animal pathogens. Yet, the chlamydiae are a much larger group of evolutionary ancient obligate intracellular bacteria that includes predominantly symbionts of protists and diverse animals. This makes them ideal model organisms to study evolutionary transitions from symbionts in microbial eukaryotes to pathogens of humans. To this end, comparative genome analysis has served as an important tool. Genome sequence data for many chlamydial lineages are, however, still lacking, hampering our understanding of their

Getting a Head with Ptychodera flava Larval Regeneration.

Severe injury to the central nervous system of chordates often results in permanent and irreversible mental and physical challenges. While some chordates are able to repair and/or regenerate portions of their nervous system, no chordate has been shown to be able to regenerate all regions of its central nervous system after catastrophic injury or amputation. Some hemichordates, on the other hand, are able to efficiently regenerate all neural structures, including their dorsal, hollow neural tube after complete ablation. Solitary hemichordates are marine acorn worms and a sister group to the ech

Gene expression in notochord and nuclei pulposi: a study of gene families across the chordate phylum.

The transition from notochord to vertebral column is a crucial milestone in chordate evolution and in prenatal development of all vertebrates. As ossification of the vertebral bodies proceeds, involutions of residual notochord cells into the intervertebral discs form the nuclei pulposi, shock-absorbing structures that confer flexibility to the spine. Numerous studies have outlined the developmental and evolutionary relationship between notochord and nuclei pulposi. However, the knowledge of the similarities and differences in the genetic repertoires of these two structures remains limited, als

A photoactivatable green-fluorescent protein from the phylum Ctenophora.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Genes for the family of green-fluorescent proteins (GFPs) have been found in more than 100 species of animals, with some species containing six or more copies producing a variety of colours. Thus far, however, these species have all been within three phyla: Cnidaria, Arthropoda and Chordata. We have discovered GFP-type fluorescent proteins in the phylum Ctenophora, the comb jellies. The ctenophore proteins share the xYG chromophore motif of all other characterized GFP-type proteins. These proteins exhibit the uncommon property of reversible photoactivation, in which fluorescent emission become

Studying Regeneration in Ascidians: An Historical Overview.

Ascidians are sessile tunicates, that is, marine animals belonging to the phylum Chordata and considered the sister group of vertebrates. They are widespread in all the seas, constituting abundant communities in various ecosystems. Among chordates, only tunicates are able to reproduce asexually, forming colonies. The high regenerative potentialities enabling tunicates to regenerate damaged body parts, or the whole body, represent a peculiarity of this taxon. Here we review the methodological approaches used in more than a century of biological studies to induce regeneration in both solitary an

Marine Antimicrobial Peptides: An Emerging Nightmare to the Life-Threatening Pathogens.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens due to improper usage of conventional antibiotics has created a global health crisis. Alternatives to antibiotics being an urgent need, the scientific community is forced to search for new antimicrobials. This exploration has led to the discovery of antimicrobial peptides, a group of small peptides occurring in different phyla such as Porifera, Cnidaria, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata, and Chordata, as a component of their innate immune system. The marine environment, possessing immense diversity of organisms, is undoubtedly one of

The feeding system of Tiktaalik roseae: an intermediate between suction feeding and biting.

Changes to feeding structures are a fundamental component of the vertebrate transition from water to land. Classically, this event has been characterized as a shift from an aquatic, suction-based mode of prey capture involving cranial kinesis to a biting-based feeding system utilizing a rigid skull capable of capturing prey on land. Here we show that a key intermediate, Tiktaalik roseae, was capable of cranial kinesis despite significant restructuring of the skull to facilitate biting and snapping. Lateral sliding joints between the cheek and dermal skull roof, as well as independent mobility

Dynamic modification of oral innervation during metamorphosis in Branchiostoma belcheri, the oriental lancelet.

The oral apparatus in lancelets undergoes a remarkable modification during larval development, especially during metamorphosis, when the oral innervation is radically altered. The larval mouth opens on the left side at the early larval stage, and a peripheral nerve network, the oral nerve ring (ONR), develops around it. The ONR enlarges as the mouth expands caudally, eventually receiving fibers from nerves as far back as the tenth on the left side. The mouth shrinks during metamorphosis, and with this change the ONR regresses; the posterior sixth to tenth nerves become freed from the connectio

Partners or passengers? Revisiting the association between diatoms and aquatic animals.

Numerous studies have revealed the importance of research on the communities capable of colonizing animal surfaces (epibionts) and the animals on which they live (basibionts). Very few studies have considered epizoic diatoms, and there are gaps and biases in our knowledge, including the choice of basibionts, the methods used, and the habitats in which they live. This literature review aims to (i) identify the main basibionts that host diatom communities and the diatom taxa associated with them, in both marine and freshwater environments; (ii) explore the key ecological factors shaping these di

Gills are not the primary site of gas exchange in the suspension-feeding hemichordate Protoglossus graveolens.

The gills are hypothesized to play a key role in early vertebrate evolution by replacing the skin as the primary site of gas exchange. In this scenario, water flow across the gills for suspension feeding was coopted for gas exchange in stem vertebrates, facilitating the evolution of larger, active fishes. This is supported by a stem-vertebrate origin for structures increasing gill capacity for gas exchange. However, these structures might have enhanced an already dominant capacity at ancestral deuterostome gills. To test this, we characterized gill function in the suspension-feeding hemichorda
