Fluctuations in Precambrian atmospheric oxygenation recorded by chromium isotopes.

Geochemical data suggest that oxygenation of the Earth's atmosphere occurred in two broad steps. The first rise in atmospheric oxygen is thought to have occurred between approximately 2.45 and 2.2 Gyr ago, leading to a significant increase in atmospheric oxygen concentrations and concomitant oxygenation of the shallow surface ocean. The second increase in atmospheric oxygen appears to have taken place in distinct stages during the late Neoproterozoic era ( approximately 800-542 Myr ago), ultimately leading to oxygenation of the deep ocean approximately 580 Myr ago, but details of the evolution

Chromium isotopes tracking the resurgence of hexavalent chromium contamination in a past-contaminated area in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, northern Italy.

The origin of a resurgent hexavalent chromium contamination in groundwater from a phreatic aquifer in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region plain was investigated by chromium isotopic systematics. The area underwent a severe Cr(VI) contamination by industrial effluents in 1997, when Cr(VI) concentration in groundwater reached 4500 µg/L. In subsequent years the contamination naturally attenuated, totally disappearing in 2003. A renewal of water contamination was observed in 2008, Cr(VI) reaching 1560 µg/L. The δ53Cr value in groundwater and extracts from sediments was measured in 2009-2011, and it r

Requirements for Chromium Reactors for Use in the Determination of H Isotopes in Compound-Specific Stable Isotope Analysis of Chlorinated Compounds.

There is a strong need for careful quality control in hydrogen compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) of halogenated compounds. This arises in part due to the lack of universal design of the chromium (Cr) reactors. In this study, factors that optimize the critical performance parameter, linearity, for the Cr reduction method for hydrogen isotope analysis were identified and evaluated. These include the effects of short and long vertically mounted reactors and temperature profiles on trapping of Cl to ensure accurate and precise hydrogen isotope measurements. This paper demonstrates t

Use of carbon stable isotopes to monitor biostimulation and electron donor fate in chromium-contaminated groundwater.

Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is a common inorganic contaminant in industrial areas and represents a serious threat to human health due its toxicity. Here we report experimental results from a field-scale investigation of Cr(VI) bio-immobilization at Hanford 100H reservation, a U.S Department of Energy facility (Washington State, USA). Microbial Cr(VI) reduction was stimulated via injection of a13C-labeled sodium lactate solution into the high-permeability aquifer consisting of gravel and coarse sand sediments. Concentrations and carbon isotope ratios of metabolites, including dissolved inorganic

Determination of hexavalent chromium reduction using Cr stable isotopes: isotopic fractionation factors for permeable reactive barrier materials.

Cr stable isotope measurements can provide improved estimates of the extent of Cr(VI) reduction to less toxic Cr(III). The relationship between observed (53)Cr/(52)Cr ratio shifts and the extent of reduction can be calibrated by determining the isotopic fractionation factor for relevant reactions. Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) made of Fe(0) and in situ redox manipulation (ISRM) zones effectively remediate Cr-contaminated aquifers. Here, we determine the isotopic fractionations for dominant reductants in reactive barriers and reduced sediments obtained from an ISRM zone at the US DOE's Hanf

Application of chromium catalysis technology to compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis of natural gas samples.

An easy-to-use and efficient approach for the catalytic pyrolysis of hydrocarbon gas here is proposed and tested, which allowed the precise measurement of δ2H. This method requires the reaction tube filled with twisted chromium wire, establishing a gas chromatography-Chromium wire/high temperature conversion-isotope ratio mass spectrometer (GC‒Cr/HTC‒IRMS) system. The approach described here has many remarkable advantages over other techniques. In comparison to traditional carbon-coating pyrolysis technique, this proposed method greatly reduces the pyrolysis temperature of the hydrocarbon gas,

Using chromium stable isotope ratios to quantify Cr(VI) reduction: lack of sorption effects.

Chromium stable isotope values can be effectively used to monitor reduction of Cr(VI) in natural waters. We investigate effects of sorption during transport of Cr(VI) which may also shift Cr isotopes values, complicating efforts to quantify reduction. This study shows that Cr stable isotope fractionation caused by sorption is negligible. Equilibrium fractionation of Cr stable isotopes between dissolved Cr(VI) and Cr(VI) adsorbed onto gamma-Al2O3 and goethite is less than 0.04 per thousand (53Cr/52Cr) under environmentally relevant pH conditions. Batch experiments at pH 4.0 and pH 6.0 were cond

Hydrogen isotopic analysis with a chromium-packed reactor of organic compounds of relevance to ecological, archaeological, and forensic applications.

RATIONALE: The δ(2) H values of some nitrogen-containing organic compounds measured by High-Temperature Conversion (HTC) with a glassy carbon reactor have been shown to be inaccurate. A probable explanation for these analytical inaccuracies is the formation of HCN, allowing some hydrogen atoms to escape isotope ratio measurement. We assess this isotopic effect in sample types commonly used for (paleo)ecological, environmental, archaeological, and forensic investigations. METHODS: The δ(2) HVSMOW-SLAP values and mass fraction H using a factory-recommended glassy carbon HTC reactor packing were

Hexavalent chromium quantification by isotope dilution mass spectrometry in potentially contaminated soils from south Italy.

Due to carcinogenicity of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], its accurate quantification in Cr-contaminated soils is of paramount importance. The aim of this work was to quantify Cr(VI) by species-specific IDMS in soil samples from two Italian case studies: A) farmland potentially contaminated by pseudo-total Cr and Zn and heavy hydrocarbons due to past illegal burial of tannery wastes; B) Solofrana valley where volcanic soils are potentially contaminated by pseudo-total Cr and Cu due to tannery activities. Hexavalent Cr extraction from soils was performed by focused microwaves (5 min at 80 °C) usi

Use of the enriched stable isotope Cr-50 as a tracer to study the metabolism of chromium (III) in normal and diabetic rats.

The activable enriched stable isotope Cr-50 compound Cr2O3 was used as a tracer to study the metabolism of chromium(III) [CR(III)] intragastrically administered in normal and diabetic rats. The comparison of absorption, distribution, and excretion in organs and tissues of the two groups do not show much alteration, but some differences exist indeed. The contents of 51Cr radioactivity of the diabetic rats appear to be of higher retention than in most studied organisms. The urinary 51Cr excretion of diabetics is significantly higher than that of normal rats. Therefore, a conclusion can be drawn

Compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis of heteroatom-bearing compounds via gas chromatography-chromium-based high-temperature conversion (Cr/HTC)-isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

The traditional high-temperature conversion (HTC) approach toward compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) of hydrogen for heteroatom-bearing (i.e., N, Cl, S) compounds has been afflicted by fractionation bias due to formation of byproducts HCN, HCl, and H2S. This study presents a chromium-based high-temperature conversion (Cr/HTC) approach for organic compounds containing nitrogen, chlorine, and sulfur. Following peak separation along a gas chromatographic (GC) column, the use of thermally stable ceramic Cr/HTC reactors at 1100-1500 °C and chemical sequestration of N, Cl, and S by chr

On-line hydrogen-isotope measurements of organic samples using elemental chromium: an extension for high temperature elemental-analyzer techniques.

The high temperature conversion (HTC) technique using an elemental analyzer with a glassy carbon tube and filling (temperature conversion/elemental analysis, TC/EA) is a widely used method for hydrogen isotopic analysis of water and many solid and liquid organic samples with analysis by isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). However, the TC/EA IRMS method may produce inaccurate δ(2)H results, with values deviating by more than 20 mUr (milliurey = 0.001 = 1‰) from the true value for some materials. We show that a single-oven, chromium-filled elemental analyzer coupled to an IRMS substantially

Compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis of fluorine-, chlorine-, bromine- and iodine-bearing organics using gas chromatography-chromium-based high-temperature conversion (Cr/HTC) isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

RATIONALE: The conventional high-temperature conversion (HTC) approach towards hydrogen compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of halogen-bearing (F, Cl, Br, I) organics suffers from incomplete H2 yields and associated hydrogen isotope fractionation due to generation of HF, HCl, HBr, and HI byproducts. Moreover, the traditional off-line combustion of highly halogenated compounds results in incomplete recovery of water as an intermediary compound for hydrogen isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), and hence also leads to isotope fractionation. This study presents an optimized chromium-based

Microbially induced chromium isotope fractionation and trace elements behavior in lower Cambrian microbialites from the Jaíba Member, Bambuí Basin, Brazil.

In east-central Brazil, the Ediacaran-Cambrian Bambuí Basin has the potential to provide a record of unique geochemical responses of Earth's ocean and atmosphere evolution during this key time interval. From this perspective, we studied an interval of the upper Bambuí Basin using sedimentologic, stratigraphic, and chemostratigraphic tools. The lower Cambrian Jaíba Member of the uppermost Serra da Saudade Formation is an interval of up to 60 m-thick of carbonate rocks disposed into two shallowing upward trends. Inner to outer ramp and high-energy shoal deposits are described, in which laminated

Optimization of on-line hydrogen stable isotope ratio measurements of halogen- and sulfur-bearing organic compounds using elemental analyzer-chromium/high-temperature conversion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-Cr/HTC-IRMS).

RATIONALE: Accurate hydrogen isotopic analysis of halogen- and sulfur-bearing organics has not been possible with traditional high-temperature conversion (HTC) because the formation of hydrogen-bearing reaction products other than molecular hydrogen (H2 ) is responsible for non-quantitative H2 yields and possible hydrogen isotopic fractionation. Our previously introduced, new chromium-based EA-Cr/HTC-IRMS (Elemental Analyzer-Chromium/High-Temperature Conversion Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry) technique focused primarily on nitrogen-bearing compounds. Several technical and analytical issues co

Stable isotope analysis of non-exchangeable hydrogen in carbohydrates derivatised with N-methyl-bis-trifluoroacetamide by gas chromatography - Chromium silver reduction/High temperature Conversion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-CrAg/HTC-IRMS).

A novel procedure for the rapid isotope analysis of the carbon-bound non-exchangeable (CBNE) hydrogen in mono and disaccharides has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of detecting undeclared addition of exogenous sugar products in foods and beverages susceptible to economically motivated adulteration. The procedure utilizes a simple one-step reaction, with the derivatising agent N-methyl-bis-trifluoroacetamide, to substitute the exchangeable hydroxyl-hydrogens with trifluoroacetate derivatives that are sufficiently volatile to be separated and measured by a gas chromatograph coupled

Establishing a chromium-reactor design for measuring delta2H values of solid polyhalogenated compounds using direct elemental analysis and stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

2H/1H isotope ratios of polyhalogenated compounds were determined by elemental analysis and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS). Initial measurements with standard EA-IRMS equipment, which used high-temperature pyrolysis to convert the organic compounds into hydrogen, did not achieve significant signals for polychlorinated pesticides and related compounds, presumably due to the formation of HCl instead of hydrogen. To reverse this problematic reaction, a chromium reactor was incorporated into the element analyzer system, which scavenged Cl, forming chromium chloride and releasing hydroge

Tissue contents and subcellular distribution of chromium and other trace metals in experimental diabetic rats after intravenous injection of Cr 50-enriched stable isotopic tracer solution.

In order to study the metabolism of essential trace elements in diabetics, we studied alloxan-diabetic rats for the distribution patterns of chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in the liver, kidney, pancreas, and testes, as well as in the organ subcellular fractions. Normal rats were used as controls. Cr 50-enriched stable isotopic tracer solution was given by intravenous injection to avoid the difficulties of estimation of Cr status. Our data show that the concentrations of Zn in liver and kidney, of Co, Fe, and Zn in pancreas, and of Fe and Zn in testes of the

Isotopic disproportionation during hydrogen isotopic analysis of nitrogen-bearing organic compounds.

RATIONALE: High-precision hydrogen isotope ratio analysis of nitrogen-bearing organic materials using high-temperature conversion (HTC) techniques has proven troublesome in the past. Formation of reaction products other than molecular hydrogen (H(2)) has been suspected as a possible cause of incomplete H(2) yield and hydrogen isotopic fractionation. METHODS: The classical HTC reactor setup and a modified version including elemental chromium, both operated at temperatures in excess of 1400 °C, have been compared using a selection of nitrogen-bearing organic compounds, including caffeine. Infrared Matrix-Isolation and Theoretical Studies of the Reactions of Bis(benzene)chromium with Ozone.

Reactions of bis(benzene)chromium (Bz2Cr) and ozone (O3) were studied using low-temperature argon matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy with supporting DFT calculations. When Bz2Cr and O3 were co-deposited, they reacted upon matrix deposition to produce two new prominent peaks in the infrared spectrum at 431 cm-1 and 792 cm-1. These peaks increased upon annealing the matrix to 35 K and decreased upon UV irradiation at λ = 254 nm. The oxygen-18 and mixed oxygen-16,18 isotopic shift pattern of the peak at 792 cm-1 is consistent with the antisymmetric stretch of a symmetric ozonide species. DFT
