[Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A chronic inflammatory disease].

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease caused by a chronic inflammatory response induced by the inhalation of cigarette smoke or toxic particles/gases in the airways. However, we actually know that COPD is a disease that does not only induce inflammation in lung parenchyma and bronchi, but also provokes systemic inflammation which plays a role in multiple comorbidities. Thereby, treatment of COPD should not only focus on the bronchi to relieve symptoms, improve respiratory function and reduce the rate of exacerbations, but must also be extended to the systemic effects of the

Kidney Disease: Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 37 million US adults. It is characterized by damage to the renal glomeruli, vascular supply, and/or tubulointerstitium through complex processes involving inflammation, fibrosis, and hyperfiltration. CKD typically is asymptomatic but may be detected incidentally via urinalysis showing proteinuria or blood test results showing an elevated creatinine level. The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation is the most accurate creatinine-based method for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in routine practice. Cystatin C level m

Consequences of chronic kidney disease in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: The combination of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a higher prevalence of comorbidities and increased mortality. The impact of kidney function on patient-centered outcomes in COPD has not been evaluated. METHODS: Patients from the German COPD and Systemic Consequences - Comorbidities Network (COSYCONET) cohort COPD were analysed. CKD was diagnosed if the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) measurements were < 60 mL/min/1.73m2 at study inclusion and six month later. The effect of CKD, on comorbidities, symptom

Chronic Kidney Disease--Chronic Liver Disease. An Immunologic Cross-talk.

The relationship between the kidney and other organs is notable. The best known is the relation with the cardiovascular system. Relationships with other organs are less studied, although their involvement sometimes dominates the clinical picture and the outcome of disease. The paper analyzes the kidney-liver relationship, namely chronic kidney disease and chronic liver disease from an immune viewpoint. The immune system operates as a unitary whole. There is an interdependence between the immune system of the liver, considered a lymphoid organ, and the kidney, whose participation in immune proc

[Chronic liver diseases in patients with chronic kidney disease].

The morphological and functional integrity of the liver is vital to human health in general as well as to patients with renal disease. Any chronic liver disease will eventually lead to liver insufficiency. Liver enzymes are routinely measured to assess liver function in patients with or without renal failure. The use of standard reference values of aminotransferases to help detect liver disease is less useful in patients on chronic dialysis therapy. Some investigators have suggested that, to increase the sensitivity of liver function tests among dialysis patients, lower "normal" values of amin

Chronic Kidney Disease.

Nearly 14% of Americans have chronic kidney disease (CKD), which includes persistent decrements in glomerular filtration rate or the presence of albuminuria. Although CKD is commonly attributed to diabetes or hypertension, there is growing awareness of the interplay among cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic health. Progression of CKD can result in metabolic abnormalities and end-stage kidney disease, but cardiovascular events are even more common. The main goals of CKD treatment include slowing the decline in kidney function, preventing cardiovascular disease, and treating metabolic complica

Chronic kidney disease.

Globally, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease is estimated to be approximately 850 million cases, with approximately 4 million individuals needing kidney replacement therapy for kidney failure. By 2050, chronic kidney disease is projected to become the fifth leading underlying cause of death worldwide. Despite its numerous causes, chronic kidney disease can be screened for, diagnosed, and staged with simple laboratory tests. Individuals with chronic kidney disease are at increased risk of kidney failure and many other health implications. Risk of premature cardiovascular disease is partic

Chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined by persistent abnormalities of kidney function or structure that have consequences for the health. A progressive decline of excretory kidney function has effects on body homeostasis. CKD is tightly associated with accelerated cardiovascular disease and severe infections, and with premature death. Kidney failure without access to kidney replacement therapy is fatal - a reality in many regions of the world. CKD can be the consequence of a single cause, but CKD in adults frequently relates rather to sequential injuries accumulating over the life course or t

Chronic Ear Disease.

Chronic ear disease is composed of a spectrum of otologic disorders intrinsically tied to Eustachian tube dysfunction. Presentation can range from asymptomatic findings on physical examination to critically ill patients with intracranial complications. Internists represent the first line in diagnosis of these conditions, making awareness of the common signs and symptoms essential. With surgical management often required, partnership between internal medicine and otolaryngology is fundamental in the management of patients with chronic ear disease.

Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is the most common symptomatic phagocytic defect. It is caused by mutations in genes encoding protein subunits of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase complex. CGD is characterized by a defective intracellular killing of phagocytosed organisms due to a defective oxidative burst in the neutrophils and macrophages. It is inherited in either X-linked recessive or autosomal recessive pattern. Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus species are the most common organisms reported. Infections with Burkholderia, Serratia, and Nocardia warran

Chronic Lyme disease.

Chronic Lyme disease is a poorly defined diagnosis that is usually given to patients with prolonged, unexplained symptoms or with alternative medical diagnoses. Data do not support the proposition that chronic, treatment-refractory infection with Borrelia burgdorferi is responsible for the many conditions that get labeled as chronic Lyme disease. Prolonged symptoms after successful treatment of Lyme disease are uncommon, but in rare cases may be severe. Prolonged courses of antibiotics neither prevent nor ameliorate these symptoms and are associated with considerable harm.

Chronic wasting disease.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease of free-ranging and farmed ungulates (deer, elk, and moose) in North America and South Korea. First described by the late E.S. Williams and colleagues in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming in the 1970s, CWD has increased tremendously both in numerical and geographical distribution, reaching prevalence rates as high as 50% in free-ranging and >90% in captive deer herds in certain areas of USA and Canada. CWD is certainly the most contagious prion infection, with significant horizontal transmission of infectious prions by, e.g., urine, feces,

[Chronic kidney disease].

Chronic kidney disease progresses gradually, often without symptoms, toward chronic kidney failure, with the rate of progression varying from patient to patient. Management of the condition relies on monitoring glomerular filtration rate and anticipating complications. The care pathway involves numerous healthcare professionals and relies on shared decision-making, patient education, and enhanced coordination in advanced stages. The goal is to prevent emergencies and, when necessary, prepare an appropriate renal replacement therapy (dialysis, transplantation, or conservative management).

UNLABELLED: In a traditional epiglottis biopsy surgery, the operator performs the direct laryngoscopy to visualise an operating field. However, in patients with tumour-altered epiglottis, this procedure can be unsuccessful, because of difficult laryngeal exposure (DLE). This term refers to an insufficient visualisation of larynx, according to anatomical and pathological lesions. A CASE REPORT: The aim of paper was to present a video laryngoscopy performed for surgical purpose in patient with tumour-altered epiglottis. Woman 52 year old was admitted to hospital for planned surgical epiglottis

Chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease is a progressive disease with no cure and high morbidity and mortality that occurs commonly in the general adult population, especially in people with diabetes and hypertension. Preservation of kidney function can improve outcomes and can be achieved through non-pharmacological strategies (eg, dietary and lifestyle adjustments) and chronic kidney disease-targeted and kidney disease-specific pharmacological interventions. A plant-dominant, low-protein, and low-salt diet might help to mitigate glomerular hyperfiltration and preserve renal function for longer, possibly whil

Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

Chronic granulomatous disease is a clinical condition that stems from inactivating mutations in NOX2 and its auxiliary proteins. Together, these proteins form the phagocyte NADPH oxidase enzyme that generates superoxide. Superoxide (O2ċ-) and its reduced product hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) give rise to several additional reactive oxygen species (ROS), which together are necessary for adequate killing of pathogens. Thus, CGD patients, with a phagocyte NADPH oxidase that is not properly functioning, suffer from recurrent, life-threatening infections with certain bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. Here, I

Chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined by persistent urine abnormalities, structural abnormalities or impaired excretory renal function suggestive of a loss of functional nephrons. The majority of patients with CKD are at risk of accelerated cardiovascular disease and death. For those who progress to end-stage renal disease, the limited accessibility to renal replacement therapy is a problem in many parts of the world. Risk factors for the development and progression of CKD include low nephron number at birth, nephron loss due to increasing age and acute or chronic kidney injuries caused by t

[Chronic kidney disease].

The management of the renal patient includes attempts to make an early diagnosis, prevention of disease progression, and treatment of common complications of chronic kidney disease. Regular assessment and control to defined target levels is crucial for arterial hypertension, proteinuria, secondary hyperparathyroidism, metabolic acidosis, and renal anemia. Another problem remains the excessive cardiovascular mortality of renal patients. New data from multiple multicenter trials have changed existing treatment guidelines. New drugs have become available. This update provides an overview about ne
