[Chronobiological aspects of bipolar disorder].

BACKGROUND: Numerous symptoms of bipolar disorder are regulated by the circadian rhythm. Because of this association it is assumed that disruption of the circadian rhythm may be part of the pathomechanism of bipolar disorder. OBJECTIVES: A comparison and subsequent critical discussion of the current data situation on chronobiological aspects of bipolar disorder are presented. METHODS: A narrative literature search was carried out and the main findings are presented in a summarized form. RESULTS: There are a large number of animal and human studies investigating the connection between disord

Chronobiology of bipolar disorder: therapeutic implication.

Multiple lines of evidence suggest that psychopathological symptoms of bipolar disorder arise in part from a malfunction of the circadian system, linking the disease with an abnormal internal timing. Alterations in circadian rhythms and sleep are core elements in the disorders, characterizing both mania and depression and having recently been shown during euthymia. Several human genetic studies have implicated specific genes that make up the genesis of circadian rhythms in the manifestation of mood disorders with polymorphisms in molecular clock genes not only showing an association with the d

[Affective disorders: News in chronobiological models].

Good news on chronobiological models of affective disorders are coming from a therapeutic innovation in the field of antidepressive action. Coming back to fundamentals by reconsidering the importance of the role of biological rhythms impairment in dysthymic pathology, a new interest bored on studies exploring short periodicities, so-called "ultradian" ones, on the basis of pharmacodynamics in the concept of therapeutic "window" of administration. The priority of circadian rhythms due to the major external biological desynchronization in depression, as well as the importance of sleep and alertn

Relevance of the chronobiological and non-chronobiological actions of melatonin for enhancing therapeutic efficacy in neurodegenerative disorders.

Melatonin is an indolamine with a large spectrum of functions that can be divided into chronobiotic and nonchronobiotic. Chronobiotic effects are mediated by the daily rhythm of melatonin in the plasma due to nocturnal pineal synthesis, whereas the melatonin produced by other cells, such as gastrointestinal and immune competent cells, is independent of the light/dark cycle and exert non-chronobiotic effects. The concentrations achieved by the two sources are significantly different, varying in the pM-nM range in the plasma, and may achieve concentrations in the mM range when released locally b

The chronobiology and neurobiology of winter seasonal affective disorder.

This review summarizes research on the chronobiology and neurobiology of winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a recurrent subtype of depression characterized by a predictable onset in the fall/winter months and spontaneous remission in the spring/summer period. Chronobiological mechanisms related to circadian rhythms, melatonin, and photoperiodism play a significant role in many cases of SAD, and treatment of SAD can be optimized by considering individual differences in key chronobiological markers. Converging evidence also points to a role for the major monoamine neurotransmitters seroto

Chronobiology of Mood Disorders: The Role of the Biological Clock in Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

Mood disorders, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and seasonal affective disorder, exhibit significant heterogeneity, with disturbances in biological rhythms playing a central role. These disturbances not only contribute to the onset and progression of mood disorders but also serve as important predictors of relapse ("Chronos syndrome") and treatment response. Circadian disruptions, which are influenced by factors such as seasonality, jet lag, shift work, and childbirth, are hallmarks of mood episodes and are pivotal in transitions between mood states. Longitudinal studies

Using Chronobiological Phenotypes to Address Heterogeneity in Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a neuropsychiatric mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of mania and depression in addition to disruptions in sleep, energy, appetite, and cognitive functions-rhythmic behaviors that typically change on daily cycles. BD symptoms can also be provoked by seasonal changes, sleep, and/or circadian disruption, indicating that chronobiological factors linked to the circadian clock may be a common feature in the disorder. Research indicates that BD exists on a clinical spectrum, with distinct subtypes often intersecting with other psychiatric disorders. This hete

Role of Chronobiology as a Transdisciplinary Field of Research: Its Applications in Treating Mood Disorders.

Chronobiology is a field that studies the effects of time on biological systems. Periodicity is of particular interest. The master biological clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus controls daily rhythms of core body temperature, rest-activity cycle, physiological and behavioral functions, psychomotor functions and mood in humans. The clock genes are involved in the generation of the circadian rhythms and the biological clock is synchronized to solar day by direct photic inputs. Various circadian rhythm abnormalities have been demonstrated in mood disorders such as unipolar depression, bipolar d

Light therapy for bipolar disorders: Clinical recommendations from the international society for bipolar disorders (ISBD) Chronobiology and Chronotherapy Task Force.

The International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) Chronobiology and Chronotherapy Task Force conducted a comprehensive review to deliver concise evidence-based recommendations on the use of bright light therapy (BLT) for bipolar disorder (BD). Adjunctive BLT is likely an efficacious acute treatment for bipolar depression as implicated by higher quality evidence. The position of maintenance BLT for relapse prevention awaits further investigation. Protocols of effective BLT in BD are similar to parameters indicated for treatment of seasonal and non-seasonal major depressive disorder. Anti-m

Essential Information About Chronobiology and Chronotherapy for the Optimal Care of People With Bipolar Disorders: An Expert Consensus.

INTRODUCTION: Circadian dysfunction is involved in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorders (BD), and circadian-based interventions are gaining recognition in their management. Moreover, basic and epidemiologic research has generated findings inspiring circadian-informed self- and clinician-management strategies. Despite these gains, many Clinical Practice Guidelines and clinical training programs have not incorporated this evidence in their recommendations and curricula. This International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) Chronobiology and Chronotherapy Task Force position paper reports a

Disrupting the Clock: Meta-Analysis of Irregular Night Shifts and Migraine, Proposing Shift Work Migraine Disorder with Chronobiology Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is linked to circadian rhythm disruptions, with morning attack peaks, circadian variations in trigeminal pain sensitivity, anterior hypothalamus involvement, and core circadian clock gene activity. Irregular night shift work, affecting up to 50% of the population, including new parents and students, causes significant circadian disruption. We hypothesize that irregular night shifts increase migraine prevalence compared to fixed schedules. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies up to March 27, 2025, assessed migraine prevalence in irregular

The association between mood state and chronobiological characteristics in bipolar I disorder: a naturalistic, variable cluster analysis-based study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple types of chronobiological disturbances have been reported in bipolar disorder, including characteristics associated with general activity levels, sleep, and rhythmicity. Previous studies have focused on examining the individual relationships between affective state and chronobiological characteristics. The aim of this study was to conduct a variable cluster analysis in order to ascertain how mood states are associated with chronobiological traits in bipolar I disorder (BDI). We hypothesized that manic symptomatology would be associated with disturbances of rhythm. RESULTS
