Chronobiology is the scientific discipline which considers biological phenomena in relation to time, which assumes itself biological identity. Many physiological processes are cyclically regulated by intrinsic clocks and many pathological events show a circadian time-related occurrence. Even the pituitary-thyroid axis is under the control of a central clock, and the hormones of the pituitary-thyroid axis exhibit circadian, ultradian and circannual rhythmicity. BACKGROUND: Chronobiology is devoted to the study of biological rhythms. It is possible that a given medication may be therapeutic and safe when administered at some time, but subtherapeutic or poorly tolerated at another.
METHODS: We focused on some classes of drugs, widely used by the internists, performing a PubMed search with the single drugs associated with the MeSH terms "Chronotherapy", "Circadian rhythm", and "Chronobiology, phenomena". Among the studies found, we considered only those provided with discrete numerosity or clearly stated methodological characteristics.

Modern chronopharmacology has two main directions: the study of biorhythms influences on drug action and, on the contrary, the estimation of pharmacological sensitivity of rhythmical processes. Different aspects of each direction are discussed. Among them more perspectives ones are the establishment of influences of pathological biorhythms on drug action, the estimation of pharmacological sensitivity of fluctuations with short (minute) period and the study of drug action on the function of central pacemakers (suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus and pineal gland).

The conception of the specific activity of antidepressants is considered from the chronobiological positions. Depression can be based on phasic dissociation between different periods and first of all circadian fluctuation of some physiological functions. Various antidepressants modified biorhythms and promoted their resynchronization. This action probably depended on its influence on the activity of the cerebral pacemaker structures (suprachiasmatic nuclei, hypothalamus and pineal gland).

The authors aim to study the relation existing between the chronology of tooth eruption and delayed growth, whether this is delayed growth with or without low genetic height or delayed growth caused by growth hormone deficit. The 50 children included in the sample were studied from the endocrine and dental points of view and it was found that children whose delayed growth is accompanied by a low genetic height or growth hormone deficit presented retardation in dentition and retardation in bone age. However, a retardation in bone age does not necessarily imply a retardation in dentition.
