Iron Fortification and Bioavailability of Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Seeds and Flour.

Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the most common nutritional disorders, and is mainly due to insufficient intake of bioavailable Fe. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) was examined as a potential vehicle for Fe fortification. Fortificants (FeSO4·7H2O (ferrous sulfate hepta-hydrate), FeSO4·H2O (ferrous sulfate mono-hydrate) and NaFeEDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid iron (iii) sodium salt)) were applied by a spraying and drying method. At 2000 µg g-1 iron fortificant, the fortified split desi seeds (dal), desi flour and kabuli flour supplied 18-19 mg, 16-20 mg and 11-19 mg Fe per 100 g, respectivel

The plant metallothionein 2 from Cicer arietinum forms a single metal-thiolate cluster.

The plant metallothionein 2 from Cicer arietinum (chickpea; cicMT2) is a typical member of this subfamily and features two cysteine-rich regions containing eight and six cysteine residues, respectively, separated by a linker region 41 amino acids in length. This metallothionein thus differs significantly from the well-studied vertebrate forms. A synthetic gene encoding cicMT2 was designed, cloned into a suitable vector, and the protein was over-expressed in Escherichia coli. For the first time, an in-depth spectroscopic characterization of cicMT2 in the presence of divalent metal ions is perfo

Involvement of calcium in ACC-oxidase activity from Cicer arietinum seed embryonic axes.

Both in vivo and in vitro ACC-oxidase activities as well as ethylene production from embryonic axes of chickpea seeds were strongly inhibited by EGTA, a selective extracellular Ca2+ ion chelator, indicating that the influx of Ca2+ is important for enzymatic activity. EGTA inhibition was restored by exogenous Ca2+. Treatments of embryonic axes with either Verapamil and LaCl3 (both Ca2+ channel blockers) or TMB-8 (an intracellular Ca2+ antagonist) provoked an inhibition of both ACC-oxidase activity and ethylene production. These results suggest an involvement of calcium fluxes and intracellular

Latex and chickpea (Cicer arietinum) allergy: first description of a new association.

In this paper we describe the existence of cross-reactivity between allergens from latex and chickpea, a food from the Leguminosae family, which is common in the Mediterranean diet. We present the case report of a spina bifida boy with a clinical relevant food allergy to chickpea (oral syndrome + dysphonia), developing after the appearance of latex allergy symptoms (lip angioedema + intraoperative anaphylaxis). Specific IgE to latex and chickpea was demonstrated by skin prick tests, measurement of patient's serum specific IgE and IgE-immunoblotting. Cross-reactivity was studied by means of EAS

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Seeds as a Reservoir of Endophytic Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria.

The seed microbiome, the primary source of inoculum for plants, may play an important role in plant growth, health and productivity. However, the structure and function of chickpea seed endophytes are poorly characterized. Bacteria with beneficial characteristics can be selected by the plant and transmitted vertically via the seed to benefit the next generation. Studying the diversity and multifunctionality of seed microbial communities can provide innovative opportunities in the field of plant-microbe interaction. This study aimed to isolate, identify and characterize culturable endophytic ba

Albinism does not correlate with biparental inheritance of plastid DNA in interspecific hybrids in Cicer species.

Cultivated chickpea (Cicer arietinum) was crossed with its wild relatives from the genus Cicer to transfer favorable genes from the wider gene pool into the cultivar. Post-hybridization barriers led to yellowing and subsequent senescence from as early as 5 days after fertilization, however, the ovules of hybrid embryos could be rescued in vitro. Hybrids were classified as green, partially green or albino. The hybrid status of regenerated plantlets in vitro was confirmed by amplification of nuclear DNA markers. To check whether chloroplast development correlated with plastid DNA inheritance in

An innovative screening method for heat stress tolerance in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.).

Reliable field phenotyping for terminal heat stress (THS) tolerance in chickpea is constrained by conventional late-sowing approaches that confound reproductive stress with reduced vegetative growth. We developed and validated a deflowering (DF)-based field screening method that selectively imposes heat stress during the reproductive phase while maintaining normal vegetative vigour. Early flowers were removed to synchronize flowering and delay reproduction by 10-15 days, exposing flowering and pod set to high temperatures (>33 °C). Across two seasons and contrasting genotypes, DF maintained ve

Growth and biochemical parameters of Cicer arietinum L. grown on amended fly ash.

Growth and metal accumulation were investigated in two Cicer arietinum L. varieties (var. CSG-8962 and var. C-235) when grown in various combinations of fly ash (FA) amended with garden soil (GS), press mud (PM) or saw dust (SD). In addition, the levels of photosynthetic pigments, nitrate reductase (NR) activity, cysteine, non-protein thiols (NP-SH), and ascorbic acid were studied. FA amended with GS or PM led to a 5-10 times increase in biomass compared to FA control and was most pronounced in the less metal tolerant variety CSG-8962. Amendment of FA with either GS or PM only moderately incre

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) proteins induce allergic responses in nasobronchial allergic patients and BALB/c mice.

Allergy to chickpea or Garbanzo bean (Cicer arietinum) has been reported in the Indian population. Little information is found regarding allergenic events involved in the chickpea allergy; therefore, chickpea allergenicity assessment was undertaken. In vivo and ex vivo studies were carried out using BALB/c mice. Chickpea skin prick test positive patients have been used to extend this study in humans. Identification of allergens was carried out by simulated gastric fluids assay for pepsin resistant polypeptides and validated by IgE western blotting using chickpea sensitive humans and sensitized

Incorporation of sulfide ions into the cadmium(II) thiolate cluster of Cicer arietinum metallothionein2.

The plant metallothionein2 from Cicer arietinum (chickpea), cic-MT2, is known to coordinate five divalent metal ions such as Zn(II) or Cd(II), which are arranged in a single metal thiolate cluster. When the Zn(II) form of the protein is titrated with Cd(II) ions in the presence of sulfide ions, an increased Cd(II) binding capacity and concomitant incorporation of sulfide ions into the cluster are observed. The exact stoichiometry of this novel cluster, its spectroscopic properties, and the significantly increased pH stability are analyzed with different techniques, including UV and circular di
