A personality SNP? Behavioral genetics in African cichlids.

Speciation is familiar in radiations, but personality is not. In a recent article, Sommer-Trembo et al. linked exploratory behavior in African cichlids to a SNP in the promoter of a gene, the homolog of which is associated with human personality disorders, offering clues about the first fish of this radiation, with implications for vertebrate evolution.

Hydrodynamic drag constrains head enlargement for mouthbrooding in cichlids.

Presumably as an adaptation for mouthbrooding, many cichlid fish species have evolved a prominent sexual dimorphism in the adult head. Since the head of fishes serves as a bow during locomotion, an evolutionary increase in head volume to brood more eggs can trade-off with the hydrodynamic efficiency of swimming. Here, the differences between males and females in three-dimensional shape and size of the external head surfaces and the effect thereof on drag force during locomotion was analysed for the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a maternal mouthbrooder. To do so, three-dimensional body

A new linkage group involved in sex determination in haplotilapiine cichlids.

The high diversity of sex chromosomes and sex determination systems among haplotilapiines suggests that this large cichlid clade is a good model for investigating the evolution of genetics of sex determination. Nonetheless, information about sex determination in this clade remains sparse. The present study reports a microsatellite marker that is closely associated with sex in Xenotilapia rotundiventralis from Lake Tanganyika, Africa. This study is the first to suggest the role of linkage group 17 in sex determination in haplotilapiine cichlids.

Developmental divergence in gene regulation underlies trophic innovation in Lake Victoria cichlids.

The role of developmental shifts in the emergence of ecological diversity during adaptive radiation remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we investigate the developmental gene regulatory landscape of trophic innovation in the rapid adaptive radiation of cichlid fishes from Lake Victoria (LV), which evolved into hundreds of species in less than 16 000 years. By analysing the whole transcriptomes of functionally decoupled oral and pharyngeal jaws from two life stages, we show that both gene and isoform expression are highly developmentally dynamic in ecologically divergent species. Gene regulat

Before the East African Radiation: Sex Chromosome Systems in Basal Haplotilapiine Cichlids.

Cichlid fishes have undergone an extraordinary diversification in East Africa. They also have a high rate of sex chromosome turnover. This clade provides an opportunity to study the rates and patterns of sex chromosome turnover, and the interactions of sex chromosome turnover with adaptation and speciation. Here we investigate the evolution sex chromosomes in the tribes Tilapiini, Coptodonini, Heterotilapiini, Gobiocichlini, Pelmatolapiini, and Oreochromini. We assembled chromosome-scale genomes of male and female Pelmatotilapia mariae. We then mapped pooled sequencing reads for males and fema

Genomic basis of Y-linked dwarfism in cichlids pursuing alternative reproductive tactics.

Sexually antagonistic selection, which favours different optima in males and females, is predicted to play an important role in the evolution of sex chromosomes. Body size is a sexually antagonistic trait in the shell-brooding cichlid fish Lamprologous callipterus, as "bourgeois" males must be large enough to carry empty snail shells to build nests whereas females must be small enough to fit into shells for breeding. In this species, there is also a second male morph: smaller "dwarf" males employ an alternative reproductive strategy by wriggling past spawning females into shells to fertilize e

Ontogeny and social context regulate the circadian activity patterns of Lake Malawi cichlids.

Activity patterns tend to be highly stereotyped and critical for executing many different behaviors including foraging, social interactions, and predator avoidance. Differences in the circadian timing of locomotor activity and rest periods can facilitate habitat partitioning and the exploitation of novel niches. As a consequence, closely related species often display highly divergent activity patterns, suggesting that shifts from diurnal to nocturnal behavior, or vice versa, are critical for survival. In Africa's Lake Malawi alone, there are over 500 species of cichlids, which inhabit diverse

The cichlid oral and pharyngeal jaws are evolutionarily and genetically coupled.

Evolutionary constraints may significantly bias phenotypic change, while "breaking" from such constraints can lead to expanded ecological opportunity. Ray-finned fishes have broken functional constraints by developing two jaws (oral-pharyngeal), decoupling prey capture (oral jaw) from processing (pharyngeal jaw). It is hypothesized that the oral and pharyngeal jaws represent independent evolutionary modules and this facilitated diversification in feeding architectures. Here we test this hypothesis in African cichlids. Contrary to our expectation, we find integration between jaws at multiple ev

Contrasting strategies of hypoxic cardiac performance and metabolism in cichlids and armoured catfish.

The heart of tropical fishes is a particularly useful model system in which to investigate mechanisms of hypoxic tolerance. Here we focus on insights gained from two groups of fishes, cichlids and armoured catfishes. Cichlids respond to hypoxia by entering a sustained hypometabolism with decreased heart performance to match whole animal circulatory needs. Heart rate is decreased along with protein turnover to reduce adenosine triphosphate demand. This occurs despite the inherent capacity for high levels of cardiac power development. Although highly hypoxic tolerant at the whole animal level, t

Redescription of Clinostomum phalacrocoracis metacercariae (Digenea: Clinostomidae) in cichlids from Lake Kinneret, Israel.

Clinostomidae are digeneans characterized by a complex taxonomic history, continuously under revision based on both morphological and molecular analysis. Among the 14 species considered valid so far Clinostomum phalacrocoracis has been well described only at the adult stage, whereas the morphology of the metacercarial stage has been reported only once. During a parasitological survey carried out on 262 wild cichlids sampled from Lake Kinneret (Israel) metacercariae referable to C. phalacrocoracis were found in 18 fingerlings. In this study, we report this clinostomid species for the first time

Cognitive ethology of nest building in a shell-dwelling cichlid.

Across animal taxa, nest-building behavior is performed using a generalizable and flexible action sequence. In order to accomplish its goal (a stable nest), the brain appears to compare intermediate steps in the process to stored neural representations that are reminiscent of cognitive templates. Deviations from these templates drive progress, preferences, and corrections in the execution of this behavior. Here, we investigated the stereotypy vs. plasticity of nest building by the cichlid Lamprologus ocellatus, a fish species that manipulates abandoned snail shells to build shelters for breedi

Description of the embryonic development in the convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata).

We provide a detailed description of embryonic development in the convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) from fertilization to hatching at 26°C, together with a practical staging table anchored to established teleost reference frameworks. Fertilized eggs were obtained by both natural spawning and artificial fertilization. Oocytes were ovoid and adhesive, surrounded by a chorion and a sticky mucous layer. Early development proceeded, in broad outline, through the teleost sequence of meroblastic discoidal cleavage, blastula, gastrula, segmentation and organogenesis. The first cleavage occur

Turbidity drives plasticity in the eyes and brains of an African cichlid.

Natural variation in environmental turbidity correlates with variation in the visual sensory system of many fishes, suggesting that turbidity may act as a strong selective agent on visual systems. Since many aquatic systems experience increased turbidity due to anthropogenic perturbations, it is important to understand the degree to which fish can respond to rapid shifts in their visual environment, and whether such responses can occur within the lifetime of an individual. We examined whether developmental exposure to turbidity (clear, <5 NTU; turbid, ∼9 NTU) influenced the size of morphologic

Serotonin-immunoreactivity in the brain of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus.

Serotonin (5-HT) is an evolutionarily conserved monoaminergic neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system across invertebrates and vertebrates. Although the distribution of 5-HT-immunoreactive (5-HT-ir) neurons is investigated in various fish species, the organization of these neurons in cichlid fishes is poorly understood. These fish are known for their adaptability to diverse environments, food habits, and complex mating and breeding behaviors, including parental care. In this paper, we describe the organization of 5-HT-ir neurons in the brain of the ci

Cannabidiol improves Nile tilapia cichlid fish welfare.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance derived from Cannabis sativa, widely studied in medicine for controlling neural diseases in humans. Besides the positive effects on humans, it also presents anxiolytic proprieties and decreases aggressiveness and stress in mammals. Therefore, CBD has the potential to increase welfare in reared animals, as it seems to reduce negative states commonly experienced in artificial environments. Here, we tested the effect of different CBD doses (0, 1, 10 and 20 mg/kg) on aggressiveness, stress and reproductive development of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) a f

Decision rules diverge between sympatric Featherfin cichlids despite shared preferences, ecology, and evolutionary history.

It has been hypothesized that divergence in animal decision processes can be attributed to differences in information processing mechanisms. However, the required comparative tests of this idea are hindered by ecological, perceptual, or motivational divergence among species that confound a direct analysis of decision processes. To overcome these limitations, we study two closely related, sympatric cichlid fishes (Aulonocranus dewindti and Cyathopharynx furcifer) that share visual capacities, ecological context and object-removal motivations, and we perform a systematic assessment of decisional

Pathological and Tissue-Based Molecular Investigation of Granulomas in Cichlids Reared as Ornamental Fish.

Cichlids include hundreds of species with a high economic value for aquaculture. These fish are subjected to intensive trade and farming that expose them to the risk of infectious diseases. This work focuses on ornamental cichlids held in an aquarium commercial facility presenting emaciation, in order to evaluate the presence of lesions in fish skin and organs. The fish were sampled during routine management activities and subjected to pathological and molecular investigations. The presence of lymphocystis disease virus, typically associated with cutaneous nodular disease, was ruled out. Histo

Flexibility in task performance and division of labour in a cooperatively breeding cichlid.

UNLABELLED: Division of labour is a key feature of cooperative social systems, where task specialization among individuals enhances group efficiency. In the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologus pulcher reproductive division of labour exists, where a dominant breeding pair reproduces while subordinates help in rearing the offspring and perform various tasks to gain acceptance within the group. Larger helpers engage in territory maintenance and predator defence while smaller helpers focus on egg care and deterrence of egg predators. Here we investigated task specialisation, division of

Cognitive flexibility in a Tanganyikan bower-building cichlid, Aulonocranus dewindti.

Cognitive flexibility, the ability to modify one's decision rules to adapt to a new situation, has been extensively studied in many species. In fish, though, data on cognitive flexibility are scarce, especially in the wild. We studied a lekking species of cichlid fish in Lake Tanganyika, Aulonocranus dewindti. Males create sand bowers as spawning sites and maintain them by removing any objects falling into it. In the first part of our experiment, we investigated the existence of spontaneous decision rules for the maintenance of the bowers. We showed that if a snail shell and a stone are placed
