Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is currently the most common marine biotoxin food poisoning worldwide, associated with human consumption of circumtropical fish and marine invertebrates that are contaminated with ciguatoxins. Ciguatoxins are very potent sodium-channel activator neurotoxins, that pose risks to human health at very low concentrations (>0.01 ng per g of fish flesh in the case of the most potent Pacific ciguatoxin). Symptoms of CFP are nonspecific and intoxication in humans is often misdiagnosed. Presently, there is no medically approved treatment of ciguatera. Therefore, to mitigat

Most cases of ciguatera (fish poisoning) result from consumption of the flesh of fishes contaminated with ciguatoxin(s); however, the relatively low toxicity of ciguateric fish flesh has hindered attempts to identify these ciguatoxin(s). Utilising high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectroscopy and mouse bioassay signs we have determined that ciguatoxin-1 (MH+ m/z = 1112), ciguatoxin-2 and ciguatoxin-3 are the major ciguatoxins present in the flesh of ciguateric fish. Ciguatoxin-1, -2 and -3 were present in yields of 0.19, 0.09 and 0.02 microgram/kg flesh, respectively, in Scomberomo

Ciguatera fish poisoning has been responsible for as many as half of all food poisonings in the United States due to fish. Because the initial symptoms often include gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, patients may be discharged from the Emergency Department with a diagnosis of "acute gastroenteritis," only to return soon thereafter. This is a case report of such a patient who was evaluated and discharged only to subsequently return because of worsening of symptoms.

Ciguatoxins (CTXs) and brevetoxins (PbTxs) are phycotoxins that can accumulate along the marine food chain and thus cause seafood poisoning in humans, namely "ciguatera fish poisoning" (CFP) and "neurotoxic shellfish poisoning" (NSP), respectively. CFP is characterized by early gastrointestinal symptoms and typical sensory disorders (paraesthesia, pain, pruritus and cold dysaesthesia), which can persist several weeks and, in some cases, several months or years. NSP is considered a mild form of CFP with similar but less severe symptoms. After inhaled exposure, PbTxs can also cause respiratory t

Ciguatoxin may be a terrible coral fish toxin that can result in poisoning in people who eat fish containing ciguatoxin. Being lack of a convenient and accurate detection method for ciguatoxin, Ciguatera fish poisoning have occurred from time to time. To provide references for detection and prevention of ciguatera fish poisoning, in this paper, the current detection methods of ciguatoxin were reviewed.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is a form of food poisoning caused by the consumption of fish that have accumulated a type of sodium channel activator toxin called ciguatoxins (CTXs), which are produced by dinoflagellates of the genus Gambierdiscus through the food chain. CFP affects more than 50000 people each year. The extremely low level of CTXs in tainted fish has hampered the development of antibodies for the detection of these toxins. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific against major congeners of CTX3C, 51-hydroxyCTX3C, CTX1B, and 54-deoxyCTX1B were prepared by immunization of mice with

Between 2014 and 2016, five cases of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP), involving twenty four individuals, were linked to Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) caught in the coastal waters of the state of New South Wales (NSW) on the east coast of Australia. Previously, documented cases of CFP in NSW were few, and primarily linked to fish imported from other regions. Since 2015, thirteen individuals were affected across four additional CFP cases in NSW, linked to fish imported from tropical locations. The apparent increase in CFP in NSW from locally sourced catch, combined with the risk of C

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) caused by the consumption of fish that have accumulated ciguatoxins (CTXs) affects more than 50000 people annually. The spread of CFP causes enormous damage to public health, fishery resources, and the economies of tropical and subtropical endemic regions. The difficulty in avoiding CFP arises from the lack of sensitive and reliable analytical methods for the detection and quantification of CTXs in contaminated fish, along with the normal appearance, smell, and taste of fish contaminated with the causative toxins. Thus, an accurate, sensitive, routine, and portab

Ciguatera fish poisoning is an illness suffered by > 50,000 people yearly after consumption of fish containing ciguatoxins (CTXs). One of the current methodologies to detect ciguatoxins in fish is a radiolabeled receptor binding assay (RBA(R)). However, the license requirements and regulations pertaining to radioisotope utilization can limit the applicability of the RBA(R) in certain labs. A fluorescence based receptor binding assay (RBA(F)) was developed to provide an alternative method of screening fish samples for CTXs in facilities not certified to use radioisotopes. The new assay is based

The ELISA method has been used to detect possible anticiguatoxin antibodies in the tissues of toxic fishes. Thin lamellae of toxic fish muscles have been brought into contact on the one hand with antibodies obtained after immunization of the rabbit and the mouse by a human serumalbumine ciguatoxin conjugate and on the other hand with human sera of ciguatera convalescent. These various antibodies have been recognized by peroxydase labelled anti-rabbit, -mouse and -human antibodies. It has been not possible to show off specific antibodies of the ciguatoxin in the various immune sera tested by th

"Ciguatera" fish poisoning (CFP) is one of the well-known food poisoning caused by the ingestion of fish that have accumulated trace amounts of ciguatoxins (CTXs). CFP affects more than 50,000 individuals annually. The difficulty in preventing CFP comes from the lack of reliable methods for analysis of CTXs in contaminated fish, together with the normal appearance, taste, and smell of CTX-contaminated fish. Thus, a sensitive, accurate, routine, and portable analytical method to detect CTXs is urgently required. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific against either wing of major CTX congeners (C

Ciguatera poisoning (CP) is a severe global public health problem caused by the consumption of seafood products contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTXs). The growing demand for seafood products requires high-throughput testing for CTX-susceptible seafood, however complex extraction and slow cleanup methods inhibit this goal. Herein, several methods for extracting CTXs from fish tissue were established and compared; these methods are sensitive, specific, and valid while achieving higher sample extraction throughput than currently established protocols. The trial fish material was generated from mul

Ciguatera is a seafood intoxication that results from ingestion of reef fish contaminated with ciguatoxins at levels orally toxic for humans. Precursors of those toxins, gambiertoxins, are produced by benthic dinoflagellates (genus Gambierdiscus), and then accumulated and biotransformed by herbivorous and carnivorous fishes into ciguatoxins, more toxic for humans. In the absence of specific treatment, that disease remains a health problem with otherwise adverse socio-economic impacts. Thus a cost-effective means of detecting ciguatoxins in fish has long been searched for. Many assays have been

Ciguateric syndrome is a food poisoning associated with the consumption of some species of fish that have accumulated ciguatoxins (CTXs) in their tissues. The effects of the syndrome occur with nervous imbalances which have been described for quite some time, and mentioned in sailing literature for centuries. In the last decade, research has been focused on the implementation of analytical methods for toxin identification and the study of action modes of CTXs to design effective treatments. However, an important aspect is to determine the damage that CTXs caused in the organs of affected indiv

Ciguatera poisoning (CP) is one of the most abundant seafood poisonings in the world. CP frequently occurred in the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. In Japan, CP cases have been reported annually, from the subtropical regions, including Okinawa Prefecture and Amami Islands, Kagoshima Prefecture. The principal toxins, named ciguatoxins (CTXs), are bio-synthesized by benthic dinoflagellate of genera Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa. They are bio-transferred herbivorous animals to carnivorous fishes via the food chain. The Ogasawara Islands comprise more than 30 islands,

Ciguatoxins (CTXs) which are produced by dinoflagellates of the genus Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa and share a ladder-shaped polyether structure, are causative compounds of one of the most frequent foodborne illness disease known as ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). CFP was initially found in tropical and subtropical areas but nowadays the dinoflagellates producers of ciguatoxins had spread to European coasts. Therefore, this raises the need of establishing toxicity equivalency factors for the different compounds that can contribute to ciguatera fish poisoning, since biological methods have been re

Ciguatera poisoning has caused illnesses in New Zealand through the consumption of contaminated reef fish imported from Pacific Islands. In May 2020 five people became ill and one was hospitalised following the consumption of Fiji Kawakawa (camouflage grouper; Epinephelus polyphekadion). The fish was purchased in New Zealand but imported from Fiji. The meal remnants were analysed for ciguatoxins, the causative compounds of ciguatera poisoning, and showed the presence of the three main toxic fish metabolites. Other fish tested from the same shipment did not contain detectable levels of ciguatox

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP), one of the most frequently occurring seafood poisonings due to marine finfish consumption, mainly affects the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific region and the Caribbean Sea. The principal class of toxins, ciguatoxins (CTXs) from the Pacific, includes more than 20 derivatives and are classified into two groups, CTX1B and CTX3C congeners, based on their skeletal structures. As part of risk management of CFP by the Japanese government, the import of certain species of fish into Japan is prohibited. Additionally, local governments recommend rejecting certain fis

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is one of the most devastating food-borne illnesses caused by fish consumption. Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are potent neurotoxins synthesized by the benthic microalgae Gambierdiscus spp. and Fukuyoa spp. that are transmitted to fish by grazing and predation. Despite the high incidence of CFP, affecting an estimated number of 50,000 persons per year in tropical and subtropical latitudes, the factors underlying CTXs occurrence are still not well understood. Toxin transfer and dynamics in fish and food-webs are complex. Feeding habits and metabolic pathways determine the to

Ciguatoxins are marine biotoxins that induce the human poisoning syndrome known as ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). In humans, different kinds of neurological symptoms have been reported after CFP, including anxiety, depression and memory loss. Repetitive exposures to sub-threshold levels of ciguatera toxins may cause irreversible sub-clinical damage, and eventually cause more severe illness. Our previous study has shown that an acute single dose of Pacific ciguatoxin-1 (P-CTX-1) induced synaptic facilitation and blockage of the induction of electrical stimulation-induced long-term potentiation
