PCV2 is globally spread pathogen involved in a number of diseases (PCVD). Commonly used vaccines against PCV2 are proved to be highly efficacious. The role of recently discovered PCV3 for pig health and interference with PCV2 remains unknown. The study performed on serum samples from seven farms vaccinated against PCV2 and four non-vaccinated showed very low prevalence of PCV2 viremia in the former (3 out of 106 positive serum pools) and high prevalence of PCV2 viremia in the latter (35 out of 60 positive pools). Mean log10 PCV2 genome equivalents were lower in vaccinated farms (4.8 ± 0.6 log1

In pigs, three circovirus species within the genus Circovirus have been identified so far, including the non-pathogenic Porcine circovirus 1 (PCV1), the pathogenic Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) and the recently identified Porcine circovirus 3 (PCV3). In April 2019, a new circovirus with a distinct relationship to other circoviruses was identified in several pigs with severe clinical disease in Hunan province, China. The size of the viral genome, tentatively designated as porcine circovirus type 4 (PCV4), is 1,770 nucleotides (nt). PCV4 shows the highest genomic identity to mink circovirus (66.9%

Infections with goose circovirus (GoCV) are associated with growth retardation and developmental problems in farmed geese. An indirect immunofluorescence assay for detecting virus-specific serum antibody was developed for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes. In the absence of a method for growing GoCV in cell culture, the assay was based on the reaction of antibodies with the GoCV capsid protein produced within baby hamster kidney cells using the eukaryotic Semliki forest virus expression vector. Using an optimized test that involved screening sera at 1:50 dilution and the use of a fluores

We characterized the complete genome of a novel dog circovirus (DogCV) from the liver of a dog with severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, vasculitis, and granulomatous lymphadenitis. DogCV was detected by PCR in fecal samples from 19/168 (11.3%) dogs with diarrhea and 14/204 (6.9%) healthy dogs and in blood from 19/409 (3.3%) of dogs with thrombocytopenia and neutropenia, fever of unknown origin, or past tick bite. Co-infection with other canine pathogens was detected for 13/19 (68%) DogCV-positive dogs with diarrhea. DogCV capsid proteins from different dogs varied by up to 8%. In situ hybridiz

With the global prevalence of pigeon racing, pigeon infections with Pigeon circovirus (PiCV) have been reported across the world. PiCV-infected pigeons are susceptible to subsequent infections and exhibit a range of symptoms including weight loss, lethargy, anorexia, respiratory distress and diarrhea, which exerts a huge impact on the pigeon industry. However, there is currently a lack of epidemiological data on PiCV infection in pigeons. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence, genetic variations, and evolutionary dynamics of PiCV within pi

This report describes the diagnosis of porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2)-associated enteritis in 6 weaned pigs without postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome by histopathology, virus isolation, and in situ hybridization. The most unique lesions were granulomatous inflammation affecting Peyer's patches, characterized by infiltrates of epithelioid macrophages and giant multinucleated cells. Large, multiple, basophilic or amphophilic, grape-like intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were often seen in the cytoplasm of histiocytic cells and giant multinucleated cells. No microscopic lesions were observe

The capsid protein is the major immunogenic protein of porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2). The nucleotide sequence of porcine circovirus-like virus P1 shares high homology with open reading frame (ORF) 2 of PCV2, and ORF1 of P1 encodes its structural protein. Mice were vaccinated twice intramuscularly with a plasmid expressing the P1 ORF1 protein (pcDNA3.1(+)-ORF1) at 2-week intervals. All animals vaccinated with pcDNA3.1(+)-ORF1 developed higher specific anti-P1 antibody levels, and had less PCV2 viremia and milder histopathological changes than PCV2-challenged mice in the control group. Our results

Circovirus human is a new viral species that includes the human circovirus (HCirV), which has been linked to hepatitis in immunocompromised persons. We investigated prevalence of HCirV infection in 278 patients with hepatitis and 184 asymptomatic persons using real-time PCR and sequencing assays. HCirV viremia and sequences were found in 8 (2.9%) hepatitis patients and no asymptomatic patients. Alternate causes of hepatitis (hepatitis E and cholangitis) were clearly identifiable in 2 HCirV-infected patients. HCirV could not be ruled out as a contributor to hepatitis in the remaining 6 patients

Clinical observations and diagnostic procedures carried out to elucidate the cause of high mortality in 2-8-wk-old ornamental ducks (mandarin, wood, falcated, and silver teal ducks) are described. At necropsy, ducklings showed general pallor of skeletal and heart muscles, subcutaneous gelatinous transudates, pericarditis, ascites, and severe edema and hyperemia of lungs. Histopathologic examination revealed that the most important changes were located in the crop, bursa of Fabricius, and lungs with presence of amorphic basic intracytoplasmic inclusions. No bacteria or fungi could be detected f

DNA from porcine circovirus type 1 (PCV1) and 2 (PCV2) has recently been detected in two vaccines against rotaviral gastroenteritis from manufacturers A and B. We investigated if PCV1 sequences are present in other viral vaccines. We screened seeds, bulks and final vaccine preparations from ten manufacturers using qRT-PCR. We detected 3.8 × 10³ to 1.9 × 10⁷ PCV1 DNA copies/milliliter in live poliovirus seeds for inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) from manufacturer A, however, following inactivation and purification, the finished IPV was PCV1-negative. PCV1 DNA was not detectable in live polio pre

Porcine circovirus-2 (PCV-2) is the necessary cause of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in swine; however, a variety of co-factors, including other infectious agents, are thought to be necessary in the full expression of disease. Porcine parvovirus (PPV) was found in the inoculum used in the first experiments to reproduce PMWS in gnotobiotic swine. Retrospective and prospective studies in the field and laboratory have demonstrated PCV-2 can act synergistically with PPV to enhance the severity of PMWS. PCV-2 has been shown to play a role in the porcine infectious disease compl

PCV-3 and PCV-4 are novel viruses that can infect domestic pigs and wild boars. Both viruses are associated with multiple disorders in domestic pigs (reproductive failure, respiratory damage, etc.). However, the clinical impact on wild boars remains unknown. This study aimed to assess the presence of these viruses in wild boars from mid-western Spain and their sanitary impact on the species. A total of 166 submandibular lymph nodes were collected from hunted wild boars, along with available information about their reproductive status, lung injuries, body condition, and tuberculosis status. Waterfowl circovirus (WFCV) is an important member of the genus Circovirus within the family Circoviridae, encompassing duck circovirus (DuCV) and goose circovirus (GoCV). As a pathogen that poses a serious threat to the global waterfowl industry, WFCV induces significant immunosuppression in its hosts, leading to growth retardation, feather abnormalities, and increased susceptibility to other pathogens. Consequently, it results in markedly elevated mortality rates among affected birds and causes substantial economic losses. In recent years, with the advancement of molecular biology techniques

In March 2022, a 61-year-old woman in France who had received a heart-lung transplant sought treatment with chronic hepatitis mainly characterized by increased liver enzymes. After ruling out common etiologies, we used metagenomic next-generation sequencing to analyze a liver biopsy sample and identified an unknown species of circovirus, tentatively named human circovirus 1 (HCirV-1). We found no other viral or bacterial sequences. HCirV-1 shared 70% amino acid identity with the closest known viral sequences. The viral genome was undetectable in blood samples from 2017-2019, then became detect

This article investigates the causes of the sudden death of six common ravens (Corvus corax). All six birds were found on the same day in central Poland. The ravens were necropsied, and samples were collected for bacteriological, histopathological, and toxicological examinations. The presence of genetic material from common viral and some bacterial pathogens was examined using molecular methods. The ravens were found to be in good nutritional condition. Two birds had enlarged spleens with petechiae on their surface. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal hemorrhages and inflammatory

INTRODUCTION: Coinfection of goose parvovirus (GPV) and duck circovirus (DuCV) occurs commonly in field cases of short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS). However, whether there is synergism between the two viruses in replication and pathogenicity remains undetermined.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We established a coinfection model of GPV and DuCV in Cherry Valley ducks. Tissue samples were examined histopathologically. The viral loads in tissues were detected by qPCR, and the distribution of the virus in tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC).
RESULTS: Coinfection of GPV and DuCV signif
