Cissampelos sympodialis Eichler is well studied and investigated for its antiasthmatic properties, but there are no data in the literature describing antibacterial properties of alkaloids isolated from this botanical species. This work reports the isolation and characterization of phanostenine obtained from roots of C. sympodialis and describes for the first time its antimicrobial and antibiotic modulatory properties. Phanostenine was first isolated from Cissampelos sympodialis and its antibacterial activities were determined. Chemical structures of the alkaloid isolate were determined using s

Development of new agents capable of regulating eosinophilic inflammation can uncover novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of allergic diseases, such as asthma. Here, we evaluated the anti-allergic properties of an extract of the Brazilian Menispermaceae Cissampelos sympodialis, focusing on its effects on allergic eosinophilia. By studying two models of allergic inflammation, an asthma model and the allergic pleurisy in actively sensitized Balb/c mice, we observed that the oral pre-treatment with C. sympodialis reduced pleural eosinophil influx triggered by allergen challenge in a do

The ethanolic root extract of Cissampelos mucronata was investigated for sedative activity. Phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of alkaloids: sterols/triterpenes, tannins, carbohydrates, glycosides, and flavonoids. Acute lethality test gave an LD50 of 282.84 mg/kg. The study of the effect of the extract on the behavioural pattern of mice showed changes indicative of central nervous system depression. The results further revealed that the extract progressively reduced ephedrine-induced spontaneous motor activity in rats, and prolonged pentobarbitone-sleeping time in mice. Pre-treatmen

Leishmania (L.) chagasi is the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis, an important endemic zoonosis in the American continent, as well as in many other countries in Asia, Africa, and Mediterranean Europe. The treatment is difficult due to the high toxicity of the available drugs, high costs, and emergence of resistance in the parasites. Therefore, there is an urgent need for new leishmanicidal agents. The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids have been related to antibacterial, antiprotozoal, and antifungal activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth inhibitory activity of war

Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl. (Menispermaceae) root infusion is used in Northeast Brazil to treat allergic asthma. We have previously shown that oral use of the plant extract reduces eosinophil infiltration into the lung of ovalbumin (OVA)- sensitized mice. However, drugs taken by inhalation route to treat asthma achieve better outcomes. Thereby, in this study, we evaluated the inhaled C. sympodialis alcoholic extract as a therapeutic treatment in OVA-sensitized BALB/c mice. The parameters which were analyzed consisted of leukocyte recruitment to the airway cavity, tissue remodeling and cell

Nine undescribed polyhydroxylated oleanane triterpenoids (cissatriterpenoids D-L, 1-9) were isolated from the roots of Cissampelos pareira var. hirsuta. Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis (HR-ESI-MS, UV, IR, NMR), and compared with the spectral data reported in the literature. All the compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against MGC-803 and B16F10 cell lines, and inhibitory activity against nitric oxide (NO) release in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Among the tested compounds, compound 3 demonstrated the most potent cytotoxici

BACKGROUND: Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral disease, poses a significant global public health risk. In tropical countries such as India where periodic dengue outbreaks can be correlated to the high prevalence of the mosquito vector, circulation of all four dengue viruses (DENVs) and the high population density, a drug for dengue is being increasingly recognized as an unmet public health need.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using the knowledge of traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda, we developed a systematic bioassay-guided screening approach to explore the indigenous herbal bio-resource to
