Citrobacter koseri folliculitis of the face.

We report a case of severe Citrobacter koseri folliculitis of the face in a boy with acne. A 15-year-old boy affected by acne was admitted because of a rash located on the face. Dermatological examination revealed two large plaques, with numerous pustules, eschars and crusts, located bilaterally and symmetrically on the cheeks. Three bacteriological examinations were positive for C. koseri. The patient was successfully treated with i.m. ceftriaxone. C. koseri is a Gram-negative, aerobic, mobile, nonsporulating bacillus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. It can cause meningitis, centra

Citrobacter koseri, an unusual exogenous endoftalmitis.

Citrobacter koseri is a bacillus that causes infrequent endophthalmitis. 6% of cultures in endophthalmitis are Gram -, and as in these, C. koseri is associated with a poor visual prognosis. We present a 65-year-old man who works in an animal laboratory. He went to emergencies with loss of vision in his left eye due to a vitreous hemorrhage. A vitrectomy was performed and 3 days later, endophthalmitis was diagnosed. Vancomycin and Ceftazidime were applied in eye drops and in two intravitreal injections. 24 h later he returned with a lens extrusion. Due to the severity of the condition, an evisc

Musculoskeletal infections associated with Citrobacter koseri.

Introduction Citrobacter koseri is a well known cause of central nervous system infections in the paediatric setting. Musculoskeletal infections caused by C koseri are rare, with only 14 previously reported cases. We present the first recorded case of C koseri induced septic arthritis of the knee along with a review of the literature. Methods A search of the PubMed, Embase(®) and Google Scholar™ databases was undertaken. Only complete or near complete cases were reviewed. Findings Fourteen musculoskeletal infections were identified. Of these, five were associated with an operative procedure an

Optimum management of Citrobacter koseri infection.

Low virulent Citrobacter koseri can cause life threatening infections. Neonates and other immunocompromised patients are particularly susceptible to infection from C. koseri. Any infection due to C. koseri mandates antimicrobial therapy based on the sensitivity of the pathogen microorganism. Various types of antibiotics, including aminoglycosides carbapenems, cephalosporins, chloramphenicol and quinolones, are used for the treatment of C. koseri infections. The rational choice of antimicrobial therapy for Citrobacter infections is a challenge for clinicians because there is a sustained increas

Spondylodiscitis caused by Citrobacter koseri: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Citrobacter species are ubiquitous environmental gram-negative bacilli that rarely cause severe infections in immunocompetent adults. Spondylodiscitis caused by Citrobacter koseri is an exceptionally rare clinical entity, with fewer than 15 cases reported in the literature. We report a case of community-acquired Citrobacter koseri spondylodiscitis to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic management of this unusual pathogen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old Tunisian woman presented with acute inflammatory dorsal back pain and fever. Laboratory evaluation revealed elevated inflam

Peritumoral Citrobacter koseri abscess associated with parasagittal meningioma.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: This is the second report of a Citrobacter-associated brain abscess in an adult and the first report of its association with an intradural tumor. Excluding those associated with trauma, neurosurgical procedures, and proximity to the skull base, only seven other cases of abscesses associated with intracranial tumors have been published. Five of seven tumor-associated abscesses with a microbiological diagnosis involved gram-negative bacteria, a finding that may indicate a predilection of these microorganisms for intracranial tumors. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old

Comparative Genomic Analysis of Citrobacter and Key Genes Essential for the Pathogenicity of Citrobacter koseri.

Citrobacter species are opportunistic bacterial pathogens that have been implicated in both nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Among the genus Citrobacter, Citrobacter koseri is often isolated from clinical material, and has been known to cause meningitis and brain abscess in neonates and immunocompromised individuals. The virulence determinants of Citrobacter, however, remain largely unknown. Based on traditional methods, the genus Citrobacter has been divided into 11 species, but this has been problematic. Here, we determined an improved, detailed, and more accurate phylogeny of t

Peripheral ulcerative keratitis secondary to chronic Citrobacter koseri canaliculitis.

Citrobacter koseri is a rarely reported ocular pathogen. It may induce severe peripheral corneal inflammation and subsequent perforation by canaliculitis. Timely detection of the reservoir of this pathogen would halt its progression. The purpose of this study was to report a rare presentation of C. koseri chronic canaliculitis complicated with perforating peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK). A 71-year-old female who had several episodes of C. koseri conjunctivitis in the past 6 months was admitted to our infection ward under the impression of fever that was suspected to be related to urinary

Citrobacter koseri: an unusual cause of pyogenic liver abscess.

Liver abscess is a common pathology in the Indian subcontinent and usually results from amoebic or bacterial infection. Pyogenic abscesses usually occur in those with underlying predisposing factors like intra-abdominal infections, biliary infections or comorbidities like malignancy, immunosuppression, diabetes mellitus and previous biliary surgery or interventional endoscopy. Citrobacter is an unusual cause of pyogenic liver abscess and may occur in the setting of underlying comorbidities. We report a 56-year-old man with diabetes (operated for periampullary carcinoma 20 years ago), who prese

Citrobacter koseri Endophthalmitis Following Intravitreal Fluocinolone Acetonide Implant Injection.

Citrobacter koseri is a gram-negative bacillus primarily found in the gut. Exogenous endophthalmitis caused by C. koseri is exceedingly rare, with most reported cases occurring secondary to ocular trauma and resulting in poor visual outcomes. This report presents a case of a 76-year-old patient who developed endophthalmitis following a fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal injection administered for diabetic macular edema. A vitreous biopsy and intravitreal injection of vancomycin and ceftazidime were performed upon presentation. The vitreous sample culture was positive for C. koseri. The patien

Citrobacter koseri related abortion and fetal septicemia in cattle.

A 31-month-old Holstein dairy cow aborted at 224 days of gestation with ejection of cheese-like lochia. Citrobacter koseri, which commonly exists in the normal flora of human and animal digestive tracts, was isolated from aborted fetal tissues (liver, spleen, kidney, heart, lung, cerebrum, and skeletal muscle) and fetal membranes. Histopathological examination revealed suppurative fibrinous meningoencephalitis of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem; suppurative bronchopneumonia; suppurative chorioamnionitis; and fibrous splenic serositis. Sepsis, meningitis and cerebral abscesses caused by Citrobacter koseri.

After a 36-week diamniotic dichorionic gestation, an infant was delivered by elective caesarean section due to growth restriction and altered diastolic flow in the umbilical artery. Birth weight was 2140 g. The patient was admitted for exclusive parenteral nutrition, with umbilical venous catheter placement. Sinus tachycardia and temperature instability with positive inflammatory markers occurred at 51 h. Penicillin and gentamicin were started, but 6 h later septic shock with disseminated intravascular coagulation was noted. Vancomycin and meropenem were started and penicillin suspended. Citro

Osteomyelitis Caused by Citrobacter koseri in a Young Immunocompetent Man.

Citrobacter koseri is a non-sporulating, motile, gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacteria found in various environmental sources, including the human intestine. It is considered an opportunistic infection as it typically causes infection in newborns, elderly, and immunocompromised patients. Common sites of infection are the urinary tract, gastrointestinal system, and respiratory tract in immunocompromised adults, as well as the bloodstream and meninges in newborns. However, osteomyelitis secondary to C. koseri is very rare. We present an unusual case of Citrobacter osteomyelitis in a heal

A case of Citrobacter koseri renal abscess and review of the literature.

Citrobacter species are anaerobic gram-negative bacteria that are known to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts, particularly in hospital settings. Their opportunistic nature and tendency to develop antibiotic resistance make Citrobacter species challenging to treat. Renal or perinephric abscess formation as a result of Citrobacter infection is uncommon, having only previously been reported in four cases. We present a case of a 70-year-old man with diabetes and prostate cancer who was diagnosed with an 18 cm perinephric and a 10 cm perihepatic abscess caused by Citrobacter koseri. The p
