Classification algorithms applied to narrative reports.

Narrative text reports represent a significant source of clinical data. However, the information stored in these reports is inaccessible to many automated decision support systems. Data mining techniques can assist in extracting information from narrative data. Multiple classification methods, such as rule generation, decision trees, Bayesian classifiers, and information retrieval were used to classify a set of 200 chest X-ray reports according to 6 clinical conditions indicated. A general-purpose natural language processor was used to convert the narrative text into a coded form that could be

Vascular anomalies: nomenclature, classification, and imaging algorithms.

There is a lot of ambiguity in the usage of correct terminology in the description of vascular malformations and tumors. Hemangioma and arteriovenous malformation (AVM) are the most commonly used terms and are the mostly incorrectly used as well! The aim of this review article was to lay out the correct nomenclature and describe the correct usage for the physicians and radiologists involved in diagnosing and managing these lesions. We describe the various classification systems which have been devised to define the multiple entities included under vascular anomalies. The latest classification

Classification, Categorization, and Algorithms for Articular Cartilage Defects.

There is a critical unmet need in the clinical implementation of valid preventative and therapeutic strategies for patients with articular cartilage pathology based on the significant gap in understanding of the relationships between diagnostic data, disease progression, patient-related variables, and symptoms. In this article, the current state of classification and categorization for articular cartilage pathology is discussed with particular focus on machine learning methods and the authors propose a bedside-bench-bedside approach with highly quantitative techniques as a solution to these hu

Systematic classification differences across eye movement detection algorithms.

Eye movement (EM) detection is a critical step in most eye-tracking (ET) research, typically relying on detectors-specialized algorithms designed to segment raw ET data into discrete oculomotor events. However, variability in detection algorithms and the lack of standardized evaluation frameworks hinder transparency and reproducibility across studies. In this work, we introduce pEYES, an open-source toolkit designed to streamline EM detection and enable robust, quantitative comparisons between detectors. The toolkit provides implementations for several widely used threshold-based detectors, al

Temporal robustness of biomarker-based classification algorithms for sepsis.

PURPOSE: Heterogeneity of the host response in sepsis hampers development of effective treatments. Several immunobiologically distinct subphenotypes (or endotypes) have been identified using data-driven analyses of single-timepoint biomarker data, but their temporal stability remains uncertain due to dynamic biology and statistical limitations. METHODS: We analyzed data from 345 sepsis patients across two ICU cohorts. 30 immune biomarkers were measured every 8 h for up to 7 days. Latent profile analysis was used to identify classes upon admission and re-classify patients at later timepoints.

Classification algorithms for predicting sleepiness and sleep apnea severity.

Identifying predictors of subjective sleepiness and severity of sleep apnea are important yet challenging goals in sleep medicine. Classification algorithms may provide insights, especially when large data sets are available. We analyzed polysomnography and clinical features available from the Sleep Heart Health Study. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the apnea-hypopnea index were the targets of three classifiers: k-nearest neighbor, naive Bayes and support vector machine algorithms. Classification was based on up to 26 features including demographics, polysomnogram, and electrocardiogram (spe

Near-Term Quantum Classification Algorithms Applied to Antimalarial Drug Discovery.

Computational approaches are widely applied in drug discovery to explore properties related to bioactivity, physiochemistry, and toxicology. Over at least the last 20 years, the exploitation of machine learning on molecular data sets has been used to understand the structure-activity relationships that exist between biomolecules and druggable targets. More recently, these methods have also seen application for phenotypic screening data for neglected diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. Herein, we apply machine learning to build quantum Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship models

Keratoconus Severity Classification Using Features Selection and Machine Learning Algorithms.

Keratoconus is a noninflammatory disease characterized by thinning and bulging of the cornea, generally appearing during adolescence and slowly progressing, causing vision impairment. However, the detection of keratoconus remains difficult in the early stages of the disease because the patient does not feel any pain. Therefore, the development of a method for detecting this disease based on machine and deep learning methods is necessary for early detection in order to provide the appropriate treatment as early as possible to patients. Thus, the objective of this work is to determine the most r

Deep neural network-based classification of cardiotocograms outperformed conventional algorithms.

Cardiotocography records fetal heart rates and their temporal relationship to uterine contractions. To identify high risk fetuses, obstetricians inspect cardiotocograms (CTGs) by eye. Therefore, CTG traces are often interpreted differently among obstetricians, resulting in inappropriate interventions. However, few studies have focused on quantitative and nonbiased algorithms for CTG evaluation. In this study, we propose a newly constructed deep neural network model (CTG-net) to detect compromised fetal status. CTG-net consists of three convolutional layers that extract temporal patterns and in

Craniovertebral junction database analysis: incidence, classification, presentation, and treatment algorithms.

INTRODUCTION: The initial treatment of bony lesions at the craniocervical junction consisted of posterior decompression with enlargement of the foramen and removal of the posterior arch of the atlas and axis vertebra. This was regardless of the site of compression. Needless to say, the results were poor when an irreducible ventral lesion at the craniocervical junction caused compression of the cervicomedullary area. It was predictable that an adverse outcome would occur in approximately 35-40% of patients treated with dorsal decompression with a fixed anterior abnormality at the craniovertebra

Classification Algorithms for Early Tooth Demineralization Assessment by Impedance Spectroscopy.

Oral caries is one of the most common oral diseases worldwide, affecting about 2.4 billion people. This phenomenon always starts with enamel demineralization, eventually progressing to tooth cavitation and loss when not properly treated. Nowadays, the standard diagnostic techniques to detect demineralization strongly depend on the operator's expertise and are characterized by fairly low sensitivity and specificity, and/or involve ionizing radiation. This study investigates the feasibility of a non-invasive, effective, rapid, and radiation-free approach employing impedance spectroscopy for earl

Autism Data Classification Using AI Algorithms with Rules: Focused Review.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents challenges in early screening due to its varied nature and sophisticated early signs. From a machine-learning (ML) perspective, the primary challenges include the need for large, diverse datasets, managing the variability in ASD symptoms, providing easy-to-understand models, and ensuring ASD predictive models that can be employed across different populations. Interpretable or explainable classification algorithms, like rule-based or decision tree, play a crucial role in dealing with some of these issues by offering classification models that can be explo

Multilabel Classification Methods for Human Activity Recognition: A Comparison of Algorithms.

As the world's population is aging, and since access to ambient sensors has become easier over the past years, activity recognition in smart home installations has gained increased scientific interest. The majority of published papers in the literature focus on single-resident activity recognition. While this is an important area, especially when focusing on elderly people living alone, multi-resident activity recognition has potentially more applications in smart homes. Activity recognition for multiple residents acting concurrently can be treated as a multilabel classification problem (MLC).

Validation of classification algorithms for childhood diabetes identified from administrative data.

OBJECTIVE: Type 1 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes among children; however, the proportion of cases of childhood type 2 diabetes is increasing. In Canada, the National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS) uses administrative health data to describe trends in the epidemiology of diabetes, but does not specify diabetes type. The objective of this study was to validate algorithms to classify diabetes type in children <20 yr identified using the NDSS methodology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We applied the NDSS case definition to children living in British Columbia between 1 April 1996 and 31

Classification of Cancer Tissue With Machine Learning Algorithms Using Microwave Datasets.

The global incidence of cancer-related diseases and mortality continues to rise, making early and accurate diagnosis crucial for effective treatment. A key step in cancer treatment is the identification and removal of tumorous tissue, which is subsequently analyzed through pathological examinations. However, traditional pathology reports can take several weeks or even months to be processed. To expedite diagnosis, this study employs microwave measurement techniques to distinguish between healthy and cancerous colon tissue samples. The free-space measurement method is selected due to its suitab

Analysis-Synthesis Learning With Shared Features: Algorithms for Histology Image Classification.

OBJECTIVE: The diversity of tissue structure in histopathological images makes feature extraction for classification a challenging task. Dictionary learning within a sparse representation-based classification (SRC) framework has been shown to be successful for feature discovery. However, there exist stiff practical challenges: 1) computational complexity of SRC can be onerous in the decision stage since it involves solving a sparsity constrained optimization problem and often over a large number of image patches; and 2) images from distinct classes continue to share several geometric features.
