The effect of ethanol extract from aerial parts of Cleome droserifolia was investigated against carbon tetrachloride induced liver injury. The hepatoprotective activity was evaluated through the quantification of biochemical parameters and confirmed using histopathology analysis. Efficient hepatoprotective effect was achieved by crude extract, fractions and some pure compounds. The phytochemical studies showed that the petroleum ether fraction afforded two known guaiane sesquiterpenes buchariol (1) and teucladiol (2) in addition to daucosterol (beta-sitosterol glucoside) (3). The CHCl(3) fract

Catechyl (C) lignin, a linear homopolymer restricted to seed coats of a limited number of plant species, has favorable properties for chemical and biomaterial manufacture. In the seed coat of Cleome hassleriana, lignin composition switches from guaiacyl (G-) lignin to C-lignin during development. This involves loss of expression of caffeoyl-CoA 3-O-methyltransferase (ChCCoAOMT) and caffeic acid 3-O-methyltransferase (ChCOMT), and upregulation of a cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (ChCAD5) and laccase (ChLAC8) with substrate preference for the caffeyl moiety. How the loss of monolignol O-methylat

Methanolic extracts obtained from different organs of Cleome rosea, collected from its natural habitat and from in vitro-propagated plants, were submitted to in vitro biological assays. Inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production by J774 macrophages and antioxidant effects by protecting the plasmid DNA from the SnCl(2)-induced damage were evaluated. Extracts from the stem of both origins and leaf of natural plants inhibited NO production. The plasmid DNA strand breaks induced by SnCl(2) were reduced by extracts from either leaf or stem of both sources. On the other hand, root extracts did not s

Due to the use of Cleome spinosa Jacq. (Cleomaceae) in traditional medicine against inflammatory and infectious processes, this study evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial potential and phytochemical composition of extracts from its roots and leaves. From leaves (L) and roots (R) of C. spinosa different extracts were obtained (cyclohexane: ChL and ChR; chloroform: CL and CR; ethyl acetate: EAL and EAR, methanol: ML and MR). The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the broth microdilution method to obtain the minimum inhibitory (MIC) and microbicidal (MMC) concentrations against 17 species, i

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, however, there is currently no drug-based treatment. Plants that exhibit antioxidant properties have shown promising anticataract effects, likely because they supplement the activity of glutathione, the major antioxidant in lens cells. An extract of Cleome rupicola, a desert plant found in the United Arab Emirates, has traditionally been used to treat cataracts. Phytochemical screening of the aqueous extract established the presence of flavonoids, tannins, steroid derivatives, and reducing sugars. Fractioning of extracts from the fruits u

Fasciolosis is considered as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among ruminants in the Philippines. Though anthelmintic drugs are widely used to treat and control the condition, it is still worthwhile to search for alternative treatments especially when resistance to commonly used anthelmintic drugs has been reported. In this study, the ethanolic leaf extract of fringed spiderflower (Cleome rutidosperma) was evaluated for its in vitro anthelmintic activity against Fasciola spp. Specifically, the study compared the different concentrations of ethanolic leaf extract and the com
