Closed reduction of lumbosacral fracture dislocations.

A unique method for closed reduction of lumbosacral fracture dislocations that uses a circle-electric bed is described. Fine radiological description of the injury with computed tomography scanning allows the application of appropriate forces to facilitate the reduction, while having the patient awake during the procedure greatly reduces the chance of introducing further neurological deficit.

Postoperative Changes After Closed Reduction of Nasal Fracture.

Nasal bone fracture is the most common facial fracture; however, surgery does not guarantee reduction and complications, such as undercorrection, overcorrection, and deviation, may occur. By analyzing findings of computed tomography (CT) immediately and at 3 months postoperatively, we evaluated the accuracy of reduction and long-term changes to the nasal bone.Patients with pure nasal bone fracture were evaluated from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011. First, we categorized fracture types according to the Stranc-Robertson classification system, using preoperative CT findings (ie, F1, F2, L1,

Nasal fractures: is closed reduction satisfying?

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of closed reduction and the effects of timing and fracture types on patient satisfaction. METHODS: Only patients with isolated nasal fractures were included in the study. Patients with additional maxillofacial fractures and patients whose application time to our clinic was more than 10 days after the trauma were excluded. Patients were classified into 5 types according to their fracture. All patients underwent closed reduction and external fixation under local anesthesia. Patients were asked about their satisfaction in a survey at 28th day a

Closed reduction of coronal fractures of the capitellum.

Closed reductions of displaced coronal fractures of the capitellum were successfully obtained for nine patients. The method involves spontaneous reduction by allowing the elbow to fully extend under anesthesia and then gradually flexing the elbow while distracting the elbow joint. Distraction allows the radial head to capture the capitellar fragment in the joint rather than push it proximally. The elbow is immobilized at 90 degrees for 3 weeks. Gentle active motion is then started. Closed reduction is often or usually obtained, but open reduction and internal fixation are performed in those ca

Ankle arthroscopy-assisted closed reduction in Bosworth fracture dislocation.

The Bosworth fracture dislocation is a rare type of ankle fracture and is usually unrecognized on initial radiographs, therefore early open reduction is recommended. This study reports a 51-year-old female with uncommon imaging and clinical features. Preoperative X-ray, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the ankle showed posterior detached dislocation of the intact distal fibula, the loose osteochondral fragments located in the tibiotalar joint, and the rupture of the deltoid ligament. Due to the initial infected wound on the severely swollen ankle, delayed arthroscopy-assi

Early reexploration after closed reduction of nasal bone fracture.

The aim of this study was to analyze the cases that were reexplored shortly after closed reduction of the nasal bone fracture. From 1996 to 2009, 955 patients (757 males and 198 females) were operated on for the nasal bone fractures. The nasal splints were applied and removed 1 week postoperatively, and the results of nasal reduction were reviewed. Indications for reexploration were undercorrection or deviation of the reduced nasal bone.Of the 955 patients, 13 (11 males and 2 females; 1.36%) were reexplored. The recorrection was done 7.78 +/- 4.77 days after the initial surgery. Mostly local a

Supracondylar fracture of the femur: closed or open reduction?

Fifty-one cases of supracondylar fracture of the femur with a mean follow-up of 29 months were retrospectively studied. Thirty-one fractures were open; most had major soft tissue damage. Open management was used for 32 of the fractures with good to excellent results in 81%, while a good or excellent outcome was attained in only 42% of the 19 fractures treated nonsurgically. Malunion was observed in seven cases treated by closed methods and in only one case treated by open reduction. The patients treated surgically also had shorter average hospital stays and a better range of motion in the knee

Closed Reduction of Ping-Pong Fracture in a Neonate.

Ping-pong fracture in neonates is a well-known complication. There have been many reports on methods to achieve closed reduction using a suction technique. Here we describe in detail the steps for such a maneuver and show the favorable cosmetic outcome without the need for surgery. At the start of the video, the technique for closed reduction of ping-pong fracture in neonates is presented in detail. The present child was born full term through a normal delivery without complications. After delivery, a ping-pong fracture was noticed in the left fronto-temporo-parietal region (see Video 1). The

Initial closed reduction of cervical spine fracture-dislocation injuries.

STANDARDS: There is insufficient evidence to support treatment standards. GUIDELINES: There is insufficient evidence to support treatment guidelines. Early closed reduction of cervical spine fracture-dislocation injuries with craniocervical traction is recommended to restore anatomic alignment of the cervical spine in awake patients. Closed reduction in patients with an additional rostral injury is not recommended. Patients with cervical spine fracture-dislocation injuries who cannot be examined during attempted closed reduction, or before open posterior reduction, should undergo magnetic res

Rolando's fracture treated by closed reduction and external fixation.

In 11 patients with a Rolando's fracture of the first metacarpal, the mini-Hoffman external fixation was used to maintain closed reduction of the fracture, with two pins placed distally in the first metacarpal and one pin proximally in the trapezium. The results were excellent in 7 patients; in 3 patients mild arthritis was noted radiographically, and one patient had a poor result because of severe postraumatic arthritis 1-5 years (mean 30 months) after the injury. This method of treatment is proposed for patients with Rolando's fracture as it is very easily performed and provides good results

Chopart joint fracture-dislocation: initial open reduction provides better outcome than closed reduction.

Injury cause, treatment, and long-term results [American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Midfoot Score, Hannover Scoring System, Hannover Outcome Questionnaire] of patients with Chopart joint dislocations or fracture-dislocations were evaluated. Between 1972 and 1997, 100 patients with 110 Chopart joint dislocations were treated in the authors' institution. Pure Chopart joint dislocations were observed in 28 (25%) feet, fracture-dislocations in 60 (55%) feet, and combined Chopart-Lisfranc joint fracture-dislocations in 22 (20%) feet. The primary treatment was operative in 91 (83%) f

Convex bone deformity after closed reduction of nasal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: Nasal fracture is the most common type of facial fracture treated by plastic surgeons. Here, we clarify the postoperative deformities that frequently remain after closed reduction of fresh nasal bone fracture by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT). METHODS: Hundred consecutive cases of fresh nasal bone fracture in patients treated between May 2010 and January 2016 were examined. After closed reduction, the overall appearance of the arch formed by the nasal bone and maxillary process was evaluated as 'Excellent', 'Good' or 'Fair'. Patients were also asked about their over

Iatrogenic radial neck fracture on closed reduction of elbow dislocation.

Traumatic dislocation of the elbow is rare in children and can most often be managed in the emergency department using procedural sedation and closed reduction with good functional outcome. Radiographs must be evaluated for associated avulsions and fractures around the elbow. We present the case of a 14-year-old girl who sustained a fracture of the radial neck subsequent to repeated attempts at closed reduction of a pure posterior elbow dislocation that was missed on postreduction radiographs. Careful use of reduction techniques and avoidance of repeated forceful manipulations is emphasized.

Closed treatment of frontal sinus fracture with percutaneous screw reduction.

Fractures of the frontal sinus are a relatively common injury presenting to trauma units that deal with craniofacial injuries. Approximately one third of frontal sinus fractures affect the anterior wall alone, with two thirds involving the anterior wall, posterior wall, or frontonasal duct. Isolated posterior wall defects are exceedingly rare. Frontal sinus fracture management is still controversial and involves preserving function when feasible or obliterating the sinus and duct, depending on the fracture pattern. In the standard treatment modality of frontal sinus fractures, repair is best p

Impacted tooth in mandibular fracture line: treatment with closed reduction.

PURPOSE: Most mandibular fractures occur because of blunt trauma. In some cases, the mandible can be weakened by the presence of an unerupted or impacted tooth. The fate of this tooth in the fracture line and its effects on bone healing remain an important outcome event. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the records of 117 patients with a total of 121 fractures having an unerupted tooth remaining in the fracture line who were treated and followed by the Dental Faculty of Ankara University between 1986 and 1996. All were open fractures, and none of the patients had a history of

Comparison of ultrasonography-assisted closed reduction with conventional closed reduction for the treatment of acute nasal fractures.

Ultrasonography has often been reported to be a useful tool in cases of nasal fracture, not only for diagnosing such fractures but also for intraoperatively assessing surgical outcomes. In this study, we examined the utility of ultrasonography for intraoperatively assessing the results of surgery for acute nasal fractures. In the conventional group, the outcome of each fracture reduction procedure was intraoperatively confirmed by visual inspection and palpation. In the ultrasound group, intraoperative ultrasonography was used to assess the condition of the fracture before and after closed red
