Microplastics (MPs) released from aquaculture infrastructure represent a growing source of pollution in coastal environments, yet their fate in the presence of periphytic diatoms remains underexplored. This study investigates how the periphytic diatom Cylindrotheca closterium interacts with polyethylene (PE) MPs of two size classes (10-20 μm and 100-200 μm) under controlled laboratory conditions. Using 36-day time-series experiments, we examined cell attachment, aggregate formation, and sinking dynamics. C. closterium rapidly reached high biomass (>1.50 × 106 cells mL-1) and formed visible agg

Allelopathy between algae is an ecological strategy that can facilitate or inhibit the occurrence of algal blooms. The role of allelopathic effects of marine microalgae Cylindrotheca closterium in other phytoplankton population dynamics are still limited. In the current study, the effects of cell-free filtrates of diatom Cylindrotheca closterium on two common dinoflagellates (Prorocentrum donghaiense and Prorocentrum cordatum), a chrysophyceae (Isochrysis galbana) and a diatom (Chaetoceros curvisetus) were investigated within controlled laboratory experiments. It was observed that the growth o

A laboratory study was performed on the extracellular production of carbohydrates by the marine diatoms Cylindrotheca closterium, Thalassiosira pseudonana and Skeletonema costatum. The investigation was aimed at elucidating the role of P-starvation and growth status on abundance and chemical characteristics of the released non-attached polysaccharides. Inorganic phosphorus depletion determined an increase of total polysaccharides in all species examined compared to nutrient-replete (complete f/2) conditions. The highest abundance of polysaccharides per unit cell was found in T. pseudonana (28.

Vibrio cholerae is a ubiquitously distributed human pathogen that naturally inhabits marine and estuarine ecosystems. Two serogroups are responsible for causing cholera epidemics, O1 and O139, but several non-O1 and non-O139 V. cholerae (NOVC) strains can induce cholera-like infections. Outbreaks of V. cholerae have previously been correlated with phytoplankton blooms; however, links to specific phytoplankton species have not been resolved. Here, the growth of a NOVC strain (S24) was measured in the presence of different phytoplankton species, alongside phytoplankton abundance and concentratio

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a global health problem. The association of appendectomy on the severity and prognosis of CDI has been reported in many literatures, but there are still contradictions. In a retrospective study entitled "Patients with Closterium diffuse infection and prior appendectomy may be prone to word outcomes" published in World J Gastrointest Surg 2021, the author found that prior appendectomy affects the severity of CDI. Appendectomy may be a risk factor for increasing the severity of CDI. Therefore, it is necessary to seek alternative treatment for patients

Marine diatoms are prolific producers of bioactive metabolites, but Arctic species remain underexplored as sources of antibacterial and antibiofilm agents. Here, seven species were grown in photobioreactors (PBRs) and systematically screened for antibacterial, antibiofilm, and cytotoxic activities. All strains inhibited Gram-positive bacteria, and four reduced Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm formation. Porosira glacialis emerged as a lead species, combining potent antibiofilm activity with favourable traits for large-scale cultivation, and no detectable cytotoxicity. Bioactivity-guided frac

Recent advances in fungal genome sequencing have dramatically altered our understanding of the phylogeny and evolution of Fungi. However, there are still many poorly studied obligate parasitic or symbiotic fungi for which we lack any genomic information or knowledge of where they fit in the fungal phylogeny. Ancylistes, an endoparasite of desmid green algae, is such an understudied fungal genus that is classified among Entomophthoromycotina in Zoopagomycota on the basis of morphology. However, this relationship is perplexing, because Zoopagomycota is almost entirely composed of animal-associat

An inorganic-organic composite coating is an effective way to solve the issue of marine organism attachment and realize multi-element synergistic antifouling. Herein, Bi2WO6/boron-grafted polyurethane composite coatings (BWOB) composed of Bi2WO6 with three morphologies (nanosheet, flower and microsphere) and boron-grafted polyurethane (ITB) were successfully synthesized to achieve high-efficiency antifouling. Bi2WO6 nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface and inside the ITB to form micro/nanostructures. In the composite coatings doped with flower-shaped Bi2WO6, BWOB-5 showed excel

Glufosinate-ammonium (GLAM) can be released into adjacent water bodies with rainfall runoff and return water from farmland irrigation. However, impacts of GLAM on aquatic organisms remain unclear. In this study, changes in water quality, plant physiological parameters and epiphytic microbial community were investigated in wetlands with Hydrilla verticillata exposed to GLAM for 24 days. We found GLAM addition damaged cell and reduced chlorophyll a content in Hydrilla verticillata leaves, and increased ammonium and phosphorus in water (p < 0.001). The α-diversity increased in bacterial community

The combined effects of imidacloprid (ICD) and glufosinate-ammonium (GLAM) on submerged plants and epiphytic microbial community remains unclear, despite the frequent co-occurrence of these pesticides in aquatic environments. In this study, a 24-day experiment was conducted to examine changes in water quality, plant physiology, and epiphytic microbial communities in Hydrilla verticillate-dominated wetlands under ICD alone or together with GLAM. Results showed that GLAM+ICD induced greater oxidative stress and a stronger antioxidant response in H. verticillata compared ICD alone, demonstrating

Marine antifouling coatings that rely on the release of antifouling agents are the most prevalent and effective strategy for combating fouling. However, the environmental concerns arising from the widespread discharge of these agents into marine ecosystems cannot be overlooked. An innovative and promising alternative involves incorporating antimicrobial groups into polymers to create coatings endowed with intrinsic antimicrobial properties. In this study, we reported an urushiol-based benzoxazine (URB) monomer, synthesized from natural urushiol and antibacterial rosin amine. The URB monomer wa

Crude oils produced in the North West shelf of Western Australia are highly volatile, a characteristic not shared by most of the Northern Hemisphere crude oils on which internationally accepted toxicity test protocols were developed. Because of this volatility and some other factors, the LC50 and EC50 values obtained from acute toxicity tests will be significantly affected by the changes of toxicant concentration in test solutions during the period of exposure. To address these issues all steps of a standard protocol for crude oil toxicity testing have been revised. A systematic study has been

BACKGROUND: Steryl glycosides (SGs) are sterol conjugates found in various plants, especially in those making up human diets. It has been demonstrated that SGs have potential health benefits, and they could be used as food supplements in a variety of food matrixes. Marine microalgae are a potential resource for human food and ingredients. In this study, gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-QQQ-MS) was used to characterize unknown SGs in eight microalgae belonging to different classes (Isochrysis galbana 3011, Pavlova viridis, Platymonas helgolandica, Conticribra weissflog

Background: Microalgae and cyanobacteria represent a largely unexplored source of bioactive compounds, but systematic screening of extensive strain collections is limited by the cost and complexity of conventional chemical and pharmacological characterization. Here, we evaluated a scalable functional screening strategy integrating human cell-based gene expression profiling, quantitative molecular pathway analysis, and direct cytotoxicity testing to prioritize bioactive microalgal and cyanobacterial extracts for subsequent investigation. Results: Forty-eight extracts were screened using HL-60 h

Intensification of mining has increased the vulnerability of stream ecosystems on the Central African Copperbelt (CACB) to metal pollution. This study assessed the response of microalgae to mining pollution as bioindicators of aquatic ecosystem health in the Upper Kafue River (UKR) on the CACB. Seasonal sampling was conducted at three sites along the UKR: Kafue River Farm (KRF), Hippo Pool (HP), and Mufuchani Bridge (MB). Stream sediment and microalgae samples were analysed for metals. Microalgae were identified morphotaxonomically for relative abundance (pi), Shannon-Wiener diversity (H'), Ma

Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) riboswitches are the only riboswitch class identified in eukaryotes. They therefore provide a unique model for reconstructing the evolution of RNA-based gene regulation across life's domains. We investigated the molecular evolution, structural diversification, and genomic-context reassignment of the TPP riboswitch across archaea, bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi, algae, and land plants using phylogenetic reconstruction, covariance-model-guided sequence analysis, comparative secondary-structure analysis, genomic-context annotation, and covariation-based inference. Bacteria associated with phytoplankton can profoundly influence host physiology and bloom dynamics. Yet it remains poorly understood whether the microbiota of dinoflagellates is restructured across host growth phases, and how such dynamics differ from those of other phytoplankton. Here, we tracked the microbiota of three harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming dinoflagellates (Alexandrium catenella, A. pacificum, Gymnodinium catenatum) and three diatoms (Cylindrotheca closterium, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Coscinodiscus granii), each represented by two strains of distinct spatiotemporal origin and sa

The human gut microbiota produces dozens of metabolites that accumulate in the bloodstream, where they can have systemic effects on the host. Although these small molecules commonly reach concentrations similar to those achieved by pharmaceutical agents, remarkably little is known about the microbial metabolic pathways that produce them. Here we use a combination of genetics and metabolic profiling to characterize a pathway from the gut symbiont Clostridium sporogenes that generates aromatic amino acid metabolites. Our results reveal that this pathway produces twelve compounds, nine of which a

According to the WHO classification of tumors, more than 150 typologies of hematopoietic and lymphoid tumors exist, and most of them remain incurable diseases that require innovative approaches to improve therapeutic outcome and avoid side effects. Marine organisms represent a reservoir of novel bioactive metabolites, but they are still less studied compared to their terrestrial counterparts. This review is focused on marine natural products with anticancer activity against hematological tumors, highlighting recent advances and possible perspectives. Until now, there are five commercially avai
