[Cluster statistical analysis in epidemiology].

We present a method for training subjects to control activity in a region of their orbitofrontal cortex associated with contamination anxiety using biofeedback of real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) data. Increased activity of this region is seen in relationship with contamination anxiety both in control subjects and in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a relatively common and often debilitating psychiatric disorder involving contamination anxiety. Although many brain regions have been implicated in OCD, abnormality in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is

Cluster-based exposure variation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Static posture, repetitive movements and lack of physical variation are known risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders, and thus needs to be properly assessed in occupational studies. The aims of this study were (i) to investigate the effectiveness of a conventional exposure variation analysis (EVA) in discriminating exposure time lines and (ii) to compare it with a new cluster-based method for analysis of exposure variation. METHODS: For this purpose, we simulated a repeated cyclic exposure varying within each cycle between "low" and "high" exposure levels in a "ne

Cluster-based analysis of FMRI data.

We propose a method for the statistical analysis of fMRI data that tests cluster units rather than voxel units for activation. The advantages of this analysis over previous ones are both conceptual and statistical. Recognizing that the fundamental units of interest are the spatially contiguous clusters of voxels that are activated together, we set out to approximate these cluster units from the data by a clustering algorithm especially tailored for fMRI data. Testing the cluster units has a two-fold statistical advantage over testing each voxel separately: the signal to noise ratio within the

Arcuate cluster analysis in glaucoma perimetry.

Typical glaucomatous visual field defects are often contiguous areas of diminished differential light sensitivity presenting as clusters of abnormally depressed points in the visual field chart. We investigated the value of recognizing arcuate cluster patterns, corresponding to the anatomy of the normal retinal nerve fiber layer. Cluster sizes were quantified using cluster volume and surface area. Clusters were analyzed separately in different regions of the visual field. Central 30 degrees static threshold fields from 87 eyes of 87 normal subjects and 101 eyes of 101 patients with glaucoma we

Cluster analysis profiles of suicide attempters.

The author reports the results of a three-stage cluster analysis of data on 298 patients who attempted suicide. Patients were allocated by the analysis to seven identifiable profile types that correlated with six outcome variables. These profiles include data on the social setting and the seriousness of the attempt and judgments about overall functioning and interpersonal conflict as well as the input of the patients' significant others. The author states that these profiles have prognostic significance as well as implications for the treatment of suicide attempters and the education of emotio

Individualizing the definition of seizure clusters based on temporal clustering analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Seizure clusters are often encountered in people with poorly controlled epilepsy. Detection of seizure clusters is currently based on simple clinical rules, such as two seizures separated by four or fewer hours or multiple seizures in 24 h. Current definitions fail to distinguish between statistically significant clusters and those that may result from natural variation in the person's seizures. Ability to systematically define when a seizure cluster is significant for the individual carries major implications for treatment. However, there is no uniform consensus on how to define se

Automated analysis of phylogenetic clusters.

BACKGROUND: As sequence data sets used for the investigation of pathogen transmission patterns increase in size, automated tools and standardized methods for cluster analysis have become necessary. We have developed an automated Cluster Picker which identifies monophyletic clades meeting user-input criteria for bootstrap support and maximum genetic distance within large phylogenetic trees. A second tool, the Cluster Matcher, automates the process of linking genetic data to epidemiological or clinical data, and matches clusters between runs of the Cluster Picker. RESULTS: We explore the effect

Cluster analysis of muscle functional MRI data.

Muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging (mfMRI) is frequently used to determine spatial patterns of muscle involvement in exercising humans. A frequent finding in mfMRI is that, even within synergistic muscle groups, signal intensity (SI) data from individual voxels can be quite heterogeneous. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel method for organizing heterogeneous mfMRI data into clusters whose members behave similarly to each other but distinctly from members of other clusters and apply it in studies of functional compartmentalization in the anterior compartment of the leg.

Clinical phenotyping in sarcoidosis using cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most phenotyping paradigms in sarcoidosis are based on expert opinion; however, no paradigm has been widely adopted because of the subjectivity in classification. We hypothesized that cluster analysis could be performed on common clinical variables to define more objective sarcoidosis phenotypes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 554 sarcoidosis cases to identify distinct phenotypes of sarcoidosis based on 29 clinical features. Model-based clustering was performed using the VarSelLCM R package and the Integrated Completed Likelihood (ICL) criteria were used to

Revisiting comorbidities in gout: a cluster analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The reciprocal links between comorbidities and gout are complex. We used cluster analysis to attempt to identify different phenotypes on the basis of comorbidities in a large cohort of patients with gout. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional multicentre study of 2763 gout patients conducted from November 2010 to May 2011. Cluster analysis was conducted separately for variables and for observations in patients, measuring proximity between variables and identifying homogeneous subgroups of patients. Variables used in both analyses were hypertension, obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia,

Obstructive sleep apnea subtypes by cluster analysis.

A sample of 84 adult male patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) were classified by a cluster analysis on the basis of apnea index (AI) and body mass index (BMI). Demographic, cephalometric, tongue, soft palate, and upper airway-size data were evaluated for the two subgroups of OSA patients and for 18 control subjects. One OSA group consisted of 43 patients with a high AI and low BMI ratio, the other group was comprised of 41 patients with a low AI and high BMI ratio. The patients with a high AI and low BMI ratio had retruded mandibles with high mandibular plane angles and proclined lower

Image analysis of irregularity of cluster shape in cytological diagnosis of breast tumors: cluster analysis with 2D-fractal dimension.

To establish diagnostic criteria using comparison of cell cluster shapes, between benign and malignant tumors, breast tumors demonstrating weak cellular atypia in low grade invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) were compared. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens of breast tumors were obtained from 37 patients. Among these, 16 were histologically diagnosed as IDC low-grade and the other 21 as benign fibroadenoma (FA). For evaluation, we examined 740 clusters from these 37 FNA specimens. Nine image morphometric parameters were studied, including the cluster area, circumference, maximal length, maxim

Regression analysis of clustered interval-censored data with informative cluster size.

Interval-censored data are commonly found in studies of diseases that progress without symptoms, which require clinical evaluation for detection. Several techniques have been suggested with independent assumption. However, the assumption will not be valid if observations come from clusters. Furthermore, when the cluster size relates to response variables, commonly used methods can bring biased results. For example, in a study on lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic disease where worms make several nests in the infected person's lymphatic vessels and reside until adulthood, the response variable o

Are clusters of dietary patterns and cluster membership stable over time? Results of a longitudinal cluster analysis study.

INTRODUCTION: Developing nutrition education interventions based on clusters of dietary patterns can only be done adequately when it is clear if distinctive clusters of dietary patterns can be derived and reproduced over time, if cluster membership is stable, and if it is predictable which type of people belong to a certain cluster. Hence, this study aimed to: (1) identify clusters of dietary patterns among Dutch adults, (2) test the reproducibility of these clusters and stability of cluster membership over time, and (3) identify sociodemographic predictors of cluster membership and cluster tr
