Nephrotoxic effects of Cnidaria toxins.

There are many species of animals in the marine environment which are potentially dangerous to humans. Cnidarians that are responsible for burns are mainly found in tropical waters, but there are several species with cosmopolitan distribution. In some cases, contact with toxins from Cnidarians can cause symptoms of acute kidney damage. Because of an enormous diversity of the toxins produced by individual species of cnidaria, the mechanisms of renal damage are different in different cases. Currently, there is only one antitoxin available to treat burns by Cnidarians, this antitoxin can neutrali

Differing Effects of Vinegar on Pelagia noctiluca (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) and Carybdea marsupialis (Cnidaria: Cubozoa) Stings-Implications for First Aid Protocols.

The jellyfish species that inhabit the Mediterranean coastal waters are not lethal, but their stings can cause severe pain and systemic effects that pose a health risk to humans. Despite the frequent occurrence of jellyfish stings, currently no consensus exists among the scientific community regarding the most appropriate first-aid protocol. Over the years, several different rinse solutions have been proposed. Vinegar, or acetic acid, is one of the most established of these solutions, with efficacy data published. We investigated the effect of vinegar and seawater on the nematocyst discharge p

Biology and ecology of Irukandji jellyfish (Cnidaria: Cubozoa).

Irukandji stings are a leading occupational health and safety issue for marine industries in tropical Australia and an emerging problem elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean. Their mild initial sting frequently results in debilitating illness, involving signs of sympathetic excess including excruciating pain, sweating, nausea and vomiting, hypertension and a feeling of impending doom; some cases also experience acute heart failure and pulmonary oedema. These jellyfish are typically small and nearly invisible, and their infestations are generally mysterious, making them scary to the gener

Amazonian waters harbour an ancient freshwater Ceratomyxa lineage (Cnidaria: Myxosporea).

A new species of Ceratomyxa parasitizing the gall bladder of Cichla monoculus, an endemic cichlid fish from the Amazon basin in Brazil, is described using morphological and molecular data. In the bile, both immature and mature myxospores were found floating freely or inside elongated plasmodia: length 304 (196-402) μm and width 35.7 (18.3-55.1) μm. Mature spores were elongated and only slightly crescent-shaped in frontal view with a prominent sutural line between two valve cells, which had rounded ends. Measurements of formalin-fixed myxospores: length 6.3±0.6 (5.1-7.5) μm, thickness 41.2±2.9

Novel Amazonian Ceratomyxa species (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) with amoeboid plasmodial motility.

Myxosporeans are a diverse group of cnidarian endoparasites of aquatic animals, with more than 2600 described species. The genus Ceratomyxa includes some 270 species that are mostly coelozoic and infect the gall bladders of mainly marine fish. During our survey in Tapajós River in the Brazilian Amazon, two Ceratomyxa species were discovered in the gallbladders of the anostomid fishes Schyzodon fasciatus and Schyzodon vittatus. Based on myxospore morphology and sequencing of small subunit ribosomal DNA, we propose that these are novel Ceratomyxa species. Ceratomyxa deformis n. sp. from S. fasci

A novel Ceratomyxa species (Myxozoa: Cnidaria) infecting an Amazonian catfish.

Parasites are important organisms for the health of ecosystems. While the Amazon Basin is home to a great diversity of ichthyofauna, our knowledge of myxozoan diversity in the biome remains relatively limited. The present study describes a new myxozoan species, Ceratomyxa mandii n. sp., parasitizing the gallbladder of the Amazonian catfish Pimelodina flavipinnis (Pimelodidae) from the Solimões River, in the region of Manaus, Brazil. Light and electron microscopy,  small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequencing and phylogenetic analysis were performed. The new species exhibited worm-like pla

Shared antigenicity between the polar filaments of myxosporeans and other Cnidaria.

Nematocysts containing coiled polar filaments are a distinguishing feature of members of the phylum Cnidaria. As a first step to characterizing the molecular structure of polar filaments, a polyclonal antiserum was raised in rabbits against a cyanogen bromide-resistant protein extract of mature cysts containing spores of Myxobolus pendula. The antiserum reacted only with proteins associated with extruded polar filaments. Western blot and whole-mount immunohistochemical analyses indicated a conservation of polar filament epitopes between M. pendula and 2 related cnidarians, i.e., the anthozoan,

The phylum Cnidaria and investigations of its toxins and venoms until 1990.

Cnidarians are the largest phylum of generally toxic animals, yet their toxins and venoms have not received as much scientific attention as those of many terrestrial (snakes, scorpions, spiders, etc.) and even some marine animals (i.e. cone snails). Approximately 13,000 living cnidarian species have been described by systematists. A major rationale for their study in the past, besides scientific curiosity, was to better treat victims of their envenomation. While that goal remains a high priority, it is now appreciated that the toxins of these mostly marine animals can be very useful molecular

Envenomation by a benthic Hydrozoa (Cnidaria): the case of Nemalecium lighti (Haleciidae).

A case of envenomation caused by the Nemalecium lighti is described. The hydrozoan species lives in many kinds of substrates, being quite common in tropical shallow water. The patient, a marine biologist, had contact with the animal in two different opportunities while snorkeling. Both contacts produced erythematous and highly pruriginous papules in exposed areas of the body. The signs and symptoms persisted for a week and healed without sequellae.

Calcification in the planula and polyp of the hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa).

This study examines calcification in planulae and polyps of the hydroid Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus. We observed that established colonies produce a crystalline mat on their substratum and that crystals visible by polarized light microscopy occur in the vacuoles of the gastrodermal cells of both polyps and planulae. The crystalline mat was found by infrared spectroscopy to contain calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite. The composition of the vacuolar crystals and the cellular mechanisms for manufacturing them were explored by alteration of calcium levels in the environment and by the us

Biochemical and Toxinological Characterization of Venom from Macrorhynchia philippina (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa).

Macrorhynchia philippina is a colonial benthic hydroid from the Class Hydrozoa (Phylum Cnidaria) distributed in the tropical and subtropical marine waters from Atlantic Ocean, Indo-Pacific, and Mozambique. Its colonies somewhat resemble plants, causing confusion in the bathers who accidentally touch the animal. Acute burning/local pain, edema, erythema, and pruritus were symptoms already described, but its venom composition is unknown, as well as the participation of toxins for the symptom's development. Thus, herein, we show the biochemical composition and toxic effects of M. philippina venom

Neurotoxic and neuroactive compounds from Cnidaria: five decades of research….and more.

Cnidarians are numbered among the most venomous organisms. Their venoms are contained in intracellular capsules, nematocysts, which inject the content into preys/attackers through an eversion system resembling a syringe needle. Several cnidarian venoms have activity against the nervous system, being neurotoxic, or affect other systems whose functioning is under nerve control. Besides direct damage to nerve cells, the activity on ionic conductance, blockade of neuromuscular junctions, and influence on action potentials and on voltage-gated channels have been described. Therefore, cnidarians can

Inhibition of Nematocyst Discharge from Pelagia noctiluca (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)-Prevention Measures against Jellyfish Stings.

Pelagia noctiluca stings are common in Mediterranean coastal areas and, although the venom is non-lethal, they are painful. Due to its high toxicity and abundance, P. noctiluca is considered a target species for the focus of research on active ingredients to reduce the symptoms of its sting. To determine the effect of 31 substances and formulations on nematocyst discharge, we performed three tests: (1) screening of per se discharge activator solutions, (2) inhibitory test with nematocyst chemical stimulation (5% acetic acid) and (3) inhibitory test quantifying the hemolytic area. Ammonia, bari

Sexual Reproduction in Zoanthus kuroshio and Isaurus tuberculatus (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Zoanthidae) in Southern Japan.

Among family Zoanthidae (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Zoantharia), Zoanthus and Isaurus are widespread benthos on coral reefs, but the reproductive biology of both genera is generally unknown. Accordingly, sexual reproduction of two Zoanthidae species in Japan, Zoanthus kuroshio in Okinawa, and Isaurus tuberculatus in Okinawa and Kochi, was investigated by annual sampling. Between 2012 and 2013, polyps of tagged colonies of Z. kuroshio and I. tuberculatus were sampled monthly, and gonads in mesenteries were examined under a stereomicroscope. In Z. kuroshio, sizes of oocytes were estimated and in si

Infection dynamics of Kudoa inornata (Cnidaria: Myxosporea) in spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus (Teleostei: Sciaenidae).

Kudoa inornata is a myxosporean parasite that develops in the somatic muscle of spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus, an economically and ecologically important fish in estuaries and harbors in southeastern North America. In South Carolina (SC), USA, over 90% of wild adult spotted seatrout are infected. To inform potential mitigation strategies, we conducted 3 experiments using naïve sentinel seatrout and infectious stages of K. inornata naturally present in raw water from Charleston Harbor, SC, to determine (1) if K. inornata infection follows a seasonal pattern, and (2) how long it takes for

Lepocreadiidae (Trematoda) associated with gelatinous zooplankton (Cnidaria and Ctenophora) and fishes in Australian and Japanese waters.

We examined gelatinous zooplankton from off eastern Australia for lepocreadiid trematode metacercariae. From 221 specimens of 17 species of cnidarian medusae and 218 specimens of four species of ctenophores, infections were found in seven cnidarian and two ctenophore species. Metacercariae were distinguished using cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 rDNA and morphology. We identified three species of Prodistomum Linton, 1910 [P. keyam Bray & Cribb, 1996, P. orientale (Layman, 1930), and Prodistomum Type 3], two species of Opechona Looss, 1907 [O. kahawai Bray & Cribb, 2003 and O. cf. olssoni], and Cephalolepidap

Oocyte degeneration in Pygocentrus nattereri induced by Myxobolus sp. (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) in the Brazilian Amazon.

The red piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) is a carnivorous fish of significant ecological and economic value, widely distributed across tropical and neotropical regions of South America, particularly within the Amazon basin. This study investigated the presence of Myxobolus sp. infection in the ovaries of red piranhas collected in the municipality of Pracuúba, in the state of Amapá, Brazil. During necropsy, whitish cysts suggestive of parasitic infection were observed. Microscopic examination revealed spores with morphological characteristics consistent with Myxobolus sp., predominantly located

Highly conserved and extremely evolvable: BMP signalling in secondary axis patterning of Cnidaria and Bilateria.

Bilateria encompass the vast majority of the animal phyla. As the name states, they are bilaterally symmetric, that is with a morphologically clear main body axis connecting their anterior and posterior ends, a second axis running between their dorsal and ventral surfaces, and with a left side being roughly a mirror image of their right side. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signalling has widely conserved functions in the formation and patterning of the second, dorso-ventral (DV) body axis, albeit to different extents in different bilaterian species. Whilst initial findings in the fruit fly D
