Radiological characteristics of coal-to-ash transformation: a paired coal-ash assessment of natural radionuclides.

Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in coal and its combustion residues represent a potential source of environmental contamination, particularly under large-scale energy production and waste reuse scenarios. However, the radiological transformation of radionuclides during coal combustion remains insufficiently quantified. This study applies a paired coal-ash approach to assess systematic changes in the activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th and associated radiological hazard indices. Nine hard coal samples from Poland and international sources, together with their corre

Effect of chemical composition of coal ash used to prepare granulated coal ash on the removal of hydrogen sulfide from water.

Granulated coal ash was prepared by mixing coal ash derived from a coal electric power plant and blast furnace cement, to remove hydrogen sulfide from aquatic environment. In this study, we investigate the effects of the composition of the coal ash used to prepare the granulated coal ash on its hydrogen sulfide removal performance. Manganese, magnesium, and calcium contents in the granulated coal ash were found to be the major factors in controlling the rate of hydrogen sulfide removal. The kinetics of hydrogen sulfide removal by the granulated coal ash were expressed as a first-order equation

Environmental impacts of the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston coal ash spill. 2. Effect of coal ash on methylmercury in historically contaminated river sediments.

The Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston coal ash spill in December 2008 deposited approximately 4.1 million m(3) of fly ash and bottom ash into the Emory and Clinch River system (Harriman, Tennessee, U.S.A.). The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the ash on surface water and sediment quality over an eighteen month period after the spill, with a specific focus on mercury and methylmercury in sediments. Our results indicated that surface water quality was not impaired with respect to total mercury concentrations. However, in the sediments of the Emory River near the coal a

Remediation of coastal marine sediments using granulated coal ash.

It is very important to reduce phosphorus flux from sediment as well as cutting down terrigenous loads in order to control eutrophication in semi-enclosed coastal seas. Hydrogen sulfide is also a noxious substance which is highly toxic and fatal to benthic organisms. The purpose of this study is to evaluate remediation efficiency of organically enriched sediments using granulated coal ash (GCA) in terms of reducing benthic phosphorus flux and hydrogen sulfide. A flow-through experimental system was used to simulate the semi-enclosed water bodies. The application of GCA decreased the concentrat

Durability of Concrete Made with Coal Bottom Ash Portland Cements.

The Portland cement industry, responsible for approximately 7.4% of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, must balance rising cement demand with ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets. In parallel, the rapid accumulation of industrial solid waste highlights the need for effective valorization routes. Reducing the clinker factor remains a powerful measure to mitigate climate impacts in the cement sector. This study evaluates the durability of concretes made with ground coal bottom ash (CBA), a newly standardized Portland cement constituent, using the depth of penetration of water u

Amino/thiol-functionalized silica from coal fly ash for Cu2+ removal.

The pollution incurred by heavy metal Cu2+ jeopardizes ecology and human health by means of persistence and bioaccumulation. Hence, the pollution control necessitates the development of efficient and cost-effective adsorbent materials. In this study, mesoporous silica (MS) materials were prepared via sintering-acid leaching combined with the sol-gel method using power plant Coal fly ash (CFA). These substances were chemically grafted with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (KH-590), yielding amino-functionalized (MS-NH2) and thiol-functionalized (MS-SH

Mercury removal from coal combustion flue gas by modified fly ash.

Fly ash is a potential alternative to activated carbon for mercury adsorption. The effects of physicochemical properties on the mercury adsorption performance of three fly ash samples were investigated. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other methods were used to characterize the samples. Results indicate that mercury adsorption on fly ash is primarily physisorption and chemisorption. High specific surface areas and small pore diameters are beneficial to efficient mercury removal. Incompletely burned carbon is also an important factor for the improvement of

Coal fly ash based carbons for SO2 removal from flue gases.

Two different coal fly ashes coming from the burning of two coals of different rank have been used as a precursor for the preparation of steam activated carbons. The performance of these activated carbons in the SO(2) removal was evaluated at flue gas conditions (100 degrees C, 1000 ppmv SO(2), 5% O(2), 6% H(2)O). Different techniques were used to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the samples in order to explain the differences found in their behaviour. A superior SO(2) removal capacity was shown by the activated carbon obtained using the fly ash coming from a sub-bitumino

Toxicity and occupational health hazards of coal fly ash (CFA). A review of data and comparison to coal mine dust.

Coal fly ashes (CFA) are complex particles of a variable composition, which is mainly dependent on the combustion process, the source of coal and the precipitation technique. Toxic constituents in these particles are considered to be metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and silica. The purpose of this review was to study the in vitro and in vivo data on coal fly ash and relate the studied endpoints to the role of (crystalline) silica, considering its recent classification as a human carcinogen. For most of the effects coal mine dust was chosen as a reference, since it contains up to 10% of

Ashes, embers, and coals: significant sources of burn-related morbidity in children.

Burn injuries remain the leading source of pediatric morbidity and mortality, with burns to the feet presenting unique management challenges. Characterization of the etiology of these burns may identify strategies for injury prevention. A retrospective review of pediatric patients with isolated foot burns was performed. Between September 1992 and February 2006, 155 patients were admitted with isolated foot burns. The majority (69%) of these injuries resulted from walking on hot ashes, with the remainder being from scald, flame, or contact burns. The median percent TBSA burned was similar in as

Chemical, mineralogical and morphological changes in weathered coal fly ash: a case study of a brine impacted wet ash dump.

The mobility of species in coal fly ash (FA), co-disposed with brine using a wet ash handling system, from a coal fired power generating utility has been investigated. The study was conducted in order to establish if the wet ash dump could act as a salt sink. The ash was dumped as a slurry with 5:1 brine/ash ratio and the dam was in operation for 20 years. Weathered FA samples were collected along three cores at a South African power station's wet ash dump by drilling and sampling the ash at 1.5 m depth intervals. A fresh FA sample was collected from the hoppers in the ash collection system at

Bioremediation of uranium enriched coal fly ash based on microbially induced calcite precipitation.

Coal fly ash (CFA) is an essential raw material in brickmaking industry worldwide. There are some coal mines with a relatively high content of uranium (U) in the Xinjiang region of China that are yet understudied. The CFA from these coal mines poses substantial environmental risks due to the concentrated uranium amount after coal burning. In this paper, we demonstrated a calcifying ureolytic bacterium Halomonas sp. SBC20 for its biocementation of U in CFA based on microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP). Rectangle-shaped CFA bricks were made from CFA using bacterial cells, and an elec
