The cochlea, a coiled structure located in the ventral region of the inner ear, acts as the primary structure for the perception of sound. Along the length of the cochlear spiral is the organ of Corti, a highly derived and rigorously patterned sensory epithelium that acts to convert auditory stimuli into neural impulses. The development of the organ of Corti requires a series of inductive events that specify unique cellular characteristics and axial identities along its three major axes. Here, we review recent studies of the cellular and molecular processes regulating several aspects of cochle

Abnormalities of the cochlear portion of the bony labyrinth may often be suspected but are inadequately demonstrated by conventional tomography in the antero-posterior position. Further views are necessary. The authors demonstrate this by means of a comparison between tomographic and histological sections of the inner ear of an anencephalic with a unilateral Mundini defect. Submento-vertical tomograms give a good demonstration of the cochlea.

The transduction process in the cochlea requires patent hair cells. Population responses that reflect this patency are the cochlear microphonic (CM) and summating potential (SP). They can be measured using electrocochleography (ECochG). The CM reflects the sound waveform in the form of outer hair cell (OHC) depolarization and hyperpolarization, and the SP reflects the average voltage difference of the OHC membrane potential for depolarization and hyperpolarization. The CM can be measured using ECochG or via the so-called otoacoustic emissions, using a sensitive microphone in the ear canal. Neu

The purpose of this paper is to show how temporal bone histopathology has been instrumental in adding knowledge about the origin of tinnitus in the cochlea and how it will still be useful for that purpose in the future. The papers published on this subject will be reviewed, and their contributions will be highlighted. The knowledge that is now part of the subject will be pointed out, and future research on this area will be pointed out.

Schwannoma of the vestibule or the cochlea is an unusual lesion. In the past, most examples have been found at autopsy or as unsuspected findings at surgery for vertigo. The symptoms of isolated labyrinthine schwannoma may be indistinguishable from advanced Meniere's disease. Magnetic resonance imaging has led to pre-operative diagnosis in some cases. Two cases of schwannoma within the labyrinth from a series of 339 symptomatic acoustic tumours, are presented and the imaging findings are discussed.

The coils of the cochlea are now readily demonstrated by thin-section high-resolution computed tomography (CT) in the axial plane. This assessment has become important in severely deaf patients who are candidates for cochlear implant surgery. The commonest abnormality shown in these cases is post-meningitic or tympanogenic labyrinthitis ossificans, which can obstruct the passage of the electrode. Severe otosclerosis can cause a similar problem. Congenital deformities of the labyrinth are rarely suitable for implantation, but the procedure may be indicated for the true Mondini deformity. Internal ear barotrauma are dangerous for cochlea. Out of accidents, long-term scuba diving involves no deafness. A study carries on 272 skin divers of the French Navy shows that only presbyacusis and industrial noise exposure give audiometric damages.

HYPOTHESIS: The physical relationship between anatomical landmarks such as the tympanic portion of the facial nerve and the orientation of the middle turn of the cochlea are sufficiently constant to provide guidance to surgeons performing cochlear implantation in the ossified cochlea.
BACKGROUND: Placing an implant in an ossified cochlea is technically difficult. The surgeon needs to drill two tunnels through the promontory bone to insert electrode arrays in the region of the basal and middle turns of the cochlea. However, few studies describe the orientation of these tunnels or how to use an

Georg von Békésy observed that the onset times of responses to brief-duration stimuli vary as a function of distance from the stapes, with basal regions starting to move earlier than apical ones. He noticed that the speed of signal propagation along the cochlea is slow when compared with the speed of sound in water. Fast traveling waves have been recorded in the cochlea, but their existence is interpreted as the result of an experiment artifact. Accounts of the timing of vibration onsets at the base of the cochlea generally agree with Békésy's results. Some authors, however, have argued that t

CBA/Caj mice and C57BL/6Nsd mice (animal models widely used for study of presbycusis) were used to study glycogen metabolic changes in the aging cochlea by a quantitative analysis of histochemistry. Glycogen contents in both hair cells and stria vascularis were significantly increased in CBA aged mice (18 and 36 months) as compared with those in CBA young animals (6 weeks), indicating a glycogenosis in the cochlea within naturally aging CBA mice. The glycogen contents in the stria vascularis in C57BL mice (6 weeks) was higher than in CBA (6 weeks) mice, whereas no significant difference could

The last two decades have witnessed major progress in the understanding of cochlear mechanical functioning, and in the emergence of cochlear neurochemistry and neuropharmacology. Recent models describe active processes within the cochlea that amplify and sharpen the mechanical response to sound. Although it is widely accepted that outer hair cells (OHCs) contribute to these processes, the nature of the medial efferent influence on cochlear mechanics needs further clarification. Acetylcholine (ACh) is the major transmitter released onto OHCs during the stimulation of these efferents. The inhibi

Several deficiencies affecting previous "box" models of the cochlea are overcome in this paper. Both mechanical and hydrodynamical aspects are treated at a level adequate to the complexity of realistic cochlear structures. The dynamics of the cochlea as a passive physical system, in the linear approximation, is described by an integral equation. It is further shown that this equation describes the properties of the working cochlea, provided a force term that accounts for hair cell motility is included. Numerical solutions for different degrees of outer hair cells activity, obtained by matrix m

Observation of the inner ear vessel using the casting method has the advantage of revealing the whole of the blood vessel in the one animal. This study was employed the blood vessel casting method and stylene cracking method to observe the morphological changes occurring in the inner ear vessel due to sound exposure. Results indicated vasoconstriction of the blood vessels of the cochlear lateral wall and spiral lamina due to sound exposure. Sludging of the blood cells was also recognized in these blood vessels. Such morphological changes were found to be reversible. The above findings thus imp

Microcirculation in the cochlea of l2 normal anesthetized guinea pigs was investigated after intravenous infusion of 2.4 ml/kg of 40% glycerol. In these experiments endolymphatic PO2, blood pressure, cochlear microphonics, and endocochlear potentials were recorded. Administration of glycerol caused a significant increase in endocochlear PO2 for about 30 minutes. The improvement of hearing in patients with Meniere's disease is thus not only a result of the reduced hydrostatic pressure, as has been demonstrated by others, but may also be the result of vasodilatation, which improves microcirculat

Organ-on-chips can highly simulate the complex physiological functions of organs, exhibiting broad application prospects in developmental research, disease simulation, as well as new drug research and development. However, there is still less concern about effectively constructing cochlea-on-chips. Here, a novel cochlear organoids-integrated conductive hydrogel biohybrid system with cochlear implant electroacoustic stimulation (EAS) for cochlea-on-a-chip construction and high-throughput drug screening, is presented. Benefiting from the superior biocompatibility and electrical property of condu

Orchestration of protein production and degradation and the regulation of protein lifetimes play a central role in many basic biological processes. Nearly all mammalian proteins are replenished by protein turnover in waves of synthesis and degradation. Protein lifetimes in vivo are typically measured in days, but a small number of extremely long-lived proteins (ELLPs) persist for months or even years. ELLPs are rare in all tissues but are enriched in tissues containing terminally differentiated post-mitotic cells and extracellular matrix. Consistently, emerging evidence suggests that the cochl

Mixed hearing loss associated with a sensorineural component and an impaired conductive mechanism for sound from the external ear canal to the cochlea represents a challenge for rehabilitation using either surgery or traditional hearing amplification. Direct stimulations of the ossicular chain and the round window (RW) membrane have allowed an improved hearing in this population. The authors review the developments in basic and clinical research that have allowed the exploration of new routes for inner ear stimulation. Similar changes occur in the electrophysiological measures in response to a

This review summarizes paleontological data as well as studies on the morphology, function, and molecular evolution of the cochlea of living mammals (monotremes, marsupials, and placentals). The most parsimonious scenario is an early evolution of the characteristic organ of Corti, with inner and outer hair cells and nascent electromotility. Most remaining unique features, such as loss of the lagenar macula, coiling of the cochlea, and bony laminae supporting the basilar membrane, arose later, after the separation of the monotreme lineage, but before marsupial and placental mammals diverged.
