Study of cochlear microphonic potentials in auditory neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory Neuropathy/Dyssynchrony is a disorder characterized by the presence of Otoacoustic Emissions and Cochlear Microphonic Potentials, an absence or severe alteration of Brainstem Evoked Auditory Potential, auditory thresholds incompatible with speech thresholds and altered acoustic reflexes. The study of the Cochlear Microphonic Potential appears to be the most important tool for an accurate diagnosis of this pathology. OBJECTIVE: Determine the characteristics of the Cochlear Microphonic in Auditory Neuropathy/Dyssynchrony using an integrative review. METHODS: Bibliographi

[Study of the mechanism of auditory adaptation by simultaneous recording of cortical auditory evoked potentials and cochlear microphonic potentials].

Auditory adaptation, apart from the effect of the neurotropic drugs, galanthamine, GABA and nanophyn on this adaptation, was examined in 35 rabbits exposed to white noise (90 dB, re 2.10(-5) Pa, 10 min) by concurrent recording of evoked potentials of the brain and microphonic potentials of the cochlea. The results suggest that the mechanism of auditory adaptation is determined by the processes that occur in the synapses of the auditory system central parts and is monitored by the sympathetic nervous system.

Increase in cochlear microphonic potential after toluene administration.

Human and animal studies have shown that toluene can cause hearing loss. In the rat, the outer hair cells are first disrupted by the ototoxicant. Because of their particular sensitivity to toluene, the cochlear microphonic potential (CMP) was used for monitoring the cochlea activity of anesthetized rats exposed to both noise (band noise centered at 4 kHz) and toluene. In the present experiment, the conditions were specifically designed to study the toluene effects on CMP and not those of its metabolites. To this end, 100-microL injections of a vehicle containing different concentrations of sol

Salicylate ototoxicity and its implications for cochlear microphonic potential generation.

Salicylic acid causes a reversible sensori-neural hearing loss. Its ototoxicity is probably related to its effect on prestin, the motor protein of the outer hair cells. In order to gain further insight into the mechanism and implications of its ototoxicity, auditory nerve brainstem evoked responses, compound action potentials of the auditory nerve, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, and cochlear microphonic potentials (CM) and vestibular evoked potentials were recorded before and after systemic salicylate administration. These responses were depressed, except for the CM and the vestibul

Changes of the action potential, the summating potential and cochlear microphonics in experimental endolymphatic hydrops.

The changes of the action potential (AP), the summating potential (SP) and cochlear microphonics (CM) were investigated in reference to the grade of endolymphatic hydrops produced by endolymphatic sac obliteration in guinea pigs. In a few cases with minimum endolymphatic hydrops, super-normal AP was obtained. With an increase of endolymphatic hydrops, CM responses were reduced although AP responses at intensive stimulation were maintained relatively well. It is thought that the polarity of positive SP, as observed in control, was influenced to deflect towards negative SP by an interaction betw

Effects of trichloroethylene exposure on hearing. An investigation of cochlear microphonics and action potential of the guinea pig.

Four groups of guinea pigs with normal Preyer's reflex were exposed to trichloroethylene (TCE). Each group consisted of nine to 10 naive male albino Hartley guinea pigs of 9 weeks of age with a body weight of approximately 400 g. To test the suggestion that TCE causes damage to the cochlear system, a study was conducted involving four experiments. The results were as follows: No significant difference was observed between the intensity functions of the CM (4 kHz) and AP (7 kHz) potentials of the control groups and those of the TCE-exposed groups by analysis of variance. It was considered that

Cochlear microphonics and action potentials mature and decline at different rates in the normal and pathologic mouse cochlea.

A technique is described that can nontraumatically assess cochlear microphonic (CM) and cochlear action potential (AP) thresholds to pure tones in the intact mouse. This method was applied to the normal hearing CBA/J, and to the C57BL/6J, which has early-onset hearing loss. CM thresholds are most sensitive in both mice by 23 days of age, and the C57BL/6J CM responses degenerate rapidly thereafter, especially at the high-frequency end. The CMs of the CBA/J continue to change past 23 days, developing a threshold dip at 24 kHz, and becoming slightly less sensitive at 32 kHz. The AP of the C57BL/6

An experimental study of the effects of lead acetate on hearing. Cochlear microphonics and action potential of the guinea pig.

Guinea pigs were poisoned with repeated i.p. injections of 1% lead acetate. After 5 weeks, the animals were examined electrophysiologically by using cochlear microphonics (CM) and action potential (AP). The thresholds of maximum voltage of N1 in the AP of the animals injected with a total of 100 mg lead acetate were elevated about 15 dB and increased N1 latency was also observed. However, no significant changes in those of CM were found. The results suggest that lead acetate not only induces damage to the peripheral nerves, but also to the cranial nerves.

Effects of high-frequency sound on the guinea pig cochlea. Electrophysiological study using cochlear microphonics, action and endocochlear potential.

There are only a few studies investigating the effect of high-frequency sound on hearing. Authors investigated experimentally the effect of long exposure to high-frequency sound (19 and 25 kHz) below 100 dB (SPL) on guinea pig inner ear. Changes in cochlear microphonics (decrease of maximum output voltage) and especially in endocochlear potential (decrease of the absolute value of negative potential) were observed. The effects of high-frequency sound (10-30 kHz) on the inner ear were discussed.

Cochlear Microphonic and Summating Potential Responses from Click-Evoked Auditory Brain Stem Responses in High-Risk and Normal Infants.

BACKGROUND: Examination of cochlear and neural potentials is necessary to assess sensory and neural status in infants, especially those cared for in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) who have high rates of hyperbilirubinemia and thus are at risk for auditory neuropathy (AN). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether recording parameters commonly used in click-evoked auditory brain stem response (ABR) are useful for recording cochlear microphonic (CM) and Wave I in infants at risk for AN. Specifically, we analyzed CM, summating potential (SP), and Waves I, III, and V. The

Effect of 4 kHz tone exposure on the guinea pig inner ear: relation in the change of cochlear microphonics, action potential, electrochemical potential and K+ ion concentration induced by noise exposure.

Using 110 male albino guinea pigs, and applying electrophysiological methods, we investigated the effects of 4 kHz tone at moderate sound pressure level on the inner ear at different exposure times (6, 12, 24 and 48 h). Longer than 12 h exposure to 4 kHz tone had a considerable effect on the hearing, inducing a decrease in the maximum output voltage of cochlear microphonics and an increase in the K+ concentration in the endolymph.

The effect of 6 kHz tone exposure on inner ear function of the guinea pig: relation to changes in cochlear microphonics, action potential, endocochlear potential and chemical potentials of K(+)-ions and Na(+)-ions, using a double-barrel glass electrode.

Using 97 male albino guinea pigs and applying electrophysiological methods, the effects of a 6 kHz tone were investigated at a moderate sound pressure level to the inner ear during a 24-h exposure time. Following exposure to the 6 kHz tone at 90 dB, cochleas showed decreased maximum output voltage of cochlear microphonics (CM) and action potential (AP). In the endolymph, K+ ion and Na+ ion concentrations remained unchanged during 40 min anoxia and 90 dB tone exposure. At 80 dB sound exposure decreases in maximum output voltage of CM and AP and decreases in the absolute value of EP could not be

[Clinical interpretation of microphonic potentials by electrocochleography].

The clinical electrocochleography essentially allows the registration of the global action potential of the acoustic nerve. The use of acoustic stimulations with alternating polarity eliminates the cochlear microphonics. In severe deafness, where no action potential can be registered, even not with maximal acoustic impulses, it can be interesting to register the microphonic potentials. This can be done by using acoustic stimulations with the same polarity. If some microphonic potentials can be registered by this technique, one can assume that the ciliated cells are -- at least partially -- una
