Usually, schwannomas of the eight nerve arise from the vestibular nerve. Yet, the authors have operated from September 1993 to September 1995 three neuromas whose origin is certainly the cochlear nerve. Surgery was performed by retro-sigmoid approach magnified by endoscopic procedure of the cerebello-pontine angle before and after removing the tumor. We report here the cases and the literature is documented. Similar cases of observing cochlear neuromas at the moment of the procedure are exceptional. Because of more and more early diagnosis of these tumors, advances of microsurgery in ponto-cer

HYPOTHESIS: Electrocauterization and subsequent transection of the cochlear nerve induce greater injury to the cochlear nucleus than sharp transection alone.
BACKGROUND: Some studies show that neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) patients fit with auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) fail to achieve speech perception abilities similar to ABI recipients without NF2. Reasons for these differences remain speculative. One hypothesis posits poorer performance to surgically induced trauma to the cochlear nucleus from electrocautery. Sustained electrosurgical depolarization of the cochlear nerve may cause e

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate speech perception after cochlear implantation in children with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency.
METHODS: A retrospective case review was performed to identify children who underwent cochlear implantation with cochlear nerve absence or deficiency. The cochlear nerve was evaluated by high-resolution three-dimensional T2-weighted fast spin echo MR in the oblique sagittal and axial planes. A deficient cochlear nerve was defined as a cochlear nerve that is smaller in diameter when compared with the adjacent facial nerve in the midportion of the internal auditory canal.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of cochlear-facial nerve dehiscence (CFD) in cochlear implant (CI) recipients, measure cochlear-facial nerve partition width (CFPW), and analyze the relationship of CFD and CFPW for the presence or absence of facial nerve stimulation (FNS).
METHODS: A retrospective review of 314 ears from 294 adult CI recipients was conducted. Two blinded reviewers measured CFPW and identified cases with CFD from the preoperative or postoperative high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scan. Analyses included the associations of CFPW and CFD with FNS, defined as facial

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A crucial factor for a successful cochlear implant (CI) outcome is an intact auditory nerve (AN). The integrity of the AN can be tested during implantation by measuring electrical auditory brainstem responses (eABR) via the CI. A method that does not require a CI is the use of the auditory nerve test stimulator (ANTS) from MED-EL (Innsbruck, Austria). The aim of the current study was to investigate the cases tested with the ANTS at our clinic and to describe the hearing results following CI for the cases who were implanted with a CI.
METHODS: All patients underwent preo

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation is an effective treatment method for severe to profound hearing loss. Many factors that may influence cochlear implantation success have been explained in previous studies. Apart from those, minor differences in size of normal cochlear nerves may affect postoperative performance.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the minor differences in cochlear nerve size in normal cochlear nerves affect postoperative cochlear implant performance.
METHODS: 30 pediatric prelingually deaf patients who were treated with cochlear implantation were included in this study. Fro

During systematic study of temporal bone histopathology at The Deafness Foundation, Memphis, we found an unsuspected small schwannoma arising solely from the cochlear nerve, compressing the facial nerve within the internal auditory canal. The primary temporal bone pathologic finding was bilateral otosclerosis. Compression of the facial nerve by schwannomas of the cochlear nerve is well know to occur at a late stage and produce a lower motor neuron facial paralysis but, in the present case, although the growth of th tumor compressed the facial nerve trunk, no paralysis was noted. The assessment process is critical in deciding whether a profoundly deaf child with cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) will be suitable for a cochlear or auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using submillimetric T2 weighted gradient echo or turbo spin echo sequences is mandatory for all profoundly deaf children to diagnose CND. Evidence of audition on behavioural or electrophysiological tests following both auditory and electrical stimulation sometimes allows identification of significant auditory tissue not visible on MRI. In particular electric auditory brainstem r

The innervation of the auditory organ of the alligator lizard is described. Patterns of distribution of the nerve fibers were studied at the light microscopic level with the horseradish peroxidase technique, and the types of synaptic contacts with hair cells were studied at the transmission electron microscopic level with standard techniques. The innervation of the two regions of the basilar papilla differs in the following ways. In the apical region, some fibers send branches along the length of the basilar papilla, and both afferent (non-vesiculated) and efferent (vesiculated) nerve endings

Cochlear nerves of 11 patients with advanced Meniere's disease were studied by light and electron microscopy. All the nerves appeared normal on light microscopy. In cross sections, the density of myelinated nerve fibers was approximately 20,000 fibers per square millimeter in most cases. In two cases, the density was reduced, about 14,000/sq mm. No correlation was found between the age of patients or the duration of the disease and the density of myelinated nerve fibers. On electron microscopy, there were several features that suggested primary axonal degeneration or segmental demyelination in

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Noonan syndrome (NS) is a congenital disorder characterized by a wide heterogeneity in clinical and genetic features. Hearing loss can frequently occur in NS, although not always mentioned in its diagnostic criteria. We are reporting on a child with an established NS who underwent bilateral cochlear implantation (CI) in the setting of cochlear nerve deficiency.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a child-girl affected by NS. Newborn hearing screening and audiological evaluations reveled an asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), profound at left ear and severe
