Pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism in a cockatoo.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old female intact Moluccan cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) was evaluated because of coelomic distention, presumed to be secondary to an abdominal hernia. The patient also had a history of rapid weight gain and polyuria and polydipsia. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Ultrasonography was used to confirm the existence of a pseudohernia that appeared to contain the small intestines, pancreas, and reproductive tract. Results of plasma biochemical analysis revealed hyperglycemia, hypophosphatemia, and high nonfasting bile acid concentrations and aspartate aminotransferase activity. A

Osteosarcoma of the wing in a sulfur-crested cockatoo.

A 26-year-old female sulfur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was evaluated for vocalizing through the night and extending her right wing. Physical examination revealed a large, firm mass extending from the humerus to the distal aspect of the elbow. Computed tomography confirmed a large aggressive mass of the right distal humerus with a large soft tissue component, severe osteolysis, and adjacent periosteal proliferation. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass were most compatible with sarcoma, and osteosarcoma was prioritized. An unstained slide was treated with nitroblue tetrazolium chloride/5-

Fatal hepatic trematodiasis in cockatoos due to Platynosomum proxillicens.

Severe hepatic trematodiasis due to Platynosomum proxillicens was diagnosed as the cause of death in two sulfur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua sulfurea). Gross pathologic alterations included hepatomegaly in one bird and hepatic and generalized cyanosis in the other. Microscopic changes included multifocal hepatic necrosis, dilated fibrous bile ducts containing trematode, parasites, bile duct hyperplasia, and hepatic inflammation.

Testing weight-based conditional discrimination in Goffin's cockatoos, Cacatua goffiniana.

Discrimination learning tasks are a method for investigating species' perception of and associative learning with a particular stimulus. Goffin's cockatoos previously required surprisingly few trials to differentiate objects based on weight alone in a simple discrimination task, outperforming primates in other weight discrimination setups. Nevertheless, it was unclear whether the difference in performance was largely based on ability or differences in experimental procedures. Therefore, we tested a group of Goffin's cockatoos on a weight-based conditional discrimination, like a task previously

Cryptosporidiosis in four cockatoos with psittacine beak and feather disease.

Cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in 4 cockatoos with psittacine beak and feather disease. Three of the birds had cryptosporidiosis confined to the epithelium covering the bursa of Fabricius. One bird had generalized parasitism of the small intestine, large intestine, and bursal epithelium. All of the birds had intermittent to protracted diarrhea before death. Presumably, acquired immunodeficiency from psittacine beak and feather disease promoted establishment of cryptosporidiosis and other secondary diseases including septicemia, peritonitis, chlamydiosis, and mycotic ventriculitis.

Sensitivity to permanent non-functionality in Goffin's cockatoos (Cacatua goffiniana).

While the ability to recognize that something is irreparably broken is important for human physical and social cognition, its underpinnings remain largely unexplored in non-human animals. Recognizing the permanent loss of function is highly relevant to foraging on perishable resources and to interacting with breakable objects such as wooden tools. Nevertheless, learning how to respond to such permanent non-functionality has broader implications, as it has been proposed to represent an important prerequisite for the development of a minimal concept of death. The Goffin's cockatoo, an opportunis

Melioidosis in a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita).

A case of melioidosis in a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) kept as a pet in Townsville is described. This case was characterised by liver necrosis with both a heterophil and mononuclear cell inflammatory response associated with giant cells. Pseudomonas pseudomallei was isolated by blood plate culture and guinea pig inoculation. This is the first case of melioidosis reported in a native bird in Australia.

Neuroangiostrongyliasis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis in gang-gang cockatoos (Callocephalon fimbriatum).

CASE REPORT: Four gang-gang cockatoos from an aviary in Sydney displayed severe neurological signs. Three were necropsied and histopathology of the brains and spinal cords revealed migrating nematodes, which were identified as Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The migrating larval nematodes created tracts of malacia in the brain, but elicited little inflammatory cell infiltration. However, adult nematodes that had emerged onto the meningeal surface of the spinal cord evoked a marked non-suppurative reaction. Detailed histological examination of other tissues revealed larvae embedded in arterioles i

Beak and feather dystrophy in wild sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita).

Three flocks of wild sulphur-crested cockatoos in southeastern Australia had a 10-20% prevalence of feather and beak deformities. In affected birds, the crest, tail, contour and down feathers were lost or reduced in length owing to a "pinching off" 0.5-1 cm above the skin. The underlying skin was discolored brown. Flight feathers appeared normal and could sustain flight. In mildly affected birds, only the crest and down feathers were involved. Histological examination of affected feathers showed necrosis of developing cells in their epidermal collars. The epidermis was moderately hyperplastic

Branchial Cyst With Carcinoma in an Umbrella Cockatoo (Cacatua alba).

A 16-year-old female umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) was presented for a fluctuant, right-sided cervical mass that extended from the caudolateral edge of the right mandible to the coelomic inlet. Results of initial diagnostic tests were consistent with a cystic mass containing hemorrhage. Surgical exploration and removal of the mass was done, but because the hyoid apparatus was incorporated in the base of the cyst, complete surgical excision was not possible. Histopathologic results were consistent with a branchial cyst with carcinoma. Five months after surgery, the cockatoo exhibited intermi

Tool making cockatoos adjust the lengths but not the widths of their tools to function.

The ability to innovatively use or even manufacture different tools depending on a current situation can be silhouetted against examples of stereotyped, inborn tool use/manufacture and is thus often associated to advanced cognitive processing. In this study we confronted non-specialized, yet innovative tool making birds, Goffin's cockatoos (Cacatua goffiniana), with an apparatus featuring an out-of-reach food reward that could be placed at different distances from a tool opening. Alternatively, the food stayed at a constant distance but the tool opening in the front of the apparatus had differ

Foraging enrichment alleviates oral repetitive behaviors in captive red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii).

The relationship between inadequate foraging opportunities and the expression of oral repetitive behaviors has been well documented in many production animal species. However, this relationship has been less-well examined in zoo-housed animals, particularly avian species. The expression of oral repetitive behavior may embody a frustrated foraging response, and may therefore be alleviated with the provision of foraging enrichment. In this study, we examined the effect of different foraging-based enrichment items on a group of captive red-tailed black cockatoos who were previously observed perfo

From the "sticker" to the "seed" slide: Challenges testing concurrent tooling in Goffin's cockatoos.

Although Goffin's cockatoos (Cacatua goffiniana) can innovate the use of two tools in a sequence, it is unknown whether they have the capacity to use two tools concurrently, which supposes a higher level of complexity in order to manage the spatial relations between objects. According to tooling theory, such a high degree of spatial management is beyond the capacity of nonhuman animals. In this experiment, we set out to test this prediction with a species that has exhibited some of the most complex tool use in the animal kingdom, the Goffin's cockatoo. We used a concurrent tool use task previo

Vegetative Endocarditis due to Staphylococcus aureus in an Umbrella Cockatoo (Cacatua alba).

A 15-year-old, female cockatoo (Cacatua alba) was presented with a history of intermittent cloacal prolapse of 1-year duration. After each prolapse, the owner would digitally reduce the distended cloacal tissue within approximately 12-24 hours, for short-term resolution. The cockatoo was examined 3 times over a 7-month period and received supportive care with leuprolide acetate, behavioral modification, and diet change. After the third examination, the owner decided to proceed with a surgical cloacopexy. Five days after the last examination and before the procedure was scheduled, the cockatoo

A 28-year-old, female umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) was evaluated because of lethargy, anorexia, regurgitation, and coelomic swelling of 6 month's duration, which corresponded to cessation of egg laying. Radiographs and ultrasound examination demonstrated extensive deposits of coelomic fat and an enlarged oviduct. Exploratory celiotomy demonstrated copious amounts of firm, nodular fat completely surrounding the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in extensive chronic adhesions between intestinal loops. Innovative composite tool use by human children: adapting the golf club task from Goffin's cockatoos.

We adapted a composite tool innovation task that had been solved by Goffin's cockatoos to be suitable for human children. Participants had to use a stick to push a ball onto a collapsible platform to release a reward. We tested a total of 204 participants: 187 children aged 4 to 8-years-old and 17 adults. There was a gradual increase in the proportion of children innovating composite tool use from 50% at 3-4 years to almost 90% at 7-8 years. 94% of adults innovated composite tool use. We replicated the innovation gap reported in previous studies: most children who failed succeeded following pr

Gross and histopathological findings in hindlimb paralysis syndrome in wild Carnaby's black cockatoos (Zanda laitirostris).

The aim of this study was to describe the gross and histopathological features of a neurological syndrome in endangered Western Australian Carnaby's black cockatoos (Zanda laitirostris) that was first observed in 2012. The syndrome, named hindlimb paralysis syndrome in Carnaby's cockatoos (CHiPS), is characterized by annual outbreaks of hindlimb paralysis with occasional loss of deep pain and cloacal tone, typically occurring between January and March. Previous limited investigations suggested a possible toxic aetiology. Full gross necropsy and histopathology examinations were performed on 17
