Anxiety and depressive disorders are major contributors to global disability and are frequently accompanied by cognitive impairment, stress-system dysregulation, and cardiometabolic comorbidity. Although pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments remain central, limited access, partial response, and persistent residual symptoms highlight the need for integrative and scalable interventions. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on physical activity and structured exercise as systemic biological interventions for depression and anxiety, integrating clinical findings with mechanistic p

Social cognition, including theory of mind, empathy, social perception, and behavior, is crucial for interpersonal relationships and social functioning. Impairments in social cognition have also been recognized in neurodegenerative disorders including frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. This review defines social cognition components, summarizes assessment tools, and evaluates their clinical applicability in these disorders. Despite research, the incorporation of social cognition assessments into clinical practice remains limited. Developing standardized, val

Macaques (Macaca spp.) are useful models to evaluate effects of ovarian sex steroids and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) on mood and cognitive function due to similarities to women in their reproductive and central nervous systems. The results of nonhuman primate studies support the hypothesis that estrogen mediates specific aspects of attention and memory, yet much work is needed to understand which cognitive processes are affected, whether natural versus surgical menopause effects are different, and the interaction of age and ovarian senescence on cognitive function. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are a heterogeneous group of lipoproteins composed of various lipids and proteins. HDL is formed both in the systemic circulation and in the brain. In addition to being a crucial player in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway, HDL possesses a wide range of other functions including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, pro-endothelial function, anti-thrombosis, and modulation of immune function. It has been firmly established that high plasma levels of HDL protect against cardiovascular disease. Accumulating evidence indicates that the beneficial role of HDL

Twin and family studies have demonstrated that most cognitive traits are moderately to highly heritable. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia, autism, and specific language impairment (SLI) also show strong genetic influence. Nevertheless, it has proved difficult for researchers to identify genes that would explain substantial amounts of variance in cognitive traits or disorders. Although this observation may seem paradoxical, it fits with a multifactorial model of how complex human traits are influenced by numerous genes that interact with one another, and with the environment, to pr

Detecting willful cognition in these patients is known to be challenging due to the patients' motor disabilities and high vigilance fluctuations but also due to the lack of expertise and use of adequate tools to assess these patients in specific settings. This review will discuss the main disorders of consciousness after severe brain injury, how to assess consciousness and cognition in these patients, as well as the challenges and tools available to overcome these challenges and reach an accurate diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar neurodegenerative disorders (CDs) are a heterogeneous group of disorders. It is known that the cerebellum plays a role not only in motor, but also in cognitive and social cognitive functions. The aim of this study was to investigate social cognition in patients with different CDs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Social cognition was examined in 34 patients, 12 with spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1), 6 with spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), and 16 with idiopathic late onset cerebellar ataxia (ILOCA). All patients were clinically evaluated using the Scale for the Rating and

It has become evident recently only that microglia are not only responsible for immunomodulatory functions in the brain but represent vital components of the larger synaptic formation, which also includes pre and postsynaptic neurones as well as astrocytes. Microglia critically contribute to CNS homeostasis by their actions in phagocytosis of cellular debris, release of a variety of cell signaling factors including neurotrophins and extracellular matrix components and direct contact with neurons. The purpose of this review is to summarize our current understanding of the involvement of microgl

Prevalence rates of cognitive impairment in persons aged 75 to 85 years are in the range of 10 to 19 percent, and 20 to 47 percent after the age of 85 years. Screening for dementia in persons aged 75 years and older would therefore identify a significant number of impaired persons. When screening for dementia, group testing would be more cost-effective than individual testing. We modified the Folstein Mini-Mental State examination (MMSE) for screening in a group setting. Community volunteers were tested at a geriatric health fair and at a special exercise class for the elderly. Subjects were s

Many aspects of cognition and behaviour are regulated by noradrenergic projections to the forebrain originating from the locus coeruleus, acting through alpha and beta adrenoreceptors. Loss of these projections is common in neurodegenerative diseases and contributes to their cognitive and behavioural deficits. We review the evidence for a noradrenergic modulation of cognition in its contribution to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other cognitive disorders. We discuss the advances in human imaging and computational methods that quantify the locus coeruleus and its function in human

Sleep-related breathing disorders encompass a range of disorders in which abnormal ventilation occurs during sleep as a result of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway, altered respiratory drive, abnormal chest wall movement, or respiratory muscle function. The most common of these is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurring in both adults and children, and causing significant cognitive and daytime dysfunction and reduced quality of life. OSA patients experience repetitive brief cessation of breathing throughout the night, which causes intermittent hypoxemia (reductions in hemogl

Numerous lines of research indicate that our social brain involves a network of cortical and subcortical brain regions that are responsible for sensing and controlling body movements. However, it remains unclear whether movement disorders have a systematic impact on social cognition. To address this question, we conducted a systematic review examining the influence of hyperkinetic movement disorders (including Huntington disease, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, and essential tremor) on social cognition. Following the PRISMA guidelines and registering the protocol in the PROSPERO database (CRD4202

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are an early and prominent feature of Huntington's disease (HD).
OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated the relation between sleep quality impairment and cognitive and psychiatric symptoms in patients with HD.
METHODS: Sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and neurocognitive symptoms were assessed in 38 mutation carriers (23 premanifest and 15 early stage) and 38 age-and sex-matched controls using standardized questionnaires (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the cognitive section of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale, the

The next several decades will see an exponential rise in the number of patients with disorders of memory and cognition, and of Alzheimer's disease in particular. Impending demographic shifts, an absence of effective treatments, and the significant burden these conditions place on patients, caregivers, and society, mean there is an urgent need to develop novel therapies. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that is a standard-of-care for many patients with treatment-refractory Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and essential tremor. DBS has proven to be an effective means of mo

A 68 year old man developed progressive cognitive impairment with an akinetic-rigid syndrome which was atypically responsive to levodopa. The patient died after 18 months and the postmortem examination showed typical Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra and pale bodies in the cortex which were unlabelled by ubiquitin antibodies. This case is particular by the neuropathological examination (no immunoreactivity to antibodies against ubiquitin) and by the abnormal response to treatment (dystonia). These two aspects are discussed.

Human visual cognition relies on two major streams that originate in the primary visual cortex: the ventral stream, which projects to the temporal lobe, and the dorsal stream, which projects to the parietal lobe. The ventral stream processes visual features such as shape, color, and texture, which are integrated to support object recognition. Within this stream, cortical regions are further organized by stimulus categories, including faces, places, words, and objects. The dorsal stream links vision with action and spatial behavior and can be subdivided into two functional substreams. The dorso

INTRODUCTION: The Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a genetic condition characterized by an X supernumerary sex chromosome in males. The syndrome is frequently associated with cognitive impairment. Indeed, the different areas of the executive sphere can be affected such as inhibition, cognitive flexibility but also attentional and visual-spatial domain. Social cognition disorders, predominantly on emotional recognition processes, have also been documented. In addition, the syndrome may be associated with psychiatric symptoms.

Introduction and method: Over the last few decades many studies have demonstrated that various populations with movement disorder exhibit a variety of difficulties with social cognition. This brief review paper summarises the major findings of social cognitive research conducted in various hypo- and hyper-kinetic movement disorders (Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and Tourette syndrome), with a focus on findings that may shed new light on the functions of the basal ganglia. Results: Task impairments include more predictable difficulties with embodied processes involving the motor syst
