Cognitive reserve in aging.

Cognitive reserve explains why those with higher IQ, education, occupational attainment, or participation in leisure activities evidence less severe clinical or cognitive changes in the presence of age-related or Alzheimer's disease pathology. Specifically, the cognitive reserve hypothesis is that individual differences in how tasks are processed provide reserve against brain pathology. Cognitive reserve may allow for more flexible strategy usage, an ability thought to be captured by executive functions tasks. Additionally, cognitive reserve allows individuals greater neural efficiency, greate

Cognitive reserve and the neurobiology of cognitive aging.

A hypothetical construct of "cognitive reserve" is widely used to explain how, in the face of neurodegenerative changes that are similar in nature and extent, individuals vary considerably in the severity of cognitive aging and clinical dementia. Intelligence, education and occupational level are believed to be major active components of cognitive reserve. Here, we summarize the main features of cognitive aging and their neuropathological correlates. We describe the neurobiology of cognitive aging and conclude that perturbations of neural health attributable to oxidative stress and inflammator

Natural Pattern of Cognitive Aging.

BACKGROUND: Considering the world's rapidly increasing life expectancy, with people working and maintaining active lifestyles longer than ever before, addressing the effects of aging on cognition is of utmost importance. A greater understanding of cognitive aging may also be critical in distinguishing natural cognitive aging from pre-clinical stages of Alzheimer's disease and related cognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: To systematically examine the association between aging and cognitive performance in a cognitively and otherwise healthy probability population-based sample using a computer-based

[Neurocognitive aging and cognitive disorders].

Aging is the leading risk factor of the most common cognitive disorders, primarily Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. These diseases have a progressive course and pathological underlying processes develop long before the onset of clinical signs of cognitive impairment. In the context of current trends in population aging and the steady increase in the number of patients with dementia, the search for factors contributing to the acceleration of neurocognitive aging processes, as well as factors with a modifying effect on these processes, is a key element in the effective management of el

[Cognitive aging of bipolar patients].

Bipolar disorder is a severe, recurrent mood disorder, associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. A new population of aging bipolar patients is emerging for which specific studies are scarce. There seem to be an association between bipolar disorder and major cognitive disorder, significantly affecting patients' psychosocial outcomes. Though the neuropathological mecanisms underlying such an evolution have yet to be found, there are three paradigms that can help us understand the clinical heterogeneity within the aging bipolar group. First, there seem to be different cognitive en

Biology of cognitive aging across species.

Aging is associated with cognitive decline, which can critically affect quality of life. Examining the biology of cognitive aging across species will lead to a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms involved in this process, and identify potential interventions that could help to improve cognitive function in aging individuals. This minireview aimed to explore the mechanisms and processes involved in cognitive aging across a range of species, from flies to rodents, and covers topics, such as the role of reactive oxygen species and autophagy/mitophagy in cognitive aging. Overall, th

The Overview of Cognitive Aging Models.

To understand the cause of the age-related decline in cognitive function and its underlying mechanism, the cognitive aging model can provide us with important insights. In this section, we will introduce behavioral and neural models about age-related cognitive changes. Among behavioral models, several aging theories were discussed from the perspectives of educational, biological, and sociological factors, which could explain parts of the aging process. With the development of imaging technology, many studies have discussed the neural mechanism of aging and successively proposed neural models t

Zinc in Cognitive Impairment and Aging.

Zinc, an essential micronutrient for life, was first discovered in 1869 and later found to be indispensable for the normal development of plants and for the normal growth of rats and birds. Zinc plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes in normal mammalian brain development, especially in the development of the central nervous system. Zinc deficiency can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, mental abnormalities, sleep disorders, tumors, vascular diseases, and other pathological conditions, which can cause cognitive impairment and premature aging. This study aimed

Cognitive function in aging cocaine smokers.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the functional status of older drug users, who may pose challenges to public health systems in coming years. Here, we assessed cognitive function in aging cocaine smokers compared to demographically matched controls. METHODS: A total of 22 non-treatment-seeking aging (50-60 years old) cocaine smokers (⩾twice/week; ⩾15 years of weekly use) and 19 controls completed a comprehensive cognitive battery. Controls with cannabis, tobacco, and alcohol use were included to better match the cocaine users. All cocaine users, and current cannabis- or alcohol-using control

Cognitive aging and auditory information processing.

Over the last decade, much research has been conducted to investigate why older listeners report more difficulty in understanding spoken language than would be expected given their degree of audiometric hearing loss. Of particular relevance to audiological rehabilitation is recent research on older listeners when they are engaged in complex tasks involving the auditory processing of naturalistic signals in realistic social and physical environments Discourse epitomizes such activity. By understanding age-related and individual differences in perceptual and cognitive performance, we gain import

[Cognitive aging in chronic psychotic patients].

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive aging of psychotic patients is still poorly apprehended and sometimes wrongly compared with demential or pseudo-demential deterioration. We studied the impact of chronic psychosis on cognitive performance in the elderly. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We estimated cognitive performance in two groups of 15 patients each among persons on old-age pensions or living in geriatric nursing homes. One group included patients who had already showed dissociative or non-dissociative chronic psychosis and the other group persons with no previous psychotic signs. Cognitive estimations were

Hallmarks of healthy cognitive aging: Inter-individual differences in aging trajectories.

Cognitive aging is a highly heterogeneous process, with some individuals preserving stable cognitive performance across the lifespan while others exhibiting pronounced decline. This marked interindividual variability indicates that chronological age alone is a poor predictor of cognitive health. Rather than reflecting uniform degeneration, cognitive aging emerges from divergent biological trajectories spanning molecular, cellular, and network levels. In this review, we synthesize emerging biological hallmarks of healthy cognitive aging, emphasizing studies that characterize longitudinal cognit

Metabolites in aging and aging-relevant diseases: Frailty, sarcopenia and cognitive decline.

Aging shows biologically complex features with high individual variability, which reflects the exposure to several stimuli and the adaptation to them. Among them, metabolic changes are well observed as consequences or possible causes of aging. Calorie restriction extends organismal life span in experimental models. Several metabolites; for example, resveratrol or nicotinamide mononucleotide, are reported to mimic calorie restriction effects in vivo. Metabolomic research would be useful to evaluate metabolites as biomarkers in aging-relevant events and to identify metabolic regulation of aging.

Neuropsychology of cognitive aging in rhesus monkeys.

Aged rhesus monkeys, like aged humans, show declines in cognitive function. We present cognitive test data from a large sample of male and female rhesus monkeys, 34 young (3.5-13.6 years) and 71 aged (19.9-32.5 years of age at the start of cognitive testing). Monkeys were tested on spatiotemporal working memory (delayed response), visual recognition memory (delayed nonmatching-to-sample), and stimulus-reward association learning (object discrimination), tasks with an extensive evidence base in nonhuman primate neuropsychology. On average, aged monkeys performed worse than young on all three ta

Aging, cognitive load, dementia and hearing loss.

Sensorineural systems play a crucial role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of several neurological disorders. The function of the eye and ear represents a unique window for testing various conditions in cognitive decline or dementia. Touch and smell have also been found to be strongly involved in neurodegenerative conditions, and their decline has been significantly associated with the progression of the disease; hence, the idea that restoring sensory function in cognitively impaired adults might enable a significant improvement in their cognitive status, reducing the worldwide incid

Prediction of brain age and cognitive age: Quantifying brain and cognitive maintenance in aging.

The concept of brain maintenance refers to the preservation of brain integrity in older age, while cognitive reserve refers to the capacity to maintain cognition in the presence of neurodegeneration or aging-related brain changes. While both mechanisms are thought to contribute to individual differences in cognitive function among older adults, there is currently no "gold standard" for measuring these constructs. Using machine-learning methods, we estimated brain and cognitive age based on deviations from normative aging patterns in the Whitehall II MRI substudy cohort (N = 537, age range = 60
