Applied cognitive psychology: Implications of cognitive psychology for clinical psychology and psychotherapy.

Cognitive psychology has made numerous contributions to clinical psychology, and these contributions are considered especially with reference to the anxiety disorders. It is argued that there are four major contributions that can be identified. First, the cognitive approach has led to the development of complex models showing the main cognitive processes and structures of relevance to an understanding of anxiety disorders. Second, controlled laboratory studies permit a more detailed investigation of cognitive biases in anxious patients than generally is feasible in more naturalistic settings.

The Return of Repression? Evidence From Cognitive Psychology.

The controversy over alleged repressed and recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) was among the most contentious ever to embroil psychology and psychiatry. Adapting paradigms from cognitive psychology, my research group tested hypotheses pertinent to repressed memory and false memory interpretations of recovered memories. We tested adults who: (1) report recovering memories of CSA after not having thought about their abuse for years; (2) report never having forgotten their CSA; (3) believe they harbor "repressed" memories of CSA; and (4) deny having been sexually abused. We tested

Ownership psychology as a cognitive adaptation: A minimalist model.

Ownership is universal and ubiquitous in human societies, yet the psychology underpinning ownership intuitions is generally not described in a coherent and computationally tractable manner. Ownership intuitions are commonly assumed to derive from culturally transmitted social norms, or from a mentally represented implicit theory. While the social norms account is entirely ad hoc, the mental theory requires prior assumptions about possession and ownership that must be explained. Here I propose such an explanation, arguing that the intuitions result from the interaction of two cognitive systems.

Dual-process theories beyond cognitive psychology: psychodynamic, clinical, and neurobiological perspectives.

Dual-process theories (DPT) have become an influential framework for understanding human cognition by distinguishing between two modes of mental processing, often described through distinctions such as automatic vs. controlled, intuitive vs. analytic, or unconscious vs. conscious. Although initially developed within cognitive psychology, this review considers DPT in relation to psychodynamic, clinical, and neurobiological perspectives to explore their complementary contributions to understanding human mental functioning. From a psychodynamic perspective, particular attention is given to primar

Cognitive profile analysis in school psychology: History, issues, and continued concerns.

Intelligence testing remains a fixture in school psychology training and practice. Despite their popularity, the use of IQ tests is not without controversy and researchers have long debated how these measures should be interpreted with children and adolescents. A controversial aspect of this debate relates to the utility of cognitive profile analysis, a class of interpretive methods that encourage practitioners to make diagnostic decisions and/or treatment recommendations based on the strengths and weaknesses observed in ability score profiles. Whereas numerous empirical studies and reviews ha

Developmental cognitive genetics: how psychology can inform genetics and vice versa.

Developmental neuropsychology is concerned with uncovering the underlying basis of developmental disorders such as specific language impairment (SLI), developmental dyslexia, and autistic disorder. Twin and family studies indicate that genetic influences play an important part in the aetiology of all of these disorders, yet progress in identifying genes has been slow. One way forward is to cut loose from conventional clinical criteria for diagnosing disorders and to focus instead on measures of underlying cognitive mechanisms. Psychology can inform genetics by clarifying what the key dimension

Cognitive reserve, physical disorders and the trajectory of psychological and cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the association between cognitive reserve (CR) and the trajectory of psycho-cognitive function, particularly the interactive effect of physical disorders (PDs). METHOD: Main analyses used data from middle-aged and older adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), with replication using data from the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Latent class analysis was applied to classify participants based on baseline CR-related factors (education, occupation, stress, social engagement, physical activities, and marriage). Cognition and psychological wellbeing in hypopituitary patients.

Hypopituitarism (HP) frequently occurs in patients presenting with sellar masses and despite recent advances in therapeutic options, HP patients consistently suffer from impaired quality of life due to psychological distress and cognitive dysfunction. These neurocognitive complications tend to persist in spite of surgical or biochemical remission of the disease making it especially challenging to segregate the effect of HP per se from other comorbidities such as the effect of tumour, surgery, radiation therapy, or complications caused by excess hormone production. Regardless, there is ample ev

Cognitive and psychological functioning in Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder which can result in renal, cardiac, and cerebrovascular disease. Patients are at increased risk of stroke and neuroimaging studies note cerebrovascular pathology. This study provides a cognitive profile of a cohort of individuals with Fabry disease and investigates the impact of pain, age, renal, cardiac, and cerebrovascular functioning on cognition and psychological functioning. Seventeen Fabry patients (12 males) with ages ranging 25 to 60 years (M = 46.6+11.8), and 15 age-matched healthy controls (M = 46.2+12.7) were administered a com

[Cognitive and psychological profiles in dysmorphic syndromes].

The recognizable patterns of human malformations have recently received much attention, particularly because of the decline of other diseases. Patients with a congenital malformation syndrome come to the Child Neuropsychiatrist for various reasons, such as: mental retardation of variable degree, learning disabilities, speech delay or absence of speech, behaviour disorders, various neurological impairment. Parents, however, seem to be mainly concerned about the prognosis of cognitive and psychological aspects. We have studied 83 patients with a specific pattern of malformations (35 affected by

The psychology of user reliance on anthropomorphic robots: Affective dissonance, cognitive load, and enactive sense-making.

Guided by Enactive Cognition Theory, this study examines how enacted anthropomorphism relates to users' reliance on service robots through affective dissonance and cognitive load. A sequential mixed-method design comprised a pilot phase for construct refinement, a quantitative study of 311 users with prior service-robot experience using structural equation modeling, and a post-hoc qualitative study with 19 hospitality industry professionals. Results show that enacted anthropomorphism is positively associated with reliance and negatively associated with affective dissonance, while unexpectedly

Comparing the acceptability of a positive psychology intervention versus a cognitive behavioural therapy for clinical depression.

There is growing evidence on the efficacy of positive psychology interventions (PPI) to treat clinical disorders. However, very few studies have addressed their acceptability. The present study aimed to analyse 2 key components of acceptability (i.e., client satisfaction and adherence to treatment) of a new PPI programme, the Integrative Positive Psychological Intervention for Depression (IPPI-D), in comparison to a standard cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) programme in the treatment of clinical depression. One hundred twenty-eight women with a DSM-IV diagnosis of major depression or dysthy

Sluggish cognitive tempo in abnormal child psychology: an historical overview and introduction to the special section.

There has recently been a resurgence of interest in Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) as an important construct in the field of abnormal child psychology. Characterized by drowsiness, daydreaming, lethargy, mental confusion, and slowed thinking/behavior, SCT has primarily been studied as a feature of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and namely the predominately inattentive subtype/presentation. Although SCT is strongly associated with ADHD inattention, research increasingly supports the possibility that SCT is distinct from ADHD or perhaps a different mental health condition altog

From Cognitive Restructuring to Spiritual Purification: A Theoretical Synthesis of the Transactional Model and Islamic Psychology.

BACKGROUND: In mental health nursing practice, the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping developed by Lazarus and Folkman is widely used as the primary framework for stress management. However, developments in the literature indicate that in conditions of severe stress and existential crisis, particularly when stressors are immutable, purely secular cognitive restructuring approaches may be complemented by incorporating spiritual dimensions. Conceptual studies on meaning-making emphasise that efforts to search for meaning that do not lead to resolution can instead develop into rumination an

[Social inequity, cognitive impairment and psychological vulnerability].

Frailty cannot be understood solely as a physical impairment. It is often closely linked to social inequity, cognitive impairment, and psychological vulnerability. These factors both contribute to frailty and are exacerbated by it, and together they influence overall mortality. This review calls for a holistic perspective when caring for individuals with frailty. Systematic approaches, such as proactive home visits and structured assessments using tools like the Clinical Frailty Scale and the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, may improve the identification and understanding of frailty.

Physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity: a narrative review.

Physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity (PPC-MM) is a distinct phenotype in older adults, defined as the coexistence of chronic physical conditions, psychological disorders, and cognitive impairment. When all three domains are present, the adverse impact on patients may be greater than that associated with single diseases or physical multimorbidity alone. This review delineates operational definitions of PPC-MM across major cohort studies, summarizes global epidemiological characteristics, and synthesizes evidence on multi-level risk factors. Chinese older adults have a PPC-MM prevalen

[The current conception of the unconscious - empirical results of neurobiology, cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research].

The influence of the unconscious on psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy: a comprehensive concept of unconscious processes based on empirical evidence. The theory of the Unconscious constitutes the basis of psychoanalysis and of psychodynamic therapy. The traditional description of the Unconscious as given by Freud is of historical significance and not only gained widespread acceptance but also attracted much criticism. The most important findings of neurobiology, the cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research in relation to the Unconscious are compared with this traditiona

Positive Psychology Interventions in Early-Stage Cognitive Decline Related to Dementia: A Systematic Review of Cognitive and Brain Functioning Outcomes of Mindfulness Interventions.

Background: Dementia is a global condition affecting over 55 million people. Since there is no treatment, non-pharmacological interventions aim to delay its progression in a safe and cost-effective way. The extant literature suggests that Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) can probably be effective for this purpose. The systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of PPIs as non-pharmacological interventions for mild cognitive decline related to dementia by evaluating their effectiveness in cognitive functions and brain functioning in people with Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD),
