Montreal cognitive assessment reflects cognitive reserve.

BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is known to have discriminative power for patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Recently Cognitive Reserve (CR) has been introduced as a factor that compensates cognitive decline. We aimed to assess whether the MoCA reflects CR. Furthermore, we assessed whether there were any differences in the efficacy between the MoCA and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in reflecting CR. METHODS: MoCA, MMSE, and the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq) were administered to 221 healthy participants. Normative data and associated f

Testing the Foreign Language Effect on Cognitive Reflection in Older Adults.

An increasing number of people around the world communicate in more than one language, resulting in them having to make decisions in a foreign language on a daily basis. Interestingly, a burgeoning body of literature suggests that people's decision-making is affected by whether they are reasoning in their native language (NL) or their foreign language (FL). According to the foreign language effect (FLe), people are less susceptible to bias in many decision-making tasks and more likely to display utilitarian cost-benefit analysis in moral decision-making when reasoning in a FL. While these diff

[Cognition and reflection on the "lateral ligament of rectum"].

As total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer is widely carried out in China, lateral ligament of rectum, as an important anatomical structure of the lateral rectum with certain anatomical value and clinical significance, has been the focus of attention. In this paper, by comparing and analyzing the characteristics about ligaments of the abdomen and pelvis, reviewing the membrane anatomy and the theory of primitive gut rotation, and combining clinical observations and histological studies, the author came to a conclusion that lateral ligament of rectum does not exist, but is only a rela

[Reflections on the relationship between psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience].

Despite their distinct theoretical and methodological frameworks, the two fields - psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience - nevertheless converge on the idea that a large part of psychological functioning eludes consciousness. While psychoanalysis conceives of the unconscious as dynamic, conflict-ridden, and meaningful, neuroscience views it as a set of non-conscious neural processes. Parallels are drawn between cognitive psychology, relational neuroscience, and psychoanalysis.

Association of Self-reflection With Cognition and Brain Health in Cognitively Unimpaired Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Self-reflection (the active evaluation of ones thoughts, feelings, and behaviors) can confer protection against adverse health outcomes. Its effect on markers sensitive to Alzheimer disease (AD), however, is unknown. The primary objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between self-reflection and AD-sensitive markers. METHODS: This study used baseline data from cognitively unimpaired older adults enrolled in the Age-Well clinical trial and older adults with subjective cognitive decline from the SCD-Well clinical trial. In both cohorts,

Delusion proneness in nonclinical individuals and cognitive insight: the contributions of rumination and reflection.

Although previous research demonstrates that clinical individuals with delusions score low on one of the facets of cognitive insight, self-reflection, and high on the other facet, self-certainty, analogous studies of delusion proneness in nonclinical individuals have found that delusion proneness in nonclinical individuals associates with higher levels of both self-certainty and self-reflection. The present study sought to reconcile these inconsistent results by examining the contributions of different facets of self-reflection, rumination and reflection, to delusion proneness. One hundred fif

Ratios of CSF proteins reflect cognitive function in ALS.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a recognised feature of neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Despite advances in understanding cognitive impairment in ALS, no fluid biomarkers reliably predict these changes. Prior research in Alzheimer disease (AD) has demonstrated that CSF protein ratios enhance biomarker accuracy by mitigating inter-individual variability, improving diagnostic precision. In AD, ratios involving synaptic markers have shown stronger associations with cognitive outcomes than single proteins, motivating evaluation of a similar ratio-base

Hierarchical organization of cognition reflected in distributed frontoparietal activity.

Organization of behavior into a nested hierarchy of tasks and subtasks is characteristic of purposive cognition in humans. While frontoparietal regions have been shown to represent many kinds of task events, their representation of task/subtask structure has not been directly investigated. On each trial of the current study, participants carried out a sequence of four visual target detections organized by task context into subtasks of different structure (three and one or two and two). Through extended regions of frontoparietal cortex, activity elicited by target detections depended upon the h

Enhancing Cognitive Reflection in Medical Trainees and Physicians: An EBM-CBL-PBL Integrated Teaching Model.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient cognitive reflection in medical trainees and early-career physicians is a root cause of diagnostic errors, yet research on enhancing cognitive reflection in complex surgical settings remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether an integrated evidence-based medicine, case-based learning, and problem-based learning (EBM-CBL-PBL) teaching model can improve cognitive reflection. METHODS: A two-phase design was employed. Cognitive reflection was assessed using the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT). A generalized linear mixed model analyzed associations between sex,

Seeking the Category: The Pragmatic Function of Formal Explanations and the Role of Cognitive Reflection.

Formal explanations are statements that explain properties of an object by referring to its category. This study investigates the role of pragmatics in the evaluation of formal explanations. Across six experiments, we examined how a questioner's knowledge of category identity and an explanation's capability to specify a category affect satisfaction with such explanations. Experiments 1a and 1b demonstrate that participants find formal explanations less satisfactory when the questioner is already aware of the category identity. Experiments 2a and 2b show that participants assumed a questioner w

Politics in psychiatry and psychotherapis in Japan with personal reflection; Is cognitive behavior therapy non-political?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is often presented as a technically neutral, evidence-based psychotherapy. This article questions that assumption by examining the political, institutional, and cultural contexts that have shaped psychiatry and psychotherapies in Japan, integrating historical review, administrative data, cross-national comparison, and personal reflection. First, the postwar development of Japanese psychiatry is reviewed, focusing on gradual mental health reform following the WHO "Clark Recommendation" and the politicized professional climate of the late 1960s and 1970s. Secon

Repetitive negative thinking, self-reflection, and perceived cognitive dysfunction in older adults: a cross-sectional study.

As the global population ages, understanding cognitive dysfunction, including Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia, is crucial. With the growing prevalence of these disorders, it is essential to identify and understand potential factors that maintain cognitive function and potentially delay severe cognitive dysfunction. This study examined the roles of repetitive negative thinking (RNT) and reflection in subjective cognitive dysfunction among older adults, with an additional consideration of their association with depressive symptoms. RNT, which is common in depression, has been ass

Spatial variation of perfusion MRI reflects cognitive decline in mild cognitive impairment and early dementia.

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) measured with arterial spin labelling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reflects cerebral perfusion, related to metabolism, and arterial transit time (ATT), related to vascular health. Our aim was to investigate the spatial coefficient of variation (sCoV) of CBF maps as a surrogate for ATT, in volunteers meeting criteria for subjective cognitive decline (SCD), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and probable Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Whole-brain pseudo continuous ASL MRI was performed at 3 T in 122 participants (controls = 20, SCD = 44, MCI = 45 and AD = 13

Introducing the Strategic Scripting, Repetitive Practice, Reflection, and Debriefing Model: Evolution of Cognitive Rehearsal to Address Incivility.

BACKGROUND: Incivility in nursing remains a pervasive and complex issue that undermines nurse well-being, team functioning, and patient safety. For two decades, cognitive rehearsal (CR) has served as a foundational evidence-based strategy to help nurses mitigate uncivil behaviors. METHOD: Traditional CR relies on linear, scripted responses and may not fully prepare nurses for the dynamic, unpredictable, and high-stakes nuances of real-world academic and health care work environments. The author reconceptualizes CR as a rigorous, experiential process and introduces scenario-based simulation wi

Cognitive variation reflects amyloid, tau, and neurodegenerative biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease.

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), the accumulation of neuropathological markers such as amyloid-β plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and cortical neurodegeneration occurs over many years before overt manifestation of cognitive impairment. There is thus a need for neuropsychological markers that are indicative of pathological changes in the early stages of the disease. Intra-individual cognitive variability (IICV), defined as the variation of an individual's performance across cognitive domains, is a promising neuropsychological marker measuring heterogeneous changes in cognition that may reflect the

Altered communication dynamics reflect cognitive deficits in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Although temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is recognized as a system-level disorder, little work has investigated pathoconnectomics from a dynamic perspective. By leveraging computational simulations that quantify patterns of information flow across the connectome, we tested the hypothesis that network communication is abnormal in this condition, studied the interplay between hippocampal- and network-level disease effects, and assessed associations with cognition. METHODS: We simulated signal spreading via a linear threshold model that temporally evolves on a structural graph derived fr
