BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is known to have discriminative power for patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Recently Cognitive Reserve (CR) has been introduced as a factor that compensates cognitive decline. We aimed to assess whether the MoCA reflects CR. Furthermore, we assessed whether there were any differences in the efficacy between the MoCA and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in reflecting CR.
METHODS: MoCA, MMSE, and the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq) were administered to 221 healthy participants. Normative data and associated f

Cognitive reserve explains why those with higher IQ, education, occupational attainment, or participation in leisure activities evidence less severe clinical or cognitive changes in the presence of age-related or Alzheimer's disease pathology. Specifically, the cognitive reserve hypothesis is that individual differences in how tasks are processed provide reserve against brain pathology. Cognitive reserve may allow for more flexible strategy usage, an ability thought to be captured by executive functions tasks. Additionally, cognitive reserve allows individuals greater neural efficiency, greate

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) explains the individual resilience to neurodegeneration. Years of formal education express the static measure of reserve (sCR). A dynamic aspect of CR (dCR) has been recently proposed.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare sCR and dCR indexes, respectively, to detect brain abnormalities in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients.
METHODS: 117 individuals [39 AD, 40 amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), 38 healthy subjects (HS)] underwent neuropsychological evaluation and a 3T-MRI. T1-weighted volumes were used for manual segmentation of the hippocam

Huntington disease (HD) is associated with decline in cognition and progressive morphological changes in brain structures. Cognitive reserve may represent a mechanism by which disease-related decline may be delayed or slowed. The current study examined the relationship between cognitive reserve and longitudinal change in cognitive functioning and brain volumes among prodromal (gene expansion-positive) HD individuals. Participants were genetically confirmed individuals with prodromal HD enrolled in the PREDICT-HD study. Cognitive reserve was computed as the composite of performance on a lexical

A hypothetical construct of "cognitive reserve" is widely used to explain how, in the face of neurodegenerative changes that are similar in nature and extent, individuals vary considerably in the severity of cognitive aging and clinical dementia. Intelligence, education and occupational level are believed to be major active components of cognitive reserve. Here, we summarize the main features of cognitive aging and their neuropathological correlates. We describe the neurobiology of cognitive aging and conclude that perturbations of neural health attributable to oxidative stress and inflammator

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular coupling (NVC) impairment contributes to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but its relationship with NVC in MCI remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the associations between CR, NVC, and cognition in MCI patients, and to clarify their potential correlational patterns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 113 MCI and 83 healthy controls, all undergoing resting-state fMRI and arterial spin labeling to calculate CBF/neural activity ratios (ALFF, fALFF, ReHo, DC) as NVC measures. Cognitive reserve was assessed using the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire.

High levels of education, occupational complexity, and/or premorbid intelligence are associated with lower levels of cognitive impairment than would be expected from a given brain pathology. This has been observed across a range of conditions including Alzheimer's disease (Roe et al., 2010), stroke (Ojala-Oksala et al., 2012), traumatic brain injury (Kesler et al., 2003), and penetrating brain injury (Grafman, 1986). This cluster of factors, which seemingly protect the brain from expressing symptoms of damage, has been termed "cognitive reserve" (Stern, 2012). The current review considers one

OBJECTIVE: Brain reserve, cognitive reserve, and education are thought to protect against late-life cognitive decline, but these variables have not been directly compared to one another in the same model, using future cognitive and functional decline as outcomes. We sought to determine whether the influence of these protective factors on executive function (EF) and daily function decline was dependent upon Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology severity, as measured by the total tau to beta-amyloid (T-τ/Aβ1-42) ratio in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed inconsistent results for the correlation between cognitive reserve (CR) and cognitive function in Parkinson's disease (PD). Additionally, conflicting results were obtained for the association between CR and risk of longitudinal cognitive decline, longitudinal progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and longitudinal progression to dementia in PD patients.
OBJECTIVES: Thus, a meta-analysis is essential to summary these inconsistent results.
METHODS: Articles published before November 2021 were searched in databases as follows: PubMed, Web of Science,

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing evidence of persistent cognitive dysfunction after COVID-19, the role of cognitive reserve as a modifying factor of post-infectious neurocognitive outcomes remains insufficiently explored, particularly in relation to disease severity and premorbid lifestyle characteristics.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of cognitive reserve in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection and to assess its impact on the structure and severity of post-COVID cognitive impairments.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 247 patients aged 31-67 years who had recovered from CO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence on the association of cognitive reserve (CR) with the cognitive trajectories is limited. We aimed to examine the influence of CR indicator on domain-specific cognitive trajectories taking brain pathologies into account.
METHODS: Within the Rush Memory and Aging Project, 1,697 participants without dementia (mean age 79.6 years) were followed up to 21 years. CR indicator encompassing education, early-life, mid-life, and late-life cognitive activities and late-life social activity was ascertained at baseline and categorized as tertiles (lowest, middle, and hig

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the association between cognitive reserve (CR) and the trajectory of psycho-cognitive function, particularly the interactive effect of physical disorders (PDs).
METHOD: Main analyses used data from middle-aged and older adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), with replication using data from the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Latent class analysis was applied to classify participants based on baseline CR-related factors (education, occupation, stress, social engagement, physical activities, and marriage). BACKGROUND: The oldest-old (aged ≥85 years) are the fastest growing age group, with the highest risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. This study investigated whether cognitive reserve applies to the oldest-old. This has implications for cognitive interventions in this age group.
METHODS: Baseline and 5-year follow-up data from the Newcastle 85+ Study were used (N = 845, mean age = 85.5, 38% male). A Cognitive Reserve Index (CRI) was created, including: education, social class, marital status, engagement in mental activities, social participation, and physical activity. Global (Mini-Menta

ObjectiveCognitive reserve (CR) is the capacity to adapt to (future) brain damage without any or only minimal clinical symptoms. The underlying neuroplastic mechanisms remain unclear. Electrocorticography (ECOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) may help elucidate the brain mechanisms underlying CR, as CR is thought to be related to efficient utilization of remaining brain resources. The purpose of this systematic review is to collect, evaluate, and synthesize the findings on neural correlates of CR estimates using ECOG, EEG, and MEG.MethodWe examined articles tha

Despite the large number of elderly bilinguals at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia worldwide, significant questions remain about the relationship between speaking more than one language and later cognitive decline. Bilingualism may impact on cognitive and neural reserve, time of onset of dementia symptoms and neuropathology, and linguistic competency in dementia. This review indicates increased cognitive reserve from executive (monitoring, selecting, inhibiting) control of two languages and increased neural reserve involving left frontal and related areas for language control. BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) is increasingly recognized as a factor associated with cognitive outcomes in neurological diseases; however, its relevance in patients undergoing brain tumor surgery remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between CR, particularly leisure-related CR, postoperative cognitive outcomes, and white matter tract disconnection.
METHODS: Forty patients in the chronic postoperative phase following supratentorial brain tumor resection were evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Japanese Adult Reading
