A women's birth cohort effect on malformation rates.

A relatively sudden increase in prevalence at birth of gastroschisis was seen in Sweden at the beginning of the 1970s. Case-control studies, looking for a teratogenic factor, have proved negative. This paper presents a hypothesis suggesting that the women's birth cohort has an effect: women born in 1953-5 have an increased probability of having this type of malformed infants. A computer simulation is made indicating that the actually recorded facts can, at least in part, be explained by the hypothesis.

Melanosis coli: a contrast effect or an oncogenic effect? A large-scale retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Melanosis coli is characterized by brown mucosa with pigmentation. Studies have showed an increased adenoma detection rate in melanosis patients, whether it is caused by a contrast effect or an oncogenic effect is still controversial. The detection of serrated polys in melanosis patients remains unknown. AIMS: The study aimed to clarify the correlation of adenoma detection rate with melanosis coli and discuss outcomes in less-experienced endoscopists. Serrated polyp detection rate was also been investigated. METHODS: A total of 2150 patients and 39,630 controls were enrolled. A p

Cohort profile: effect of malaria in early pregnancy on fetal growth in Benin (RECIPAL preconceptional cohort).

PURPOSE: REtard de Croissance Intra-uterin et PALudisme (RECIPAL) is an original preconceptional cohort designed to assess the consequences of malaria during the first trimester of pregnancy, which is a poorly investigated period in Africa and during which malaria may be detrimental to the fetus. PARTICIPANTS: For this purpose, a total of 1214 women of reproductive age living in Sô-Ava and Akassato districts (south Benin) were followed up monthly from June 2014 to December 2016 until 411 of them became pregnant. A large range of health determinants was collected both before and during pregnan

The unseen sample in cohort studies: estimation of its size and effect. Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study.

Recruitment of disease-free subjects into cohort studies and measurement of their time from exposure/infection to disease selectively excludes individuals (the unseen sample) who had earlier exposure and who have shorter times to disease. The unseen and observed samples may differ in other characteristics in addition to incubation period and exposure/infection time. For data with known truncation times, we develop non-parametric maximum likelihood estimates of the size, exposure/infection dates and distribution of incubation time in the unseen sample. We provide procedures to estimate and comp

The weekend effect in status epilepticus: a national cohort study.

Higher mortality following admission to hospital at the weekend has been reported for several conditions. It is unclear whether this variation is due to differences in patients or their care. Status epilepticus mandates hospital admission and usually critical care: its study might provide new insights into the nature of any weekend effect. We studied 20,922 adults admitted to UK critical care with status epilepticus from 2010 to 2015. We used multiple logistic regression to evaluate the association between weekend admission and in-hospital mortality, comparing university hospitals with other h

A cohort effect on serum testosterone levels in Finnish men.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a population-level decline in serum testosterone exists in Finnish men. In comparison with other European populations, Finnish men have compared well in the studies of reproductive health (i.e. semen quality, incidence of cryptorchidism and testicular cancer); thus, we expected no significant cohort-dependent decrease in serum testosterone. METHODS: We analysed serum levels of testosterone, gonadotrophin and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in 3271 men representing different ages (25-74 years) and birth cohorts within three large Finnish population surveys

Birth cohort effect on latent tuberculosis infection prevalence, United States.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) prevalence in the United States decreased approximately 60% in the three decades between the 1971-1972 and 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) surveys. We examined the effects of birth cohort on LTBI prevalence over time. METHODS: Using weighted data analysis software to account for NHANES survey design, we calculated the difference in LTBI prevalence between 1971-1972 and 1999-2000 for birth cohorts corresponding to 5-year intervals (1912-1916, 1917-1921,1922-1926, 1927-1931, 1932-1936, 1937-1941, 1942-1946). Effect of maternal age on pregnancy: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the last few decades, there has been a delay in first-time pregnancies, and the average age of women at the time of delivery has increased in many countries. Advanced maternal age is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to determine the present trends and pregnancy outcomes related to maternal age in China. METHODS: Data were collected from 39 hospitals in mainland of China. All deliveries were performed after 28 completed weeks of gestation and between January 1 and December 31, 2011. In total, 110 450 of 112 441 cases were included in the study. All en

Pertussis resurgence in Canada largely caused by a cohort effect.

BACKGROUND: Beginning in 1990 Canada experienced a resurgence of pertussis. Changes in incidence and hospitalization according to age in the province of Quebec between 1983 and 1998 were examined to assess the presence of a cohort effect resulting from a poorly protective vaccine. METHODS: The source of data on incident cases was pertussis notifications to the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services. Hospitalization data were extracted from the administrative database that collects information on each hospitalization. RESULTS: The mean annual incidence before 1990 was 3.8 cases per 100

High mortality in the Thule cohort: an unhealthy worker effect.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to study mortality in the Thule cohort in order to clarify whether it is a selected population and to ascertain the possibility of misinterpretation when national mortality rates are used as reference in the analysis of occupational mortality. METHODS: The cohort consists of 4322 Danish men who were employed between 1963 and 1971 at the Thule air base in Greenland. One part of the cohort were employed during the clean-up period after the crash, in 1968, of a US bomber carrying nuclear weapons, the other part had been employed only outside the clean-up period. Effect of Orthostatic Tremor on Quality of Life - a Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic tremor (OT) is characterized by a lower extremity tremor causing unsteadiness while standing, urging patients to lean, walk, or sit to ease symptoms. This severely disrupts daily life and reduces quality of life (QoL), though the extent of QoL impairment remains largely unknown. The objective of this cohort study was to evaluate the effect of OT on daily functioning and well-being over time. METHODS: In this prospective single-center and community based cohort study, OT patients annually completed self-report scales from 2018 to 2024, including the Dutch OT-questionnai

Effects of spirometry standards in two occupational cohorts.

Characteristics of subjects with nonreproducible lung function tests (test failures) are described in two studies of occupational respiratory disease. According to current guidelines for spirometry, subjects with test failure are excluded from analyses of epidemiologic pulmonary function data. Among 415 Chinese cotton textile workers, the prevalence of byssinosis was 5.8% for subjects with repeatable tests and 13.3% for subjects with test failure. In regression analysis, the estimate of the association between cotton dust exposure and FEV1 decreased when subjects with test failure were exclude

Cohort Effects in Progression Rate on Cognitive and Functional Measures in an Alzheimer's Disease Clinical Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of Alzheimer's disease (AD) cognitive and functional outcomes in clinical research requires consistent underlying rates of change over time. OBJECTIVE: To examine cohort effects in AD progression rate over five years of follow-up using a clinical database of probable AD patients. METHODS: Baseline characteristics of three cohorts enrolled from 1995-1999, 2000-2004, and 2005-2009 were compared using ANOVA and chi-square tests. Differences in 5-year decline on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS
