Immersion Frequency Optimisation and Species-Specific Metabolic Profiles of Colchicum autumnale and Colchicum bivonae in Temporary Immersion Systems.

Temporary immersion systems (TISs) are an advanced biotechnological platform for the large-scale cultivation of medicinal plants and the consistent production of high-value secondary metabolites. In this study, we evaluated three immersion regimes with stand-by periods of 4, 8, or 12 h, each paired with a 15-minute immersion period, to optimise shoot growth and colchicine accumulation in Colchicum autumnale L. and Colchicum bivonae Guss. The 4 h stand-by/15 min immersion regime yielded the highest growth index (C. autumnale: 0.75 ± 0.08; C. bivonae: 1.25 ± 0.03) and maximum colchicine content

Colchicum Genus in the Writings of Ancient Greek and Byzantine Physicians.

The plants of the Colchicum family were known during the archaic period in Greece for their deleterious properties. Later on, they were used for the treatment of podagra. The treatment was introduced by the ancient Greek physicians and passed on to the Byzantine and Arabian physicians to endure until nowadays. The first plant was most probably named "Medea" from the notorious Colchican witch. As the most common member of the family blossoms in autumn, the plant was named Colchicum autumnale. Various nominations were also used, such as Ephemeron, Hermodactyl, Anima articulorum and Surugen. Our

Colchicum autumnale poisoning in a dairy farm in Switzerland: a glimpse at the milk safety aspect.

Colchicine poisoning in livestock presents a significant challenge for dairy farming, particularly in regions where Colchicum autumnale (autumn crocus) is prevalent in pastures. This case report describes an incident on an organic dairy farm in Eastern Switzerland where Brown Swiss cattle showed clinical signs after consuming freshly mown meadow forage containing autumn crocus leaves. The ingestion of this highly toxic plant led to severe effects such as apathy, hypothermia, and reduced milk production, which required immediate veterinary intervention. As colchicine was expected to be secreted

MDR1 gene polymorphisms may be associated with Behçet's disease and its colchicum treatment response.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multisystem disorder. Infectious agents, immune system mechanisms, and genetic factors are implicated in the etiopathogenesis of BD, which remains to be explained. The human MDR1 (ABCB1) gene encoder P-glycoprotein (P-gp) plays a key role in drug disposition, serves as a protective mechanism against xenobiotics, and provides additional protection for the brain, testis, and fetus. We investigated the genotype and haplotype distributions of three MDR1 gene polymorphisms (C1236T, G2677T/A, and C3435T) in 104 BD patients and 130 control subjects. The genotyping a

Colchicine poisoning by accidental ingestion of meadow saffron (Colchicum autumnale): pathological and medicolegal aspects.

Although intoxications with colchicine, the alkaloid of Colchicum autumnale (meadow saffron), are well known, in most cases the intoxications are evoked by oral or parenteral preparations traditionally used as medication against gout. The accidental ingestion of Colchicum autumnale, on the other hand, is a rare event and has to our knowledge only twice been described in detail. We report a further case in which two persons confused this highly poisonous plant with wild garlic (Allium ursinum), a popular spice in the Central European cuisine. While one person merely complained about a 3-day epi

Successful Management of Accidental Colchicine Intoxication After Ingestion of Colchicum autumnale: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 58-year-old man who experienced moderate renal and liver impairment after accidental poisoning with Colchicum autumnale, which he confused with wild garlic (Allium ursinum). Colchicum autumnale contains colchicine, a toxic compound that disrupts cell division. The patient received intensive care therapy, intravenous lipid emulsion, vitamin K supplementation, and N-acetylcysteine replacement. After seven days of hospitalisation, he was discharged in good health. This case highlights the importance of patients presenting at the emergency department with uncertain anamnesi

Histopathological study of experimental acute poisoning of cattle by autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale L.).

Crude or dehydrated bulbs of autumn crocus (Colchicum autumnale L.) were fed to eleven calves. All the calves developed severe diarrhea and died or euthanized within 63 hr. At necropsy, the gastro-intestinal mucosa was edematous and hemorrhagic. Histologically, necrosis and degeneration with karyopyknosis and karyorrhexis were shown in the basal cell layer of the tongue, esophagus, forestomach, renal pelvis, urinary bladder, neck cell layer of the abomasal gastric glands, and intestinal cryps. These findings were also seen in Kupffer cells, renal tubular epithelial cells, and lymphocytes in th

Phytochemical, Cytoprotective Profiling, and Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Colchicum luteum in Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Experimental and Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by severe pain, inflammation, and joint deformity. Currently, it affects 1% of the population, with a projection to exceed 23 million cases by 2030. Despite significant advancements, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the first line of treatment, are associated with a range of adverse effects. Consequently, plant-based derivatives are being utilized as an effective alternative. This study evaluates the anti-inflammatory and safety profile of Colchicum luteum hydroethanolic extract (CLHE) in compar

Sodium alginate-encapsulated Colchicum nanoparticles attenuate TNF-α and NF-κB signaling in macrophages: A novel therapeutic strategy for rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease driven by macrophage activation and pro-inflammatory signaling, particularly via TNF-α and NF-κB pathways. Current therapies, including methotrexate and biologic agents, provide clinical benefits but are limited by systemic toxicity, high costs, and treatment resistance. Here, we report the development of sodium alginate (SA)-encapsulated nanoparticles incorporating Colchicum micranthum (CM) and Colchicum chalcedonicum (CC) extracts as a novel therapeutic approach for RA. Phytochemical profiling revealed distinct polyphenolic signatures

Histological Features Detected for Separation of the Edible Leaves of Allium ursinum L. from the Poisonous Leaves of Convallaria majalis L. and Colchicum autumnale L.

Allium ursinum (wild garlic) has long been collected and consumed as food and medicine in the north temperate zone, where its popularity is growing. Colchicum autumnale and Convallaria majalis contain toxic alkaloids. Their habitats overlap, and without flowers, their vegetative organs are similar. Confusing the leaves of Colchicum or Convallaria with the leaves of wild garlic has repeatedly led to serious human and animal poisonings. Our goal was to find a histological characteristic that makes the separation of these leaves clear. We compared the anatomy of foliage leaves of these three spec
