Cold temperatures, stress, and violence.

The relation between temperature and violence was found in many studies. However, the results of such studies demonstrated only that uncomfortably hot temperatures increase violence. There seem to be no data on the effect of cold temperatures. We studied the relation between temperature and violence for the Russian Federation because the Russian Federation is a country with huge climatic differences. Two types of the analysis of the data were applied. In Analysis 1 average yearly temperatures were used. For violent crimes a decrease in temperature resulted in the increase of the crimes after t

Finger and toe temperatures on exposure to cold water and cold air.

INTRODUCTION: Subjects with a weak cold-induced vasodilatation response (CIVD) to experimental cold-water immersion of the fingers in a laboratory setting have been shown to have a higher risk for local cold injuries when exposed to cold in real life. Most of the cold injuries in real life, however, occur in the foot in cold air rather than in the hand in cold water. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to investigate the within-subject relation between CIVD in the fingers and toes exposed to cold water and cold air. METHODS: In 4 experimental sessions, 11 healthy male subjects immersed the

Facial cold-induced vasodilation and skin temperature during exposure to cold wind.

One purpose of this study was to characterize the facial skin temperature and cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response of 12 subjects (six males and six females) during exposure to cold wind (i.e., -10 to 10 degrees C; 2, 5, and 8 m/s wind speed). This study found that at each wind speed, facial skin temperature decreased as ambient temperature decreased. The percentage of subjects showing facial CIVD decreased significantly at an ambient temperature above -10 degrees C. A similar CIVD percentage was observed between 0 degrees C dry and 10 degrees C wet (face sprayed with fine water mist) at

Core Temperature during Cold-Water Triathlon Swimming.

Triathlon and other endurance races have grown in popularity. Although participants are generally fit and presumably healthy, there is measurable morbidity and mortality associated with participation. In triathlon, most deaths occur during the swim leg, and more insight into risk factors, such as hypothermia, is warranted. In this study, we measured the core temperature of 51 participants who ingested temperature sensor capsules before the swim leg of a full-distance triathlon. The water temperature was 14.4-16.4 °C, and the subjects wore wetsuits. One subject with a low body mass index and a

Urinary responses to cold temperature during water immersion.

If cold temperature combines with ambient water pressure to stimulate the Henry-Gauer reflex in humans, then free water clearance (CH2O) should be greater during immersion in cold water (29.8 degrees C) than during exposure to cold air (14.8 degrees C) or immersion in thermoneutral water (35 degrees C). Urinary responses to these environments were compared with control measurements made during 6 h of sitting in thermoneutral air (27.6 degrees C). CH2O was not significantly greater in cold water than in the other environments. Rather, the diuretic response was characterized by an increased osmo

The cold truth: Myocardial temperatures and graft function achieved with cold static storage.

We aimed to investigate myocardial temperatures of allografts after removal from cold static storage (CSS) and the relationship between temperature and early outcomes of heart transplantation (HT). Between January and September 2024, 22 allografts preserved with CSS underwent prospective temperature measurements at the left ventricular free wall (LVFW) and interventricular septum; preservation solution temperatures were also measured. Median LVFW temperature was 4.0°C, septal temperature was 3.9°C, and solution temperature was 3.7°C. LVFW and septal temperatures were significantly correlated (

[Temperature profile in the enamel during cold tests].

The temperatures on the surface of human teeth during pulp vitality tests with frigen and carbon dioxide snow were recorded in an in vitro study. Frigen spray caused particularly rapid changes in temperature. The lowest temperature (-52 degrees C) was measured with CO2-snow (with a pressure of 9.81 N against the tooth surface). To obtain higher temperatures at lower rates of change, the use of a thin latex fingerstall proved to be effective.

Blowing Hot and Cold: Body Temperature and the Microbiome.

The intestinal microbiome influences host health, and its responsiveness to diet and disease is increasingly well studied. However, our understanding of the factors driving microbiome variation remain limited. Temperature is a core factor that controls microbial growth, but its impact on the microbiome remains to be fully explored. Although commonly assumed to be a constant 37°C, normal body temperatures vary across the animal kingdom, while individual body temperature is affected by multiple factors, including circadian rhythm, age, environmental temperature stress, and immune activation. Finger and Toe Temperature Responses to Cold After Freezing Cold Injury in Elite Alpinists.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether previous freezing cold injuries (FCI) would affect digit skin temperatures and rewarming rates during a follow-up cold stress test protocol. DESIGN: Nonrandomized control trial. METHODS: Twenty elite alpinists participated; alpinists with previous FCI requiring digit amputations (injured, INJ: n = 10 total, n = 8 male) were compared with ability-matched, uninjured alpinists (control, CON: n = 10, all male). Digit skin temperature was measured using infrared thermography as an index of peripheral digit perfusion after a cold stress test, which consisted of 30 minu

How cold is too cold? Establishing the minimum water temperature limits for marathon swim racing.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a rationale for minimum water temperature rules for elite and subelite marathon swim racing and highlight factors that make individuals vulnerable to excessive cooling during open water swimming. METHODS: 12 lean competitive swimmers swam for up to 2 hours, three times in different water temperatures between 14°C and 20°C, wearing standard swimming costumes and hats. Rectal temperature (Tre), oxygen consumption, perception of cold and performance were measured. RESULTS: In 16°C, half the swimmers did not complete a 2-hour swim; four became (or were predicted to become)

Effects of early feed restriction and cold temperature on lipid peroxidation, pulmonary vascular remodelling and ascites morbidity in broilers under normal and cold temperature.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of early feed restriction on lipid peroxidation, pulmonary vascular remodelling and ascites incidence in broilers under normal and low ambient temperature. In experiment 1, the restricted birds were fed 8h per day either from 7 to 14 d or from 7 to 21 d, while the controlled birds were fed ad libitum. In experiment 2, the restricted birds were fed 80 or 60% of the previous 24-h feed consumption of full-fed controls for 7 d from 7 to 14 d. On d 14, half of the birds in each treatment both in experiment 1 and experiment 2 were exposed to low

The influence of cold temperature on cellular excitability of hippocampal networks.

The hippocampus plays an important role in short term memory, learning and spatial navigation. A characteristic feature of the hippocampal region is its expression of different electrical population rhythms and activities during different brain states. Physiological fluctuations in brain temperature affect the activity patterns in hippocampus, but the underlying cellular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this work, we investigated the thermal modulation of hippocampal activity at the cellular network level. Primary cell cultures of mouse E17 hippocampus displayed robust network activation u

Dissociation of temperature-gradient and evaporative heat loss during cold gas hyperventilation in cold-induced asthma.

We examined temperature-gradient and evaporative energy losses during cold gas inhalation challenges in patients with exercise-induced asthma by using gases with similar water-carrying capacities but significantly different volume heat capacities. Seven subjects were asked to hyperventilate mixtures of 80% helium/20% oxygen (HeO2) or 80% sulfur hexafluoride/20% oxygen (SF6O2) for 5 min at a fixed target minute ventilation of 20 x FEV1 and an inspired gas temperature of 0 degrees C. Each subject equilibrated his or her lungs with the appropriate gas mixture prior to testing: PETCO2 and FIO2 wer

Factors influencing acute tympanic temperature changes during cold water exposure.

Exposure to ice water, despite its growing popularity and documented health benefits, is limited by the risk of distressing physiological reactions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between individual, environmental factors and acute tympanic temperature changes during cold exposure. A total of 90 individuals either practicing cold water immersion (CWI) or winter swimming (WS) were enrolled in the study. They were divided into 4 subgroups according to the distance swum (200 m or 450 m) and immersion time (5 or 9 min). The tympanic temperature of all participants was meas

Water temperature during the cold pressor test: A scoping review.

The cold pressor test (CPT) is a commonly used method to induce pain and stress in experimental settings. Previous research has found that the temperature of the water used in the test significantly affects outcome measures such as pain tolerance. Variations in CPT protocols, specifically regarding temperature, have been criticized. Hence, our objective is to investigate water temperature and associated methodological factors through a scoping review of the CPT in adults. Among 331 included trials, the most commonly reported temperature was 1°C (33.8°F). Reporting of the water temperature was

Impact of cold temperature on Euro 6 passenger car emissions.

Hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NH3, N2O, CO2 and particulate matter emissions affect air quality, global warming and human health. Transport sector is an important source of these pollutants and high pollution episodes are often experienced during the cold season. However, EU vehicle emissions regulation at cold ambient temperature only addresses hydrocarbons and CO vehicular emissions. For that reason, we have studied the impact that cold ambient temperatures have on Euro 6 diesel and spark ignition (including: gasoline, ethanol flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles) vehicle emissions using the World-harmoni

Oral environment temperature changes induced by cold/hot liquid intake.

The use of NiTi shape memory alloys, introduced into orthodontics because of their ability to develop light continuous forces that prove more effective than heavy intermittent forces in the teeth movement, requires the mastering of the functional properties of NiTi wires. More specifically, the recovery force acting on the teeth is a sensitive function of temperature: knowledge of oral temperature modifications is therefore required to understand the stress state modification felt during orthodontic therapy. The temperature modifications induced by cold or hot drink intake in the oral cavity w

Temporal evolution of threshold temperatures for extremely cold days in Spain.

In contrast to research on heat waves, there are no studies in recent years that analyze the temporal evolution of threshold temperatures (Tthreshold) for extremely cold days (ECD). It is unknown whether threshold temperatures have increased more quickly than the minimum daily temperature (Tmin) in recent years. The objective of this study was to analyze the temporal evolution of the minimum daily temperature (Tmin) in a group of Spanish provinces and compare it with the evolution of threshold temperatures. An ecological, retrospective time series study was carried out using daily observations
