Divergent thinking in groups during cold-water immersion is impaired by cold stress not the cold shock response.

INTRODUCTION: A primary hazard of working in cold maritime environments is the potential for a substantial man overboard situation in freezing waters. Sudden cold-water immersion (CWI) triggers the cold shock response (CSR), which consists of cardiorespiratory responses that increase the chance of drowning. If cold shock response severity can be mitigated, life-saving actions must be taken within the first 10 min, as after this time frame drowning occurs due to cold incapacitation. To date, research shows that executive functioning is generally impaired by intense, acute stress, which implies

Cold shock response in healthy children: reassessment and first comparison between cold and warm water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Swimming and diving are popular recreational activities and essential skills to prevent death from drowning. While most drownings occur in cold water, cold shock response is discussed as a major cause of drowning. Until now, the data on the physiology of drowning and cold shock response in children are scarce, while drowning remains a significant concern in this population. This study was conducted to investigate the cold shock response in healthy children and compare cold and warm water immersion. METHODS: Participants were first immersed up to the neck in warm water (34 °C, cl

Habituation of the cold shock response: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cold water immersion (CWI) evokes the life-threatening reflex cold shock response (CSR), inducing hyperventilation, increasing cardiac arrhythmias, and increasing drowning risk by impairing safety behaviour. Repeated CWI induces CSR habituation (i.e., diminishing response with same stimulus magnitude) after ∼4 immersions, with variation between studies. We quantified the magnitude and coefficient of variation (CoV) in the CSR in a systematic review and meta-analysis with search terms entered to Medline, SportDiscus, PsychINFO, Pubmed, and Cochrane Central Register. Random effects meta-analyses

Involvement of the sieve element cytoskeleton in electrical responses to cold shocks.

This study dealt with the visualization of the sieve element (SE) cytoskeleton and its involvement in electrical responses to local cold shocks, exemplifying the role of the cytoskeleton in Ca(2+)-triggered signal cascades in SEs. High-affinity fluorescent phalloidin as well as immunocytochemistry using anti-actin antibodies demonstrated a fully developed parietal actin meshwork in SEs. The involvement of the cytoskeleton in electrical responses and forisome conformation changes as indicators of Ca(2+) influx was investigated by the application of cold shocks in the presence of diverse actin d

Acute Anxiety Predicts Components of the Cold Shock Response on Cold Water Immersion: Toward an Integrated Psychophysiological Model of Acute Cold Water Survival.

Introduction: Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death. In cold-water, sudden skin cooling triggers the life-threatening cold shock response (CSR). The CSR comprises tachycardia, peripheral vasoconstriction, hypertension, inspiratory gasp, and hyperventilation with the hyperventilatory component inducing hypocapnia and increasing risk of aspirating water to the lungs. Some CSR components can be reduced by habituation (i.e., reduced response to stimulus of same magnitude) induced by 3-5 short cold-water immersions (CWI). However, high levels of acute anxiety, a plausible emotion on CWI:

A coma pattern-based autofocusing method resolves bacterial cold shock response at single-cell level.

Imaging-based single-cell physiological profiling holds great potential for uncovering fundamental bacterial cold shock response (CSR) mechanisms, but its application is impeded by severe focus drift during rapid temperature downshifts required for CSR induction. Here, we introduce LUNA (Locking Under Nanoscale Accuracy), an innovative autofocusing method that leverages the coma pattern of detection light to characterize focus drift. LUNA improves the focusing precision down to 3 nm and extends the focusing range to at least 40 times the objective depth of focus. These advancements enable us t

Studies on the mechanism of shock. The effect of cocaine and theophylline on the temperature response to injury in the cold-acclimated rat.

The effects of cocaine and theophylline on the changes in core temperature, O2 consumption and the rate of heat loss from the tail were studied in 20° and 3° acclimated rats during and after a 4-hr. period of bilateral hindlimb ischaemia at an environmental temperature of 20°. Cocaine (7 mg. base per kg. body wt. intravenously) had no effect on injured 20° acclimated rats but increased the core temperature in both injured and uninjured 3° acclimated ones. The changes in O2 consumption were unaffected and heat loss from the tail decreased. Cocaine acted mainly by increasing peripheral vasoconst

Mild and deep hypothermia differentially affect cerebral neuroinflammatory and cold shock response following cardiopulmonary bypass in rat.

INTRODUCTION: Targeted temperature management (TTM) is considered to be a neuroprotective strategy during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) assisted procedures, possibly through the activation of cold shock proteins. We therefore investigated the effects of mild compared with deep hypothermia on the neuroinflammatory response and cold shock protein expression after CPB in rats. METHODS: Wistar rats were subjected to 1 hr of mild (33 °C) or deep (18 °C) hypothermia during CPB or sham procedure. PET scan analyses using TSPO ligand [11C]PBR28 were performed on day 1 (short-term) or day 3 and 7 post-p

Mechanisms of drowning in children: influence of cold shock response on repolarization patterns and arrhythmia burden in healthy children.

INTRODUCTION: While drowning plays a particularly important role in children, the data on the physiology of drowning in this population are scarce. Both the cold shock response and the development of arrhythmias within the context of an autonomic conflict may be of particular significance during drowning. The cold shock response has now been outlined by our working group, while the effect of cold water on cardiac repolarization remains unclear. This study aims to provide a more detailed examination of the effects of cold shock response in healthy children, focusing on changes in repolarization

Cold Shock Proteins Promote Nisin Tolerance in Listeria monocytogenes Through Modulation of Cell Envelope Modification Responses.

Listeria monocytogenes continues to be a food safety challenge owing to its stress tolerance and virulence traits. Several listeriosis outbreaks have been linked to the consumption of contaminated ready-to-eat food products. Numerous interventions, including nisin application, are presently employed to mitigate against L. monocytogenes risk in food products. In response, L. monocytogenes deploys several defense mechanisms, reducing nisin efficacy, that are not yet fully understood. Cold shock proteins (Csps) are small, highly conserved nucleic acid-binding proteins involved in several gene reg

The Expression of the Cold Shock Protein RNA Binding Motif Protein 3 is Transcriptionally Responsive to Organ Temperature in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Mild hypothermia, i.e. maintenance of organ temperature by up to 8°C lower than body temperature, is a critical strategy for exerting some functions of the cells and organs normally, and is an useful therapy for recovering properly from some diseases, including myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, brain injury, and ischemic stroke. Nevertheless, there were no focusses so far on organ temperature and potential responses of gene expression to organ temperature in organs of homeothermic animals that survive under normal conditions. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess organ

Integrated multitissue analysis reveals distinct oxidative stress responses during recovery from cold shock in the Amazonian fish Colossoma macropomum.

Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a tropical fish widely cultivated in South America. The increasing demand for this species has heightened interest in its cultivation in subtropical regions with greater thermal variability, where cold shock may induce oxidative stress. This study evaluated the effects of cold shock and subsequent recovery on antioxidant enzyme activity, which included superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and oxidative damage biomarkers (lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl) in

A Prospective Clinical Trial Measuring the Effects of Cardiopulmonary Bypass Under Mild Hypothermia on the Inflammatory Response and Regulation of Cold-Shock Protein RNA-Binding Motif 3.

Therapeutic hypothermia during cardiac surgery has been widely used for neuroprotection and to attenuate the systemic inflammatory response due to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Experimental data suggest that cold-shock protein RNA-binding motif 3 (RBM3), which is induced in response to hypothermia, plays a key role in hypothermia-induced organ protection. To date, investigation on RBM3 has been performed exclusively in vitro or in animal models, and the detection and regulation of RBM3 in human blood has not been investigated until now. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of RBM

A Dose-Response Study on Human FGF21 to Inhibit Necrosis, Spectrin Breakdown, and to Increase Intracellular Cold Shock Proteins in Cultured Cortical Neurons Subjected to Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation Injury.

The cold-stress hormone fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) induces a broad spectrum of neuroprotective effects, including a blunting effect on α-II-spectrin breakdown product 145 (SBDP145) levels in models of hypoxia-ischemia (HI). Here, we studied the impact of FGF21 dosing on cell survival and on SBDP145 levels in normothermic male/female cortical neurons in an oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) injury model of necrosis. We also explored the impact of FGF21 dosing on cold-shock proteins RNA-binding motif 3 (RBM3) and cold-induced RNA-binding protein (CIRBP) in the OGD injury model. FGF21 conc

RBM3 is an outstanding cold shock protein with multiple physiological functions beyond hypothermia.

RNA-binding motif protein 3 (RBM3), an outstanding cold shock protein, is rapidly upregulated to ensure homeostasis and survival in a cold environment, which is an important physiological mechanism in response to cold stress. Meanwhile, RBM3 has multiple physiological functions and participates in the regulation of various cellular physiological processes, such as antiapoptosis, circadian rhythm, cell cycle, reproduction, and tumogenesis. The structure, conservation, and tissue distribution of RBM3 in human are demonstrated in this review. Herein, the multiple physiological functions of RBM3 w

Superhygroscopic Multilayer Microfibrous Membrane for Cold Stress Management.

In subzero environments, moisture from exhaled breath and perspiration readily condenses and freezes inside protective gear, accelerating heat loss and triggering severe cold stress. To address this issue, this study developed a sandwich-structured microfibrous membrane that enabled rapid moisture capture, condensation/freezing inhibition, real-time thermal compensation, and solar-driven regeneration. Even at -21 °C, the membrane can still achieve a high water uptake of 1.41 g g-1 at 90% RH, while storing the absorbed water in a nonfrozen state and releasing appreciable absorption heat to crea

Transcriptomic responses of red palm weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) larvae to low-temperature exposure.

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), is one of the most destructive palm pests worldwide. Despite its tropical origin, this species tolerates moderately low temperatures and has an expansion potential that may be enhanced by global warming. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying cold stress remain poorly understood. This study provides a transcriptomic analysis of its larval response to cold stress. Using RNA-Seq on larvae exposed for 7 d to a sublethal low (5 °C) or control (23 °C) temperature, we identified 701 differentially expressed unigenes (580 protein-coding

Crosstalk between Light- and Temperature-Mediated Processes under Cold and Heat Stress Conditions in Plants.

Extreme temperatures are among the most important stressors limiting plant growth and development. Results indicate that light substantially influences the acclimation processes to both low and high temperatures, and it may affect the level of stress injury. The interaction between light and temperature in the regulation of stress acclimation mechanisms is complex, and both light intensity and spectral composition play an important role. Higher light intensities may lead to overexcitation of the photosynthetic electron transport chain; while different wavelengths may act through different phot

Unraveling the intricacies of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein: A comprehensive review.

Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is a versatile RNA-binding protein, pivotal in modulating cellular responses to diverse stress stimuli including cold shock, ultraviolet radiation, hypoxia, and infections, with a principal emphasis on cold stress. The temperature range of 32-34 °C is most suitable for CIRP expression. The human CIRP is an 18-21 kDa polypeptide containing 172 amino acids coded by a gene located on chromosome 19p13.3. CIRP has an RNA-recognition motif (RRM) and an arginine-rich motif (RGG), both of which have roles in coordinating numerous cellular activities. CIRP itse
