Injuries from Coleoptera.

The effects of Coleoptera (beetles) on humans in the Australian region are surveyed. Ill-effects range from the immediate trauma of a bite, possibly with minor effects from the beetle's salivary secretions, to the effects of the vesicating beetles of the families Meloidae, Oedemeridae and Staphylinidae, and also the acute corneal erosion that is attributed to the small beetle Orthoperus sp. (family Corylophidae) in southeastern Australia. Reference also is made to other effects that are known as a result of beetle metabolites or structures, such as "carpet beetle dermatitis" from the irritatin

Structure of the Brain of the Smallest Coleoptera.

The structure of the brain of the smallest coleopteran, Scydosella musawasensis Hall, 1999, is described for the first time. As in other extremely small beetles, the brain of S. musawasensis displays signs of miniaturization: displacement to the thorax, compactization, and a small number and size of the neurons. The body size of the studied smallest beetle is similar to that of the minute hymenopteran Megaphragma, which has a nearly anucleate nervous system. However, the structure of the brain of the studied smallest beetle is similar to that of large representatives of the order and is charac

The evolution of asymmetric genitalia in Coleoptera.

The evolution of asymmetry in male genitalia is a pervasive and recurrent phenomenon across almost the entire animal kingdom. Although in some taxa the asymmetry may be a response to the evolution of one-sided, male-above copulation from a more ancestral female-above condition, in other taxa, such as Mammalia and Coleoptera, this explanation appears insufficient. We carried out an informal assessment of genital asymmetry across the Coleoptera and found that male genital asymmetry is present in 43% of all beetle families, and at all within-family taxonomic levels. In the most diverse group, Cuc

Cascading biological consequences of acute heat shock in Trogoderma granarium (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Coleoptera: Silvanidae).

Acute heat exposure can suppress stored-product insects through delayed survivor-level impairment that is not captured by mortality alone. This study evaluated the biological consequences of high temperature shocks to Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae). Adults, larvae, eggs, and developmental cohorts were exposed to factorial combinations of 40, 42, 44, 46, and 48 °C and 5, 15, 30, and 45 min, with untreated controls maintained under standard rearing conditions (27 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH, and a 12:12 h light:dark photop

Cerambycid Pheromones Attract Predators Temnoscheila virescens (Coleoptera: Trogossitidae), Chariessa pilosa (Coleoptera: Cleridae), and Apiomerus crassipes (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

In 2011-2013, we determined the interactive effects of the cerambycid pheromones racemic syn-2,3-hexanediol, racemic 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, and racemic 3-hydroxyoctan-2-one on trap catches of predators associated with bark and woodboring beetles in north Georgia and South Carolina. Temnoscheila virescens (F.) (Coleoptera: Trogossitidae) was attracted to traps baited with 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one; ethanol enhanced attraction. Traps baited with syn-2,3-hexanediol attracted Chariessa pilosa (Forster) (Coleoptera: Cleridae); attraction was interrupted by 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one. An assassin bug Apiomerus

Assessing organic chemical management strategies for Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Prostephanus truncatus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) at food facilities.

There is an increasing demand for organically certified practices throughout the postharvest supply chain. Yet, evaluating mortality and sublethal effects from organic chemical control options have received less attention. Thus, the aims of this study were to evaluate the direct mortality and changes in mobility of Prostephanus truncatus and Sitophilus zeamais when using (i) fresh residues or (ii) 7-mo-aged residues on maize from a suite of organically approved grain protectants (3 formulations of 5% pyrethrins, or 8.66% spinosad) compared to a conventional insecticide (4.75% deltamethrin) and

Effects of sulfur dioxide fumigation on mortality of confused flour beetle (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and rice weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) fumigation was studied in laboratory to determine its potential as an alternative treatment for postharvest control of stored product insects, confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), and rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Three-hour fumigations with 0.1%-2.0% SO2 were conducted against eggs, immature stages, and adults of the 2 insects at 20 °C. Effective control of both insects was achieved. However, there were considerable variations between the 2 insects and among different life stages. Confus

An updated phylogenomic tree of Coleoptera (beetles).

Resolving deep phylogenetic relationships within Coleoptera remains challenging despite recent advances in phylogenomics. Here, we reconstruct relationships among beetle lineages to the subfamily level and evaluate how locus filtering, substitution models, and matrix completeness affect the recovered topology. We assembled an updated phylogenomic dataset integrating available genome assemblies, reprocessed short-read data, and newly generated genomes. The dataset comprises 263 beetle species representing 104 families and 210 subfamilies, together with 13 outgroups, based on 2,280 orthologous l

Efficiency Enhancement Technology of Dastarcus helophoroides (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) for Controlling Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae): Drilling Optimization and Biological Collaboration.

Dastarcus helophoroides Fairmaire, a parasitic natural enemy widely used in the biological control of Monochamus alternatus Hope, possesses strong abilities to search for hosts and prey. To enhance the biological control efficacy of D. helophoroides against M. alternatus, this study systematically evaluated the effectiveness of enhancing control through methods such as drilling holes in lure logs and introducing D. helophoroides carrying Pyemotes zhonghuajia or Beauveria bassiana under controlled indoor conditions. The results showed that: (1) Releasing D. helophoroides eggs (after 30 days) an

Introduction to Scydmaeninae (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae): morphology of adults.

Exo- and endoskeletal structures of Scydmaeninae are illustrated and described based on exemplary 351 species representing 116 genera and all tribes. Over 1700 illustrations show an unparallel morphological diversity of ant-like stone beetles, and introduce this group to coleopterists, setting standards for morphological descriptions. The morphological terminology is discussed and selected terms are defined or clarified, to ensure unambiguous understanding of terms used by various authors in a different sense. Several selected problems are discussed in detail, as the cephalic structures; a pos

Discovery of Aspidytidae, a new family of aquatic Coleoptera.

The six extant aquatic families of Hydradephaga (Coleoptera) known so far represent a diverse group of beetles morphologically highly modified for life in the water. We report the discovery of a new genus with two species from South Africa and China, which differ greatly from all extant families, but resemble the Jurassic-Cretaceous dagger Liadytidae (the dagger symbol indicates that the taxa are known only as fossils). Based on a combined phylogenetic analysis of molecular and morphological data we erect a new family, Aspidytidae, which is the sister group of Dytiscidae plus Hygrobiidae. We p

Redescription of Scydmaenus excaviceps Lhoste (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Scydmaeninae).

Scydmaenus (Cholerus) excaviceps, occurring in southern India and Sri Lanka, was described twice by Jean Lhoste, in 1937 and 1938, based on the same holotype, thus creating a synonymous homonym. In his first description, Lhoste erroneously illustrated the aedeagus of Scydmaenus foveocephalus as that of S. excaviceps. Later, Herbert Franz redescribed the Sri Lankan species S. femoralis Nietner, 1856, but unfortunately this was based on misidentified non-type specimens that in fact belong to S. excaviceps. This error led Franz to place S. excaviceps as a junior synonym of S. femoralis. Recently

How Far Can Rhynchophorus palmarum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Fly?

The palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), was first recorded in San Diego County, CA in 2011 and breeding populations were recovered from infested Canary Islands date palms, Phoenix canariensis, in San Ysidro, San Diego County, in 2015. This palm pest presents a significant threat to California's edible date industry as Phoenix dactylifera is a recorded host for this weevil. The flight capabilities of R. palmarum are unknown which limits understanding of rates of natural dispersal. In response to this knowledge deficit, 24-h flight mill trials were conducted with field-collected male and f

Bruchid (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) ovicidal phenylbutanoid from Zingiber purpureum.

The larvicidal activity of the dichloromethane extract of Zingiber purpureum Roscoe (Zingiberaceae) rhizome against the second instar of Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is shown to be due to 4-(3',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)buta-1,3-diene. The diene also showed ovicidal activity against the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Most of the eggs laid by bruchids on treated cowpea seeds were transparent, and very few of them contained developing embryos. The few larvae produced from these embryos were unable to penetrate the seed coat and enter the seed. Similar effects

The complete mitogenome of Dytiscus marginalis czerskii (Dytiscidae, Coleoptera).

Dytiscus marginalis czerskii (Zaitzev, 1953), a rare great diving beetle species, is found in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) of South Korea. We present the first complete mitogenome of D. marginalis czerskii, which is 18,385 bp in length and comprises 37 genes: 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. The overall base composition is A (42.4%), C (11.7%), T (37.6%), and G (8.3%), with a high AT content of 80%. This mitogenome provides valuable data for understanding the phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history within the Dytiscidae family.

The thoracic anatomy of Pselaphus heisei (Pselaphinae, Staphylinidae, Coleoptera).

We document external and internal thoracic structures of the free-living pselaphine beetle Pselaphus heisei (Pselaphitae) using a set of traditional and modern techniques. Like in the specialized myrmecophile Claviger testaceus (Clavigeritae), the skeletal elements of the pro- and pterothorax are highly compact, with largely reduced inter- and intrasegmental sutures. Features previously listed as synapomorphies of staphylinid subgroups, to which Pselaphinae belong, are confirmed for P. heisei. The only previously proposed thoracic synapomorphy of Pselaphinae, the mesoventral foveae, is likely

Developmental cost of leg-regenerated Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

As larval cannibalism is common under intensive rearing conditions, leg regeneration can help ladybugs adapt to the competitive environment, but whether the leg regeneration leads to side effects on development remains unclear. To analyze the potentially developmental cost of leg regeneration, the developmental period and weight of leg-regenerated Coccinella septempunctata were studied in the laboratory. The results showed that, when the time intervals between the emergency of 4th-instar larva and leg amputation increased, the developmental period of leg-regenerated 4th-instar larvae was gradu

Zoysiagrass genotype responses to Sphenophorus venatus vestitus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

The hunting billbug, Sphenophorus venatus vestitus Chittenden, is a pest that damages stems, rhizomes, and roots of zoysiagrass through a combination of adult and larval feeding. Management of this pest is difficult because it has multiple, overlapping generations in the southern United States, and symptoms of infestations are often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated as drought stress or disease. Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse where 18 zoysiagrass cultivars were potted and infested with S. v. vestitus adults to examine the response of zoysiagrass genotypes to S. v. vestitus f
