The mechanoreceptors in the collateral ligaments of the knee joint in rat hindlimbs were studied. In group II (n=10) the femoral and obturator nerves were sectioned. In both groups III and V (n=20) the sciatic nerve was sectioned. In group V (n=10) the sectioned sciatic nerve was sutured 4 weeks after sectioning. In group IV (n=10) all three nerves were sectioned. Group I (n=10) served as control. After 4 months all animals were killed. The ligaments of the knee joint were preserved and stained with gold chloride, paraffin-embedded and cut in sagittal serial sections. The results showed that 4

PURPOSE: To study and clarify the anatomy of the proper collateral ligaments and accessory collateral ligaments of the proximal interphalangeal joint.
METHODS: The collateral ligaments of 8 proximal interphalangeal joints were dissected under an operating microscope to gain an appreciation of their fiber direction and the anatomy of their origin and insertion. Two undissected joints were studied histologically.
RESULTS: The proper collateral ligament was found to arise widely from dorsal and proximal to and from the fovea on the side of the head of the proximal phalanx and insert for some di

Injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpal phalangeal joint of the thumb can usually be diagnosed on the basis of a combination of history, radiographic examination, and clinical stress testing of the joint when appropriate. Occasionally, when the patient is seen late and the diagnosis is doubtful, stress evaluation may be ill-advised because a nondisplaced ligament may be displaced in the process. We had recent experience with three patients in whom the use of magnetic resonance imaging was helpful in diagnosing a displaced ulnar collateral ligament in two cases, and an intrali

Thumb metacarpophalangeal ulnar and radial collateral ligament injuries occur frequently in the competitive athlete. Collateral ligament integrity is essential to joint stability, pinch strength, and pain-free motion. Acute rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament is due to a sudden radial deviation force on the abducted thumb and is referred to as skier's thumb. An ulnar-directed force causes injury to the radial collateral ligament. The degree of joint instability on clinical examination allows classification of these injuries and guides management. Surgical repair of acute, complete tears r

Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of the overhead athlete's elbow has led the medical community to understand that the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow is more commonly injured than originally thought. Injury can result in secondary symptoms and problems in other regions of the elbow. Sports requiring an overhead motion, such as throwing a ball, hitting a ball overhead, or serving a tennis ball, imparts a valgus stress on the elbow that is resisted by the UCL. Throwing sidearm or hitting a forehand in tennis, squash, or racquetball may also impart a valgus stress to th

Injuries of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee are easily diagnosed on clinical grounds. These lesions are generally treated conservatively. Radiological examinations are generally unhelpful. However, injuries of the MCL may be associated with those of many other ligaments of the knee in the case of complex strain of the knee so that the clinical diagnosis may be challenging; in some cases, surgical repair of associated lesions is indicated. In these cases of multiple ligamentous injuries, a radiological study of ligamentous abnormalities may be of interest. The anatomical backgr

OBJECTIVE: To describe the arthroscopically accessible anatomy of the tarsal collateral ligaments in the horse.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study.
ANIMALS: Cadaveric equine hind limbs (n = 24) obtained from horses without tarsal disease.
METHODS: Two pairs of tarsal joints were used to obtain silicone models of the tarsocrural joint and dissect the tarsal collateral ligaments (CLs). Ten pairs of tarsocrural joints had arthroscopic exploration and the accessible parts of the tarsal CLs were marked with an arthroscopic hook knife. Subsequently, the limbs were dissected and the marked positions

In 91 patients evaluated between 1982 and 1985, tibial collateral ligament bursitis was diagnosed. This entity has not been described since the work of Brantigan and Voshell in 1943. The diagnosis was based on the findings of tenderness over the tibial collateral ligament at the joint line, without a history of mechanical symptoms. With a nonsurgical program, 62% of the patients improved and subsequently required no further treatment. Fifteen percent did not improve; of this group, one-third had a negative arthrogram or arthroscopy. Another 23% did not improve and ultimately underwent an arthr

Duplicate thumb is a common congenital difference with complex management. Surgical treatment includes reconstruction of the collateral ligaments to optimise future function and cosmesis. We present the use of the "U-ligament" to further refine collateral ligament reconstruction. We have found it to be a simple and reliable technique.

BACKGROUND: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) plays a vital role in maintaining the stability of the elbow joint during overhead throwing activities. Stress to the UCL may lead to high-grade or full-thickness tears that require reconstruction or repair and lengthy rehabilitation in athletes. Workup of these injuries can sometimes reveal ossification in the ligament. It is unknown if ossification in the UCL affects postoperative outcomes.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether different preoperative ossification conditions of the UCL might influence various

BACKGROUND: Although the collateral and accessory collateral ligaments of the metacarpophalangeal joint contribute to the stability of this joint, the functional role of the various portions of these ligaments during flexion is unclear. We investigated changes in the three-dimensional shape and length of the collateral and accessory collateral ligaments during flexion to determine how each portion stabilized the metacarpophalangeal joint.
METHODS: Twelve fingers from three embalmed cadavers were examined. The origin and the insertion point of the dorsal, middle, and volar portions of the radi

INTRODUCTION: Applying proper tension to collateral ligaments during total knee arthroplasty surgery is fundamental to achieve optimal implant performance: low tension could lead to joint instability, over-tensioning leads to pain and stiffness. A "functional stability" must be defined and achieved during surgery to guarantee optimal results. In this study, an experimental cadaveric activity was performed to measure the minimum tension required to achieve knee functional stability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten knee specimens were investigated; femur and tibia were fixed in specifically designed

Collateral ligament injuries of the proximal interphalangeal joint are common. A significant number of these injuries result in complete rupture of the ligament. The forces that damage the ligaments are abduction and adduction stresses. Previous studies have investigated laxity, angulation, and patterns of failure, but detailed biomechanical rupture studies are scant. Sixty-eight proximal interphalangeal joints from fresh human cadaver fingers (average age, 67 years) were stressed at velocities of 1 mm/sec, 4 mm/sec, and 10 mm/sec. Sectioning studies were also done. Four distinct rupture patte

In order to determine whether degenerative changes in knee ligaments precede or follow their rupture, the knee joints of 55 adult male broiler breeding fowls have been studied. All birds were between 60 and 62 weeks old when examined. Dissections at autopsy revealed whether collateral or cruciate ligaments were deranged, but only intact ligaments were processed for histo-pathological examination. Degenerative lesions were observed in intact ligaments at sites corresponding to regions where rupture normally occurs. These sites differ for medial collateral and cruciate ligaments. There was an in

BACKGROUND: Although anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears have received the most attention, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is thought to be the most commonly injured knee ligament overall. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and posterior collateral ligament (PCL) are less frequently compromised but can be involved in severe multiligament injuries. The paucity of information on the native properties of these ligaments in the pediatric population hinders the overall optimization of treatment for these injuries.
PURPOSE: To characterize the mechanical and microstructural properties of

Cats show a higher capability to supinate their forearms than dogs. This suggests a special arrangement of the collateral ligaments of the feline elbow joint. Therefore, the course of the ligaments was examined in 13 adult cats. The size of the ligaments was measured, and effects of passive joint movements were studied. Ligaments of five additional cats were examined histologically. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) had a superficial and deep part, both originating from the humerus. The free humeral portion of the LCL was short and contained fibrous cartilage. Fibre bundles of the deep par

BACKGROUND: Lateral ulnar collateral ligament injury following unstable elbow dislocation can induce posterolateral rotatory instability that requires surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of arthroscopic repair of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) complex in an unstable elbow joint.
METHODS: The study group consisted of 13 patients who experienced posterolateral rotatory instability after an unstable elbow dislocation with an injury to the lateral ulnar collateral ligament. The diagnosis was confirmed with computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (
